I've just had an email about the new inclusivity and diversify and blah plan. Is it different?

This is so sad. Our unit from brownies to senior leaders is very tight knit and I know the leaders well. For now I will see what happens as I doubt our local leaders are a driver in this fiasco at all.
@TedImgoingmad so zero safeguarding for our young women then?! How? I’m genuinely shocked it’s no wonder they are struggling to keep leaders, my DD lost her brownie leader last year she “retired” fed up with all the policy stuff. Makes me so sad that yet another area of girls life is being by eroded by male rights, and yet I feel so hamstrung in being unable to respond effectively.

I’m starting to feel an anomaly at work not putting my pronouns in my email signature I genuinely feel like the world is going mad!
Google Helen Watts and girlguiding. Your jaw will be on the floor.

Helen is (or was) an MNer.

TiltTopTable · 17/05/2021 14:28

Well making the Girl Guides mixed sex certainly meets their agenda to be more inclusive and diverse doesn't it?! How about comply with the EA, which is what they should be doing, and allow girls a safe single sex environment?

Ads for GG volunteers keep popping up on my fb timeline. I did consider it for a nanosecond, but I suspected it would be a minefield of wokeness and reality denial. Turns out it is!

PassGo · 17/05/2021 14:26

Who gets to decide on this? Who put them in that position and can they be voted out or somehow replaced? Were any Guide Leaders or parents consulted at all? Is it possible to take the decision makers to court?

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 17/05/2021 14:26

Really disappointing isn’t it. I’m conflicted, I think it’s such a great organisation for girls and young women but this is completely ridiculous

Oh and adult female leaders will have no choice but to share accommodation and bathroom facilities with trans women.

SavingsQuestions · 17/05/2021 14:17

I think I've given up hope with guiding representing girls anymore. I've taken my girls out and cant really see them being a force for women anymore. It an unbelievable shame given the unique position they hold and the good they could do. But its okay because boys who feel like girls can do "cake decorating" (no longer the cooking interest badge) or look at campaigning. Whole shift. Wish mine had gome through cubs now.

@SSwimCycle21

I’ve got two DDs, forgive my ignorance but does this mean anyone can ‘identify’ as a female and attend girl guide / brownie camps, sleep in same tents as girls, lead a female unit but be biological male? How is safeguarding upheld?!? My eldest DD is also active in competitive sport and already I’m SO so angry at what is happening in female sport being eroded by male rights over females when will it end Confused
How is safeguarding upheld? It's not.

And you as a parent are not allowed to know if your child is sharing a tent with a "transgirl". Leaders are not allowed to ask you if that is ok, because that is violating the privacy of the transgirl. Your daughter's privacy and your parental concerns are not factored in.

SSwimCycle21 · 17/05/2021 14:13

I’ve already contributed to a survey on women’s sports, is there any way to respond to this to argue to protect girls rights to feel safe in a female club??

Yes. Exactly that.

www.girlguiding.org.uk/making-guiding-happen/running-your-unit/including-all/supporting-trans-members/what-the-law-says/

It seems their reading of the equality act is they can have a “girl” only space. They then define a girl by gender not sex. And go on about not excluding people covered by the gender reassignment bit of the equality act.

Not how I read the act.
@Imasoulman sorry my post was a bit confusing if you didn't know the back story of this but I'm wary and I made the op intentionally vague....

Obviously I would find girls being excluded from girl guiding on the basis of race or ethnicity or disability abhorrent and I wouldn't send my dds there.
Thank you, yes I see your point.

I understand the concerns this raises, another safe space being threatened

TedImgoingmad · 17/05/2021 14:04

mogloveseggs it was the Research Pool consultation, now called the Insight and Innovation Pool. Would have come round in an email or in one of the newsletters in 2019. You could volunteer to be a consultee. They spoke to about 500 out of 1200 volunteers.

@ChattyLion

Imasoulman there’s a very long and sexist back story here you may want to look into on FWR threads.

Thank you, I will take a look

mogloveseggs · 17/05/2021 13:55

Well I was never asked what my thoughts were. Who have they been asking it hasn't come up in Dd guide unit either. They need to get their heads out of the sand and stop spending money on policies that don't need changing and look at the new problem certainly in my area which is where to have meetings as we are being phased out of churches and schools due to covid.

TedImgoingmad · 17/05/2021 13:49

This is a load of fluff that has come out of a consultation process (clearly while leaders were busting a gut to keep Guides going over lockdown, the powers that be were happily playing social justice warrior bingo).

As far as I can tell, their trans inclusion policy has not changed, and still plays fast and loose with the law. It is a single sex organisation that lets in certain members of the opposite sex if they make a certain assertion that is not recognised in law vis a vis minors, but excludes all other members of the opposite sex who do not make that assertion, and is therefore excluding some members of a sex class contrary to the EQA.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 17/05/2021 13:46

"Whoever they are" so does that include boys then?

Such a shame. Guides was the only place my abuser couldn't come when I was younger. Now girls don't even have that. :(

Imasoulman · 17/05/2021 13:45

@ChattyLion

Christ! It’s got to be a pisstake surely www.girlguiding.org.uk/about-us/diversity-and-inclusion/ ‘We’re sorry if anyone has felt excluded by us...’
Why is that a "pisstake"? Girls being excluded because of race, religion, disabilities ,economic reasons etc !

Have we travelled back to the seventies?

WindyScales · 17/05/2021 13:40

I got this too! I’m wondering what the real long term goal is here.
