Barracker · 29/05/2021 19:50

Thought it would be handy to keep a running list here of organisations who have done 'budget reviews' or similar and have subsequently decided that Stonewall are 'not value for money'.

EHRC
ACAS
House of Commons
DVLA
Dorset Police
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

Do feel free to update the thread as more join the exodus.

It's only on twitter but it seems to have been picked up by the BBC.

Thanks @Igneococcus

A BBC spokesman justified its position, saying: “We are not a member of Stonewall, we do not take legal advice from Stonewall and we do not subscribe to Stonewall’s campaigning. The charity simply provides advice that we are able to consider.”

The charity simply provides advice that we are able to consider

NOT simply provides advice; It's an unequal relationship where BBC HR and Equalities Diversity Officers spend a huge amount of time filling in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index Forms after rolling out changes across the BBC to get higher up the INDEX. Not CONSIDER BUT COMPLY.

Comment in the Times today about the BBC and Stonewall, share tokens work again yay:

Andrew Doyle video clip discussing the latest bodies leaving SW, SW founders speaking out and what SW are doing now

What’s wrong with Stonewall?

FindTheTruth · 25/08/2021 14:47

@AnyOldPrion

Doesn’t sound like you’re missing anything, Find. The statement makes it clear they’re making a strategic change in an attempt to silence critics, while carrying on with the scheme under the radar. Fits in perfectly with transactivist strategy, and well done to Sex Matters for revealing what they’re trying to do.
Blimey. Well done SexMatters. It's crazy. The “Workplace Equality Index” IS the fucking scheme. So no change then
Datun · 25/08/2021 14:11

Sex Matters: We do not think it is necessary or appropriate for public bodies to engage in a secret scheme in order to comply with the Equality Act 2010. If membership of the Diversity Champions scheme could harm public perceptions of Ofcom’s impartiality, continued membership of a scheme under which it pays Stonewall to give it secret coaching and feedback on its policies and its performance of its public functions will do much worse damage.

Quite.

The means by which a public body upholds the equality act must remain secret???

Who on earth do they think they are kidding!! It's quite unbelievable.

"it says it is remaining in the Workplace Equality Index in which it answers detailed questions about it policies and seeks to achieve Stonewall approval."

🙄what am I missing here? that pretty much is the Stonewall scheme

Essemsee · 25/08/2021 13:16

Although a note of caution ... sex-matters.org/posts/workplace-rights/ofcom-leaves-stonewall/

teawamutu · 25/08/2021 12:44

That's very encouraging.

rogdmum · 25/08/2021 12:29

John McManus has now confirmed that thankfully it is true:

twitter.com/johnmcm1/status/1430488333403181056?s=21

“ NEW: The media regulator @Ofcom has told me that it has left the controversial @stonewalluk Diversity Champions scheme - in part it says, because of the need to remain impartial in regard to some of the most heated debates surrounding Stonewall’s political campaigns.

In a statement @Ofcom said: "As the communications regulator, an important part of our responsibility is to ensure we remain impartial and independent at all times. Our commitment to supporting the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ people is as strong as ever."

Essemsee · 25/08/2021 10:46

I saw this on twitter and am hoping they haven't got confused with Ofsted who have left Stonewall.

RoastChicory · 25/08/2021 10:43

It would be quite a turnaround if this is true.

FindTheTruth · 25/08/2021 10:38

I've been searching Floral, can't find anything atm

FloralBunting · 25/08/2021 10:37

Anyone have any evidence of the Ofcom thing? All I've seen is a random tweet claiming it.

FindTheTruth · 25/08/2021 10:29

If Ofcom have withdrawn that's quite a change from 6 months ago. I wonder if there are political changes about to hit Ofcom leadership.
Ofcom will have the powers to enforce the new Online Harms Bill. And the Chief's statement Dec 2020 was chilling...

@fairplaywomen
It is no surprise the BBC is scared of this topic. Even the chair of @Ofcom says ‘Stonewall are the experts’ when asked about how to achieve balance in the media.

FindTheTruth · 25/08/2021 10:13

@Ofcom has withdrawn from the @stonewalluk Champions Scheme?

I thought the Ofcom chief compared critics of SW to racists?

Dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 15/07/2021 21:17

I've just switched my M&S nominated charity on the strength of that earlier post, from Macmillan to RNLI Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/07/2021 17:48

What that says is "this organisation is a member but we don't really pay any particular attention to them", isn't it?

Tesla73 · 15/07/2021 15:20

The Arts Council have replied to my FOI request and they are still with SW at least until next year

"Our Response:

Arts Council England is a member of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme. This incurs an annual fee, currently set at £2,500.00 + VAT (Total £3,000.00). We have been a member of this programme since 2018, and are continuing to do so for the 2021/2022 financial year. Any renewal of this membership – should Arts Council England decide to continue – will take place in the following financial year (2022/21).

While we are members of this programme, Arts Council England has not consulted with Stonewall in regard to interpretation of the Equality Act and related matters of employment policy in our workplace, nor do we intend to at this time.

Arts Council England does not have any connections to Mermaids or Gendered Intelligence at this time."

Tesla73 · 15/07/2021 10:51

Very disappointing response from macmillan - they are still under the spell of Stonewall:

"Thank you for your email of 16th June expressing concerns about Macmillan’s affiliations with regards to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. First of all, I apologise for the lateness of this response, we’re currently receiving unprecedented volumes of enquiries and this has caused delays getting back to our supporters.

We know that people face health inequalities (especially around cancer care) due to their sex, gender identity and sexual attraction, and we strive to ensure that we are doing everything we can to support everyone living with cancer. Macmillan is a member of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions Programme; which is an important support tool within our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy as it enables us to understand the barriers that LGBTQ+ people face in the workplace and the community. However, we will use the support and advice that is right for our organisation as the programme allows us to do. At present we don’t have any formal relationship with Gendered Intelligence or Mermaids, but we have used Gendered Intelligence previously and don’t rule out the possibility of using these organisations in the future.

Our sole aim at Macmillan is to ensure everyone living with cancer receives the support which is right for them. Stonewall’s advice on legislative practice is in line with The Equality Act 2010, which has always said that individuals do not need to have any medical treatment to be protected under the legislation; Stonewall’s statement can be found here. We also recognise that words like mother and women etc are important to people and we don’t stop people from using them if that’s how they identify.

Stonewall advice gives LGBTQ+ individuals an alternative way to identify which is right for them. We recognise that not everyone identifies with gendered language and by providing gender neutral policies and cancer information, we are allowing everyone to access the information which is appropriate for them. For example, we use gender neutral language in our cervical cancer information so that anyone who is concerned about cervical cancer or has had a diagnosis feels like we are able to provide support to them – moving towards our goal of supporting everyone who is living with cancer.

This is in line with our wider organisational commitment to make our Macmillan more representative of society and accessible to all. We value and record all feedback and use this to help us continuously drive through developments and improvements within our organisation. I hope my email has helped explain why we our continued membership of Stonewall Diversity Champions Programme helps us in supporting the trans community and will ultimately help us guarantee we’re there to help everyone find their best way through from the moment of diagnosis, so they can live life as fully as they can.

I trust you feel you can hold Macmillan Cancer Support and the services we provide for those living with cancer in high regard, if I can be of any further help, please email me on [email protected]"

Tesla73 · 08/07/2021 15:24

National Museum of Wales appear to be out

"I am responding to an email you sent asking about Amgueddfa Cymru's connections with Stonewall.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

We are not currently members of Stonewall and are reviewing our position.

Diolch yn fawr"

Leafstamp · 30/06/2021 09:57

Brilliant @EyesOpening !

I see that Sex Matters have got nearly 16k followers on Twitter. I know it's not loads in the big scheme of Twitter, but it's still impressive for an organisation that was only formed a few months ago.

And of course, real life is much bigger than Twitter Smile.
