On Twitter, no reference.
If this is true it's a travesty.
I find it very hard to believe.

ah ok!

Hoppinggreen · 31/10/2021 13:03

I mean the statistics around life expectancy

KeflavikAirport · 31/10/2021 12:51

Why is it not true? By definition if you have a media platform you are not socially disenfranchised.

Hoppinggreen · 31/10/2021 12:42

Well even if that were true (it’s not) it doesn’t mean that we should give them anything and everything they ask for

KeflavikAirport · 31/10/2021 12:35

It seems to me that the active TRAs I see having their voices heard online and in the media are actually rather high in social capital.

This article explains some of this as it relates to the UK

NoYOUbekind · 30/10/2021 12:04

@KeflavikAirport it's based on a Swedish survey from 2016.

Reasons are varied, but autistic people with LDs have a shockingly low life expectancy. Suicide rates for autistic men in particular are a lot higher than general population. Non-verbal autistic people have huge difficulties accessing treatment. Diabetes is much higher. And autism is often a co-morbidity with other life limiting illnesses - obvs in that case it's not the autism per se that would cause the early death.

Voice0fReason · 30/10/2021 12:03

This thread has all of the answers that people need.
There are explanations and links to show where these figures came from and how they absolutely do not mean that being a transwoman means you are likely to die in your 30s. It's nonsense.

KeflavikAirport · 30/10/2021 12:00

OK this suggests 39.5 years for people with severe autism and associated comorbidities: www.thinkingautism.org.uk/addressing-poor-health-high-death-rates-in-autism/

KeflavikAirport · 30/10/2021 11:57

I'd need to see some really good sources to believe that. Are we talking UK? Worldwide?

tigerinyourtank · 30/10/2021 11:37

Not read the whole thread but I did autism training recently that said the average life expectancy of someone with autism was around 35.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/10/2021 10:31

Really interesting, FlyingOink, thank you.

Second link is in Portuguese.

NecessaryScene · 29/10/2021 07:44

Again, to reiterate, the "35" number is the average age of trans murder victims (somewhere).

Which is the same as the average age of all murder victims, pretty much everywhere.

Or, indeed, the average age of anyone...

Hmmm but dont most men transition in their 40s and 50s? Hows that work then? do they also age transition and actually die in their 70s and 80s like most of us?
KeflavikAirport · 29/10/2021 06:43

Life expectancy across the board in Liberia was 42 not so long ago.

EishetChayil · 28/10/2021 08:52

This might be the case in the favelas of Brazil, but every transperson I see is a middle-aged trans-identifying male.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 28/10/2021 08:26

Well, I have just been educated re. the 35 year life expectancy fact (for another South American country). When I said I knew where the number came from, they retorted with - 'that's old, a new study shows the same'. I asked for a link, which I read and, as expected, did not mention life expectancy at all.

The unwillingness of the members of these closed communities to go beyond their thought reform restrictions and consider matters properly and read around is alarming. The refusal to participate in discussion but to restrict themselves to delivering packages of pre-interpreted thought and phrases is essential to their continuing membership of that community and it makes it very difficult to influence them or engage them.

Unfortunately, because of the captured nature of the policy making, the consequences of this misinformation do not have a natural limit to their scope but affect people outside their communities and the harms are substantial.

Lovelyricepudding · 28/10/2021 07:08

This figure is the average age of murder victims. Not life expectancy.

I did a bit of reading and it seems that several 'studies' in Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Mexico have been come up with this exact same number. Does anyone know if they are all in fact misquoting the Brazilian numbers?

@TheHeathenOfSuburbia, I too asked similar questions - are these suicides? homocides? are there other comorbidities? I was told the 'cause of death was not relevant, what's important is that they are a vulnerable population'.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 02/07/2021 10:15

@MishyJDI
I'm a medical researcher with an interest in politics.

When I see a statistic like that, my reaction is to think, shit, that's terrible!
Is it true across the board? What's causing the deaths?
Let's go to the source, look at the data, and see what factors are impacting on that and what action we could take to change them.

Are you saying my reaction should be to say, 'tsk, bloody transphobes' and move on? I'm not sure how that helps?

Tibtom · 02/07/2021 00:42

@mumwon

Life expectancy for transwomen?
We don't have that statistic
Helleofabore · 01/07/2021 23:21

Wouldn’t it be grand to have some accurate statistics for that very purpose…

mumwon · 01/07/2021 22:02

Life expectancy for transwomen?

Tibtom · 01/07/2021 16:34

My point about trans women in Asia was are they are included in the stats?

What stats? The average age at which transwomen are murdered in Latin America (which is also, oddly, higher than their reported average life expectancy there)?
