There doesn’t seem to be a lot of consistency in the IOC rules

Laurel Hubbard Transwoman allowed to compete as a female
Quinn Transman allowed to compete as a female

Not sure if Kimi Yokoyama is in the Olympic team but still playing with a woman's yean in the USA.

I presume Quinn is not taking testosterone as being of the female sex if she had the 10 level of testosterone Hubbard is allowed Quinn would be accused of doping.

Sexnotgender · 25/06/2021 15:13

I’ve got absolutely no issue with this person competing on the women’s team. As long as no hormones have been taken then they’re still a biological woman they just dress in a non feminine way really.

PearPickingPorky · 25/06/2021 15:12

@IndecentCakes

I think Quinn is non-binary. Also, trans men would still be unable to compete in sport against born-males, I would assume, they'd be in danger physically.
Non-binary isn't "woman" though, isn't that what they say? Does the literal violence of misgendering only apply when it's transwomen?

Anyway, why would they be unable to compete against men? Either biology is irrelevant and current hormone levels are all that matters, or biology is the primary determinant of advantage.

Can't have it both ways. Is it a women's category, or a "non-manly-men" category?

GrownUpBeans · 25/06/2021 15:10

However, if you don’t identify as being in that sex category, surely it would be triggering and/or distressing to align yourself to a team made up of that category?

Reading the article, it seems Quinn's reasons for being non-binary are more to do with avoiding stereotypes than believing they are not female sex. So fits fine with playing for the woman's team.

Aspiringmatriarch · 25/06/2021 15:05

I'm fine with them competing - unless they've been bulking up on loads of testosterone? From the photos it doesn't look like it. I really don't understand non-binary though, surely it's just not wanting to conform to gender roles which are (optional) bollocks anyway. That's how it comes across from the statement they made, anyway.

Obviously it's inconsistent with Laurel Hubbard being allowed to compete as a woman, and hopefully as a result of that many more people are becoming aware of the importance of biological sex categories.

InvisibleDragon · 25/06/2021 15:04

If Quinn isn't taking testosterone I think that's fine - they can identify how they like, user whatever pronouns they like and still compete in the correct category for their biological sex.

Hubbard competing as a woman based on their gender identity being female is ridiculous though. As the World Rugby consultation found, testosterone suppression in no way removes the strength advantages from having gone through a male puberty. Again, Laurel Hubbard can identify as having a female gender identity and can ask people to use gender-based pronouns. But she should not be competing in the women's sporting category. This is and should remain a category based on biological sex.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 25/06/2021 15:04

Seems if you're non-binary you can play in the team for your biological sex. Quinn seems happy with that. And no unfair advantage.

I’m glad there’s no advantage as presumably no hormones involved. However, if you don’t identify as being in that sex category, surely it would be triggering and/or distressing to align yourself to a team made up of that category?

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 25/06/2021 15:01

Quinn doesn’t identify as a woman so why are they on a women’s team?

Don’t go around asking logical questions like that and expect a sensible answer Wink

GrownUpBeans · 25/06/2021 15:01

I think you should change the title of this post, it's incorrect.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 25/06/2021 15:00

What is Quinn transistioning to? Or is Quinn saying that Quinn is non-binary? Are there hormones involved? I’m guessing not if Quinn is being allowed to play. The hypocricy from the IOC is astounding.

This quote from Quinn is very telling to me. That someone born female should feel this way and wish to identify out of it is unsurprising (although there’s no reason why you couldn’t just live the way you wish and damn the haters):

We live in a world that is so binary and I have been receiving messages ever since I was a young child about how I should act, how I should portray myself and how I should be and anything that deviated from that was essentially wrong.

I wanted to live my authentic self, dress the way I wanted to, present the way I wanted to, and that wasn't always seen as positive, so that was really hard to digest.

Isn't Quinn non-binary?

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 25/06/2021 14:48

So, it’s simple really...
Males are whoever they say they are.
Females are limited by their inescapable biology.

It’s pretty basic misogyny.

PearPickingPorky · 25/06/2021 14:47

TWAW, and TMAW.

Apparently.
