JK Rowling has donated £1 million of royalties from one of her children’s books to help fight the Covid-19 crisis in India.

The Harry Potter author is understood to have split the sum between two UK-based charities involved in relief work, including the provision of emergency oxygen supplies.

@AlfonsoTheTerrible

I agree. Comparing J K Rowling to Hitler is hilarious in its absurdity.

And good for Ms Rowling, donating to charity. She's wonderful.

It is. She is. A talented writer and a thoroughly decent human being. (therefore attracts sniping and hatred sadly)
Anurulz · 17/05/2021 11:45

It is amazing how easy it is these days to compare anyone they don't like to Hitler and the likes.. and apparently Indians to animals (this was new though)..

GlassBoxSpectacular · 17/05/2021 11:45

@Queenoftheashes

I heard she’s the only person to lose billionaire status due to charitable giving
What an utter bitch! Angry
OldLang · 17/05/2021 11:44

“If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth”

“The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women—i.e., to male violence—‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences—is a nonsense.”

“I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.”

Yes. Vitriolic, hateful and fear-mongering words aren't they?

And to the pp who implied that women concerned about global sex-based rights and protections are sychophants following an "overlord", you look like the bigoted one here. It should only take one woman to say no. Anything else is removing our consent.

I absolutely despair.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 17/05/2021 11:44

@SmallPrawnEnergy

She lost her status due to some charitable giving but mainly tax rates taking her below the £bn. She also wasn’t the first but I know the “feminists” here won’t have a bad word spoke about their overlord.

Why the "" around feminists? You can use the word you know, it's perfectly legitimate.

She's not my overlord (or lady - how outdated and misgendering to use a male gendered term when JKR uses the pronouns she / her) by the way.

breathhold · 17/05/2021 11:43

@cripez

Hitler loved his animals but he still went all out on creating the perfect race. Still evil.

Would be nice if, one day, she directed a small amount of her wealth, not even a tenth of the amount mentioned above, to supporting trans kids and their families.

Wouldn't kill her.

Grin

Did you write that as parody?

Its so hard to tell nowadays.

ArabellaScott · 17/05/2021 11:42

4 posts?! Godwin's Law working extra hard today! Criminy.

DialSquare · 17/05/2021 11:42

One has a moustache, hth

Unfortunately that wouldn't help if you were comparing me to Hitler.

breathhold · 17/05/2021 11:41

@ArabellaScott

How very awful of her. Weaponising her wealth like that.
Grin

That made me laugh and laugh!

DialSquare · 17/05/2021 11:40

There are many Tans people who agree with JKR. Are they extreme too?

hellandhairnets · 17/05/2021 11:40

there is no denying that by coming out in support of the gender critical movement she has emboldened transphobes

You might want to define "transphobe". If you mean "woman who stands up for women's rights" or "woman who knows her sex matters" then I fail to see what differentiates you from any other misogynist. The "gender critical movement' incidentally is what used to be known as feminism. Support of sex stereotypes about masculinity and femininity (which is what gender identity theory does) has never been feminism in any way.

JKR has not changed her views on women's rights. What has changed is that we're now all expected to agree that sex stereotypes are good and 'natural dentities', that putting gender nonconforming and lesbian teenage girls on medical pathways to transition, including hormones and mastectomies, as soon as possible with no questions asks is ethical or adequate 'healthcare', that women who want single sex spaces are evil bigots who need re-education and that any woman asking questions about an overtly anti-feminist and sexist ideology is some kind of hatemonger who should be sent death and rape threats and be fired from their jobs and demonised worldwide as a transphobe.

Frankly, I can see exactly where the bigotry is coming from and it isn't from JK Rowling or those who support her.

TedImgoingmad · 17/05/2021 11:40

Talking about women's rights isn't transphobia though. It's talking about women's rights.

Phobia is hatred and fear. Commonly thought to manifest in verbal and physical attacks, mob violence, social exclusion etc. Where and when has this happened at the behest of JK Rowling?

AdditionalCharacter · 17/05/2021 11:39

@Hoppinggreen

I often struggle to tell the difference between JKR and Hitler. Probably because both wrote books
One has a moustache, hth
youvegottenminuteslynn · 17/05/2021 11:38

@cripez

Comparing someone to Hitler, trivialising the inhumanity of the Nazi regime.

Comparing Indian people to animals.

You sound nice.

Helleofabore · 17/05/2021 11:37

Actually Kit, Oprah is a very good comparison as is Beyonce.

BaronessWrongCrowd · 17/05/2021 11:36

How has she ‘legitimatised transphobia’ Peach? Did you actually read what she said and why was her defence of women and girls so bad. Don’t they matter?

Helleofabore · 17/05/2021 11:36

So would you not consider a president of a powerful country stating their unequivocal support that gender is prioritised over sex an even more 'powerful' voice then?

NotBadConsidering · 17/05/2021 11:35

“Emboldened transphobes” is TRA speak for given women and allies the courage to speak out for women’s rights. Given “transphobe” is such a vague term which includes people who don’t want convicted sex offenders housed in women’s prisons, don’t want males in women’s sport, and are concerned about children making life-changing decisions that will medicalise their bodies for the rest of their lives at an age they can’t consent, I am eternally grateful for JK Rowling giving people the strength to stand up for these concerns.

ChloeCrocodile · 17/05/2021 11:34

And emboldened to do what?

To talk publicly about women's rights, obviously. And we wouldn't want anyone to feel emboldened to do that, now would we?!

DameCelia · 17/05/2021 11:34

But @peachgreen , the only reason you can't think of another one is because the rest of them have either been cancelled, are too worried about the backlash (something JKR doesn't have to worry about) or haven't yet seen the extent to which women's rights may be damaged or children harmed.
Note use of 'may' before labelling me a transphobic bigot please.

Kit19 · 17/05/2021 11:33

no one who is as high profile as JKR on the other side??? really??
Emma Watson
Daniel Radcliffe
Rupert Grint
Margaret Atwood
Stephen King
Sophie Turner
Miley Cyrus
Oprah Winfrey
Beyonce

and that's just off the top of my head.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 17/05/2021 11:32

Hitler? If everyone was a little bit more JK we wouldn't have so many fucked up kids battling for mental health support they wouldn't need if they hadn't been groomed to believe that destroying their bodies will end all their problems.
@HecatesCatsInFancyHats Oh, come on. Whether you agree that she herself has been transphobic or not, there is no denying that by coming out in support of the gender critical movement she has emboldened transphobes. It's inevitable when a public figure aligns themselves with one side of a sensitive debate.
I don't agree she has been transphobic. You obviously think she has been, so where is your proof?

She has come out in support of women being able to talk about their experiences (in her case, domestic violence) and to be able to refer to themselves using the common terminology women have been using to describe themselves for millennia. What part of that is transphobic and encouraging transphobes?

Name a single transphobe she has "emboldened". And emboldened to do what?
