Apologies if this is already a thread…
Anyone seen the amendment relating to sex offenders changing aspects of their identity?

Thoughts?

🤣 Anyone else laughing their socks off at the ambitiously usernamed one’s effort to describe what he thinks is an average Mumsnetter and then smear her?

Every time I read it I start laughing all over again.

There are many ways to ensure sex offenders aren't able to alter their personal details in a wily nily fashion. Sitting back and accepting that your right to protest be curtailed in the hope that the details of the bill gets one over on a group you ain't too fond of is in my opinion short sighted to say the least.

The simplest solution could be that anyone wishing to change their name for any reason (including marriage) has to be subjected to a self funded DBS. (there will be usual exemptions based on safety and financial situation to help). We can now ensure some sort of level playing field where the cheques and balances apply to everyone.

After all, we don't want to sustain a situation where Penelope Jackson-Smythe (made up please don'tget offended if this us you) of a small village in the middle of nowhere, who, despite presenting as a person at the centre of the local churches endeavours and all the great community stuff such as country markets and cake sales has a liking for teenage schoolboys.

Of course, I Agree that trans people should be subject to these requirements too because they are just human beings like the rest of society.

Avocadowoman · 06/07/2021 16:05

I think the point is that at the moment a person must provide a 'primary identity document' being birth/adoption cert, passport, driving licence or residence permit.

But apparently, the police do not check with the DVLA or the passport office whether the individual has changed their name.

This seems utterly bizarre, and bordering on the unbelievable, but I have not seen proof that the police do check, and this and other conversations that people have had with DBS suggest that at the moment this is indeed the case.

Clearly, criminals will exploit loopholes. This seems a particularly simple one to close.

It would be silly not to close it for everything, so we will have to wait and see.

A GRC would be needed to change the birth certificate, it would therefore appear sensible to also check whether the indicidual has been issued with a GRC.

If self ID went through, the GRC would be a massive loophole in this system. As it is, it is a small one compared to passport/driving licence changes.

@Imnobody4

Surely the point is that sex offenders should report to the police that they have changed their names. This applies just as much to someone transitioning as anyone else. I don't see how it can be limited to deed poll changes alone. It would be wide open for sex offenders to use the transitioning route as another loophole.
For sure. I think the discussion point here is the (positive) news that further protections will hopefully be brought in to avoid criminals slipping through the net. I hope it doesn't turn into a conversation about how many trans people may or may not be criminals.

The guidance is, as always, not entirely clear.

You don't always need a deed poll to use a different name deedpolloffice.com/change-name/other-ways-to-change-your-name

So someone could use a different name for some purposes without one, then get a GRC

If you’ve been issued a fullGRC, then this will be sufficient evidence of your change of name (and gender, for passport purposes), and you won’t need a deed poll.

snekkes · 06/07/2021 12:17

My understanding is that as part of the GRC application process, a person has to prove they've been using their new name for at least two years, so I don't quite understand "name changes via the GRC route"?

Thelnebriati · 06/07/2021 12:01

Oh ffs.

Ah, Sarah only talks about changes by deed poll, ignoring the elephant in the room

PronounssheRa · 06/07/2021 11:33

Will be interesting to see if the review only looks at deed poll changes, or whether it will also look at name changes via the GRC route.

Rare to get a “win” in Parliament as an opposition backbencher - but I got one tonight when the Minister agreed to review the loophole that allows sex offenders to change their name with seeming impunity t.co/RcxbtnLbWY

Will wait to see the outcome now.

Sittinginthesand · 04/07/2021 09:24

I don’t see how this is good news? It doesn’t say anything about where’s trans sex offenders should be imprisoned. It doesn’t involve consulting any women’s groups. It can easily be reviewed and reach a conclusion that everything’s fine.

LizzieSiddal · 04/07/2021 09:17

Good news. At the moment they need only to slip on a bit of lippy/a twirly dress/change pronouns and Bobs your Uncle (or your Aunt.)

Avocadowoman · 04/07/2021 08:02

At the moment I believe a DBS check does not involve the police asking the passport office if the person has changed their name.

It relies on the employer, who sees the original documents, checking them properly and I think asks for 5 years of address history.

But if someone changes their name on their passport (possibly requires a deed poll, but we know passport office does not require a GRC to change the sex, so……), then changes the name on a driving licence, and then waits a while, and does not declare former names on the DBS check, no one knows.

Seems incredible and I would be glad to be corrected, but there have been other threads where people have corresponded with the DBS and mentioned this.

NiceGerbil · 04/07/2021 03:23

They are talking about the police.

Not prison officers or probation officers.

What situations is this about?

Thelnebriati · 03/07/2021 23:43

It could be that. Or arse covering. Or a lack of joined up thinking.
Its going to be interesting to watch it play out; in the sense of feeling like we've been cursed with 'may you live in interesting times'.

AnyOldPrion · 03/07/2021 18:36

@chickenyhead

Couldn't this be an exercise in simply being seen to do something, but setting it up in advance to be a whitewash?

(Too many years of watching this play out in the civil service work environment)

Very believable, but if that’s the plan, they’re still underestimating how angry women are over the current political situation. The GRA reform consultation was set up with that assumption. It didn’t go to plan because of us.

ArabellaScott · 03/07/2021 14:00

Well, any form of name-change, I suppose?

AnyOldPrion · 03/07/2021 13:55

It doesn’t at any point mention transitioning. Perhaps those women actually haven’t made the link that we would? I’m trying to think of something other than sex that might be said to be “changing aspects of identity” and coming up blank, but they might have something else in mind.

Pretty sure that must be it. I can’t imagine those woman would ever wish to stop men who claim they feel like women from having everything they ask for, regardless of sex-offender status or the potential negative effect on the safety of women and children

PurpleHoodie · 03/07/2021 11:14

Thelnebriati

I can't eyeroll hard enough at this, its what us 'purported feminists' have been saying for years.

There are currently loopholes in safeguarding big enough for convicted sex offenders to stroll through, because these women pushed acceptance without exception and called us bad names.

This. So much.

ArabellaScott · 03/07/2021 09:13

Maybe realisation has dawned at last.

Datun · 03/07/2021 09:10

Surely to God, anyone can see that this is a loophole that is benefiting every sex offender in the country. And now they realise that you don't have to do a damn thing except say some words, in order to become officially transgender, they must see where this has all lead.

No one is going to buy the idea that they didn't understand.

highame · 03/07/2021 09:06

It might be that they've realised they are on the women & Equalities Committee and perhaps it's getting through to them that women actually matter and that there is a lot of pushback. I think though that I'm being too optimistic
