So Mumsnet ignored our request to have something to do with 'feminism' or 'women' in the name of the 'naughty step' subtopic

So we now have

Feminist Chat (which was our space anyway)

Sex and gender debate

If they had to go ahead with this spineless nonsense plan, many of us on the preferred names thread suggested it was essential to include feminism in the naughty step topic. You cannot take the debate on sex/gender away from feminism.

I think my suggestion was:

Feminism: Women's Sex Based Rights

LibFem

So not only are they ignoring us and forging ahead with this crap, they've removed any relationship to feminism and women from the subtopic name.

Absolutely disgusted. This feels so reminiscent of the erasure of the word 'women' in so many contexts. To take the word feminist out of this subtopic- @MNHQ can you explain this? Because it's awful.

I'm not very happy that the trans widows threads have been moved to a section with "debate" in the title.

@WanderinWomb May I ask why you believe that a clearly labelled board name that is not obfuscating the issue nor siding with one side would confuse young feminists? I am a young feminist, in my twenties, and I find the other names suggested either hold unnecessary bias or obfuscate the issue being discussed - e.g. Sex Based Rights.

Also, in regards to the name making the mumsnet feminism more likely to be targeted; I don't know if you know this but the mumsnet feminism board is already quite well known for its general opinion on the sex and gender debate to people who care about these issues. I don't think a rename to separate the topics in house is going to have any further negative effect. Anyone even mildly clued up about issues made popular by the likes of JK Rowling would have a pretty clear understanding of the sex and gender debate and arguments put forward regarding womens' rights.

And also, again, the importance of the topic is subjective. Worrying that people aren't going to randomly stumble across it isn't ever really a reason to misleadingly of purposefully vaguely name something.

MouseyTheVampireSlayer · 21/06/2021 21:13

That doesn't help new users. Both boards should have equal visibility and accessibility.
As I said before, I don't want to watch threads. I want to see an overview.
This is basic, basic it stuff.
A drop down menu is not difficult to achieve. I know someone who can do it in an evening.

This whole decision, and the way its been handled, feel like a kick in the teeth.

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 21/06/2021 21:11

As the URL is women's rights why not just call it 'women's rights'.

I would have thought that having 'sex' in there will not be helpful for searches.

@CriticalCondition

Surely the people who actively use and post on a board should have most say in what it is called, not the people who do not and wish to avoid it.
I mean, you'd have thought so, wouldn't you?
Pumperthepumper · 21/06/2021 21:09

@MouseyTheVampireSlayer

As in active discussion That brings up a whole.load of threads that are totally irrelevant. If I wanted to go on random chats I'd go on active or aibu. I'm talking about actively looking at the feminism board because I'm interested in that. I don't want to wade through other stuff. Honestly, an actual drop down is basic, basic user friendly stuff. It's exactly the sort by thing that should have been done before you make major site changes.
You could make a shortcut to it on your phone?
Pumperthepumper · 21/06/2021 21:08

You could use watching in that case.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 21/06/2021 21:07

So the people who don't like the topics, don't like the board, get to decide not only that it's split but also what it's called?
Yes, totally makes sense that.

No, I meant you can access the boards through ‘active’ - you don’t have to post on them yourself for them to be active. It’s the threads people are on at the time you click on ‘active’.

Unless you hide all of the other topics that's not the same thing at all.

To be frank, I don't want to have to be 'live' on a thread all the time. I find numerous notifications annoying, but are obviously needed to keep up with a thread. Your solution means I have to always be on an active thread and I don't necessarily want that. I want to be able to view the boards and decide what I want to post on. A drop down is needed.

@LoverOfLight

Why would Sex Based Rights be a good indicator of what the topic is about? It may sum up what the topic represents to you but, sex based rights are not exclusive to the sex and gender debate, and the sex and gender debate is not wholly encompassed by sex based rights. It makes no sense.
Well we'd first have to know what the topic was about, and what criteria were for posting in there were, before deciding a name.

What is it that MN want in there?

An awkward name will stop new users finding it.
I would have never learnt a thing about the most important battle for women's rights in our lifetimes if all discussion had been siloed off into "sex-based debate" or "sex and gender debate" , because I like most other women have no interest in debating sex and gender. What I WAS I interested in women's rights.

Perhaps those that contacted Justine had exactly that as the aim, to make it harder for young feminists to find out that there is a war on women going on.

Is very naive to imagine that this place is not targeted by anti woman activists, very naive.

I have to ask why posters who apparently are not interested in posting on this board and wish to hide it are so invested in what it is called. Why is that?
🤔😁

I don't find that a good solution I am afraid. I want to be able to access the areas simply, not do a song and dance about it

OK, fair enough, hope it sorts out for you soon or find a better way of doing it (genuinely)

Yes, I thought those posters would be happy to leave this part of the site alone and yet here they are...

And you say I'M the one being rude?! Confused Grin
I was genuinely trying to help.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 21/06/2021 20:56

What even is gender?
I mean I don't know if I'm allowed to say? A social construct? Is that allowed? 😁

Forgotthebins · 21/06/2021 20:54

JustineI agree with the points by PP that it would have been better to keep the word “feminism” in the title, as it steers the discussion to the political and social issues, and away from the personally targeted. As an example, sometimes someone will start a thread which is essentially just “a trans person did a bad thing”. At which point usually enough people say “what has this got to do with feminism” and the thread fades out. The board being clearly under feminism, and named as such, keeps the main focus on the conflict of rights. This board is about the only place on the internet where people can discuss that. A set of discussions about “sex and gender” is far, far, less useful to women who are helping each other navigate this new discourse that is re-designing our social structures and changing our language. I really think this move will have a negative effect on the quality of threads.

World health organisation (and they're a massively respected influential global org even if a lot of women around the world are very pissed off at them at the moment!

From here www.who.int/westernpacific/health-topics/gender

I've cut a few bits- it's long. The following are all on the same page and shows that the WHO see gender as sex role. Around the world as well, it's really standard to refer to gender when sex is meant- talking about abortion, education, loads of things where they definitely mean the role/ value in society due to sex.

'Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are socially constructed. This includes norms, behaviours and roles associated with being a woman, man, girl or boy, as well as relationships with each other. As a social construct, gender varies from society to society and can change over time.

Gender is hierarchical and produces inequalities that intersect with other social and economic inequalities'
'Gender influences people’s experience of and access to healthcare. The way that health services are organized and provided can either limit or enable a person’s access to healthcare information, support and services, and the outcome of those encounters. Health services should be affordable, accessible and acceptable to all, and they should be provided with quality, equity and dignity.'
'Consequently, women and girls face greater risks of unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, cervical cancer, malnutrition, lower vision, respiratory infections, malnutrition and elder abuse, amongst others. Women and girls also face unacceptably high levels of violence rooted in gender inequality and are at grave risk of harmful practices such as female genital mutilation, and child, early and forced marriage. WHO figures show that about 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.'
