Priti Patel Doing Her Job

Priti Patel, our Home Secretary, has been photographed attending the arrest of suspected people traffickers in London . Great you would think, the prosecution of organised crime, modern day slavery being rooted out and made an example of.

Yet ATM on SM there are masses of comments where Priti Patel is being described as a Nazi, Goebbels, evil bitch, ugly faced cow, Fascist, concentration camp guard, child murderer, and so on. She is even being criticised for her shoes, the type of footwear many South Asian heritage women wear. Also accused of masturbating (she has her hands in her pockets in the photo)

Most of these comments are from men. Why so much hate for a woman doing a tough job?

I'm not sure precisely what kind of powerful message she's sending/stance she's taking, as the only people on the other side of the 'trafficking is bad' argument are, er, traffickers. And I don't think they vote much.

Moondust001 · 20/05/2021 15:06

I WANT my Home Secretary to look like this, as suspected slave traders are carted off to the cells.

If personal abuse is being posted then that is wrong. But I WANT my Home Secretary to not be getting in the way of the Police when they are doing their jobs (not her - it's not her job) all for the chance of a photo shoot. And I also want her not to bully her employees and others, not to be a racist, and not to defend the indefensible - including promoting a bill that strips UK citizens of many of their civil rights and hands the police powers that are positively scary in relation to any free democracy. But I guess I also can't have what I want... If she genuinely cared a jot about trafficked people, then there is plnety she can do that does not involve a photo shoot, then probably carting those people off to a detention centre to await deportation back to a place where they will probably be captured and re-trafficked again (which happens a lot). But there won't be any photos in all of that.

I agree there’s a lot to criticise her for but often it appears misogynistic. I remember when she (rightly) got sacked for the Golan Heights issue, on Twitter lots of people were tracking her flight back to the UK, there was this gleeful frenzy that she was going to be sacked and I don’t think a male politician would have had the same treatment.

Oh, I think some would have had the same treatment. Dominic Raab, Michael Gove and JRM are three I definitely think would. And, I know not a politician, but Dominic Cummings would have as well.

Flaxmeadow.

As much as I hate Pritti Patel I agree with your last post.
Especially the fact it isn't hidden anymore. Thanks
And Star for pointing this out.

As if transwomen are women, but Tory women are not.
what on earth HmmConfused

And then there was Ben & Jerry’s telling her how to control the borders, even though they haven’t paid migrant workers properly. Would a male politician have been patronised like that?

Needmoresleep · 20/05/2021 14:54

Simple really.

Criticise her policies in public (though for me action against modern slavery is a good thing).

Dislike her in private.

I know people, normal, "liberal thinking, left leaning" educated middle class people who feel it is OK to slag off Tory politicians using personal and unacceptable language. I assume they feel it is OK, even admirable, to display your wokeness by using "c...", "b...." etc about people they do not know, simply because their politics are different from theirs. And from my observation it is often women attacking other women. As if transwomen are women, but Tory women are not.

A failure to marshal arguments and be able to explain why you dislike someone's politics suggests your own politics are determined by prejudice and ignorance.

She's indulging in a ridiculous photoshoot to convey the impression of a big tough Home Secretary, because her ego is smarting from events in Glasgow last week. That's all.

Some of us live in areas where people trafficking, grooming gangs, forced prostitution, black market, or even forced, labour is rife. People here, from all ethnic backgrounds, are sick to death of serious organised criminality. Often it isn't even hidden anymore, its there in your face.

Priti Patel, it seems to me, is sending out a message on crime and I expect most people, of whatever background, who live in high crime areas will be cheering her on for this stance

She wasn't 'overseeing' their arrest 😂 she was watching it: being photographed looking as menacing as one can in a flak jacket and gold shoes, is of really limited utility. I suspect the fuzz won't be lastingly grateful for her input.

QuentinBunbury · 20/05/2021 14:48

She is being criticised for her appearance in general, and particularly her facial expressions.
She does have an unfortunate habit of smirking though. I don't know if I'm being misogynistic as I genuinely can't think of any other politicians with an unfortunate cast to their face but I also criticise BoJo for his ridiculous hair and general dishevelment.

PumpkinSpiceWoman · 20/05/2021 14:46

Suspected sex traders? So where is your evidence?

Serpenta · 20/05/2021 14:41

She is over seeing the arrest of suspected people traffickers, you know serious organised crime that often exploits women, the kind of criminals who keep people enslaved

AssassinatedBeauty · 20/05/2021 14:41

I have no issue with people saying she is shit at her job and evil, that's not misogynistic. Abusing her purely by criticising her appearance only, or using misogynist terms of abuse like bitch/witch/whore or similar are not something that should be acceptable, whatever the particular politician has done. That's not "fair criticism", it's just abuse.

Flaxmeadow · 20/05/2021 14:38

It isnt just about the shoes though is it.

She is being criticised for her appearance in general, and particularly her facial expressions. That she is too hard faced but what is someone doing her job, law enforcement, on serious organised crime supposed to look like?.

She has one of the toughest jobs in the country but it's about her 'hard' appearance but worse than that she is seriously repeatedly on SM being compared to Nazi concentration camp guards. Which is ludicrous. She is over seeing the arrest of suspected people traffickers, you know serious organised crime that often exploits women, the kind of criminals who keep people enslaved

I don't give a fuck if she turns up in brogues, Yeezys, or Vibram FiveFingers: you're the one who suggested she was making some sort of point by pitching up in what appear to be gold loafers, which I'm pretty sure aren't culturally specific at all, although probably favoured by the Chiswick Russell & Bromley set.

Patapouf · 20/05/2021 14:33

@AssassinatedBeauty

Not sure how accepting misogynist comments about women you don't like helps the cause of promoting equality. That surely perpetuates the idea that some women, the ones you personally don't like, deserve to be abused with misogynistic comments.
But surely this relies on those comments actually being misogynistic. How can we determine whether the comments are because of misogyny rather than fair criticism because she has evil politics?

For me, misogyny would be saying the fact she wears make up means she can't be good at her job. Or saying that her outfits must prevent her from carrying out her role. Etc etc
Not 'she is shit and her job and evil to boot' that has nothing to do with her being a woman and everything to do with her being a self serving drawbridge-pulling Tory

TheQueef · 20/05/2021 14:31

And me Patapouf Smile
She's hard to see objectively.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/05/2021 14:30

Some just can't stomach a high profile, powerful woman.

Personally I hate the sly fucker, but the vitriol she and other female politicians receive is definitely due to misogyny.

This.

@Flaxmeadow

What is ‘south asian’ about her shoes? They’re flats...I mean. They are flat loafers.. ?

They are very popular with South Asian women. At least they are where I live

I know why as well, because they are comfortable. I used to wear them when I worked in catering, might get some more

There’s nothing inherently ‘south asian’ about flat loafers.
Patapouf · 20/05/2021 14:29

@Serpenta

Happy to mock any facet of Johnson's appearance in the name of balance.

QuentinBunbury · 20/05/2021 14:28

patapouf Same!

Flaxmeadow · 20/05/2021 14:27

Diane Abbott does too

Yup. She's made a few dodgy comments about white women in the past, but the abuse Abbott gets is really horrible and again it's mostly from men
