JK Rowling has donated £1 million of royalties from one of her children’s books to help fight the Covid-19 crisis in India.

The Harry Potter author is understood to have split the sum between two UK-based charities involved in relief work, including the provision of emergency oxygen supplies.

Can't stand it when people throw the words nazi and fascist around to describe people they just don't agree with. The irony!

NotBadConsidering · 17/05/2021 12:59

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more consistent absence of ability to put together a coherent defence of an argument than the “Rowling Bad” argument. It just. Never. Comes.

Even Flat Earthers have a good crack at theirs.

SunnydaleClassProtector99 · 17/05/2021 12:58

Well that wasn't predictable. Front page of The Times tomorrow:
JK Rowling critic fails to justify her views and runs away from debate.

balconpic · 17/05/2021 12:58

Love JK she's an amazing woman

Nodal · 17/05/2021 12:57

I think JKR is probably the most inspirational woman I know of.

RedDogsBeg · 17/05/2021 12:57
^**@peachgreen Your evidence for Maya Forstater being a transphobe is?^

Could you clarify this, please, @peachgreen, it's probably best not to go around smearing other Mumsnetters without backing it up.
Like all the other questions we ask that are never answered Eresh this one won't be, or we will get because I said so which can be read as because that's what people on Twitter say/told me to say. It's no wonder that side of the 'debate' did and do so much to stop debate, they have no coherent arguments or evidence whatsoever, hence the threats, the name calling, the doxxing, the reporting to employers and the police, the smearing, the abuse.

Flippanty · 17/05/2021 12:56

Peach that is an interesting point that public figures should consider their influence before speaking. She DID consider the influence she has. I’m sure she also considered the fact that she was going to get a lot of vile abuse and people trying to cancel her and saying she is responsible for murdering trans people around the world. I’m sure she considered that people would think she was a bigot and a nazi.

She considered the fact that despite all of this she could influence the situation for good by speaking out, and empowering other women to feel like we don’t have to remain silent on the subject. She considered that she might influence parents of gnc children who are struggling with knowing what the right thing to do is and are being guided by the likes of Mermaids down an irreversible path. She considered her influence when she decided to use her platform to bring light to whistle blowers from the Tavistock who have resigned/been sacked/can’t speak publicly as their careers are at risk. She’s using her platform to speak on behalf of many psychologists/doctors/parents who are concerned about the path we are on but are scared of the consequences of speaking publicly about it.

You’ve said yourself that you don’t believe the statements she’s made are transphobic. So how can you expect her to stay silent. She doesn’t have responsibility over a few emboldened transphobes. She has a responsibility to herself and her own conscience. She’s always said she is a very conscience-led person and it doesn’t surprise me at all that she felt the need to speak on this topic. Many of us are grateful that she did use her influence to put her head on the chopping block for us.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/05/2021 12:56

I'm sure you'll continue to rip me apart for my completely non-controversial stance that JKR's charitable work can and should be separated from her views on trans rights

That's not what people are having an issue with.

littlepattilou · 17/05/2021 12:56

Good for you JK! Smile

This must be absolutely KILLING her haters. Grin (Who hate her for absolutely naff-all by the way.)

I think the young actors/actresses, (who were made famous by the Harry Potter films,) turning against her, shocked me more than anything.. But all the fans of her books and the films doing it too, was sad and depressing. The 'cancel culture' bollocks is pathetic and sad.

They've started on Jesy (formerly from Little Mix) now. Twitter are trying to cancel her. For apparently 'thin shaming' her friend, and also accusing her of trying to pretend she is a woman of colour. Because she curls her hair, puts fake tan on, and makes her lips look fuller with lip liner. Ya know, like millions of other Caucasian women! Hmm

Yet these same people were hugely supportive of Jesy when she did the TV programme about all the hate and bullying she had had since Little Mix won X Factor.

She has had the same look - ie, tanning her skin, making her lips fuller, and curling her hair, for the past 10 years. But the twitterati and social media in general have decided she deserves hate and vitriol for it now, because she 'thin-shamed' a friend (Perri I think it was, from Little Mix...)

Honestly, these people make me sick. Social media is so toxic sometimes.

Hats off to JK though! Smile Oh, and also, I agree with many people on here that JK is NOT transphobic. And many transgender folk will agree to that too. It's just the radical far-left wokies who claim that. They are the same weirdos who hang around on twitter, spouting their venom there too!

As for @cripez comment? WTAF? Shock

I have noticed most of the (few) posters on here bashing JK, and saying she is a transphobe, and a bigot, are not saying anything when other posters are asking them why. Complete Radio Silence from most. That's because they can't give an answer. Because JK ISN'T a transphobe and a bigot! (And the few responses that HAVE been given are weak and pathetic, and pretty much a load of bollocks.)

IheartJKR · 17/05/2021 12:55

Just popping in to say how much I respect and admire JKR.

Fabulous woman.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/05/2021 12:55

No mention of why Maya Forstater is a "transphobe" then?

breathhold · 17/05/2021 12:55

Oh, come on. Whether you agree that she herself has been transphobic or not, there is no denying that by coming out in support of the gender critical movement she has emboldened transphobes

@peachgreen

You are calling the gender critical movement transphobic and it isn't. Recognising that there are negative implications for women by allowing any man to identify as a woman and for that man to be treated as a women in all circumstances is not transphobic. its just trying to have an adult debate based in facts and evidence.

SunsetBeetch · 17/05/2021 12:54

@Summercocktailsinthesnow

I don't think every conversation around JKR should be around this subject! She is an incredibly talented, world class author and a renowned the world over, she is so much more than this subject that is for sure.
I totally agree. It's so tedious.

Fantastic of JK Rowling to donate so much to these two relief charities. I really admire and respect her.

peachgreen · 17/05/2021 12:53

Okay, being called "reprehensible" for not wishing to discuss someone else's experiences of sexual assault is about my limit here. I'm sure you'll continue to rip me apart for my completely non-controversial stance that JKR's charitable work can and should be separated from her views on trans rights and therefore celebrated regardless of your opinion on said views, but I'm going to hide the thread now.
@notbadconsidering We're talking about the same thing. We just have different opinions on what it is. Again, as I have repeatedly said, regardless of what you believe she has done, her charitable works deserve to be recognised.
No we are not talking about the same thing. You clearly accused her of ‘emboldening transphobes”. You wrote this on page 5:

HecatesCatsInFancyHats Oh, come on. Whether you agree that she herself has been transphobic or not, there is no denying that by coming out in support of the gender critical movement she has emboldened transphobes. It's inevitable when a public figure aligns themselves with one side of a sensitive debate

It doesn’t matter what I think she has done, you should explain why you think she has done the thing you’ve accused her of. Can you?

The only thing you’ve done to explain this is say “see Twitter”. It’s a nasty accusation you have made and if you can’t rationally explain it you should retract it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/05/2021 12:48

@peachgreen Your evidence for Maya Forstater being a transphobe is?

Could you clarify this, please, @peachgreen, it's probably best not to go around smearing other Mumsnetters without backing it up.

RedDogsBeg · 17/05/2021 12:48

You have not given a single example of JKR's "stance on trans rights".

Sorry, I didn't think I needed to? Her stance on trans rights is very clear. She made a statement outlining it. I don't agree with it. That's all I have said.

Again, @peachgreen JKR does not have a stance on trans rights she stands up for women's rights, by ignoring and obfuscating this point you are confirming that the TRA agenda is in conflict with women's rights, seeks to remove them and has a direct and negative impact on them.

Also, could you answer the question I posed earlier, it would be super for once to get an answer:

What rights do trans people not have?

Rhannion · 17/05/2021 12:48

@PopperUppleton

Given the death threats, the rape threats, the threats to children and other vulnerable people, the screams and shrieks, the physical violence meted out to women standing up for themselves, fear of trans people seems to be becoming a perfectly reasonable and proportionate response.

Unless of course trans people and/or their allies never threaten women, children and other vulnerable people with violence, death threats, rape threats, barbed-wire-wrapped baseball bats, lawsuits, browbeatings, pile-ons, threats to employers etc. But that's not so, is it? Unless it's only so-called allies threatening these things - in which case, why aren't trans people standing up in their thousands decrying the violence and the threats?

Well said Popper
OldLang · 17/05/2021 12:47

@peachgreen

Posted upthread but possibly overlooked in your haste to deny our validity as a sex class.

“I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them". - JKR

I must say that I'm surprised any human being would disagree with this sentiment.
What about trans people living their lives offends you so much?
Or is it possible that you don't actually know/understand what you're claiming to disagree with?

As for your comments about not using someone's experience in a debate, that poster seemed to use it for context important to their view and asked you a direct question (thus inviting and consenting to a discussion). Are you saying you know better than her? Especially given that no comment on the experience itself needs to be made, it's just important to the context.

Yes, all things considered, I stand with the word choice of reprehensible. Potentially adding misogynistic or gynophobic to the mix seeing as that's the done thing these days.

peachgreen · 17/05/2021 12:47

@notbadconsidering We're talking about the same thing. We just have different opinions on what it is. Again, as I have repeatedly said, regardless of what you believe she has done, her charitable works deserve to be recognised.

FedNlanders · 17/05/2021 12:47

She is wonderful

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/05/2021 12:47

than supporting the 'trans agenda' that should continue. And clearly it's not something she has any interest in backing!

334bu · 17/05/2021 12:46

But implying that Maya Forstater is a bigot is OK?
Why do you think that is acceptable?
