JK Rowling has donated £1 million of royalties from one of her children’s books to help fight the Covid-19 crisis in India.

The Harry Potter author is understood to have split the sum between two UK-based charities involved in relief work, including the provision of emergency oxygen supplies.

I'm sure you wouldn't state that on Twitter though!

Again, not sure how this is relevant to my original point, but I actually did say on Twitter that I didn't think her initial statement was transphobic.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 17/05/2021 12:20

@peachgreen

Again, I have not called her transphobic.

Good to know you don't think JKR is transphobic. I'm sure you wouldn't state that on Twitter though!

peachgreen · 17/05/2021 12:20

Oh I assumed you were saying she shouldn't have spoken out on a "sensitive" debate because that caused transphobia (because of who she is), which you haven't produced any evidence of. So you do think she was right to speak out on that issue? I'm confused. Are you policing what JKR can say or not?

No, I said ANY public figure who speaks out on a high profile debate should consider their influence before doing so. That is not preventing anyone from speaking out.

ArabellaScott · 17/05/2021 12:19

@Sexnotgender

Is the law transphobic too?

Everything is transphobic.

Can confirm: wingsoverscotland.com/everything-is-transphobic/
peachgreen · 17/05/2021 12:18

What did she do that is transphobic?

Again, I have not called her transphobic. And again, my original point:

Regardless of your opinions of her position on the debate around trans rights, she has done many wonderful things which are worthy of acknowledgement.

HecatesCatsInFancyHats · 17/05/2021 12:17

@peachgreen

And you don't think women should be able to talk about women's rights, particularly not if they have a wide reach and a high profile?

I didn't say this either?

Oh I assumed you were saying she shouldn't have spoken out on a "sensitive" debate because that caused transphobia (because of who she is), which you haven't produced any evidence of. So you do think she was right to speak out on that issue? I'm confused. Are you policing what JKR can say or not?

@FlibbertyGiblets

Godwin's Law is a beautiful thing to see in the wild.
It's not often you see a true Godwin's these days, delightful plumage on this one
peachgreen · 17/05/2021 12:17

@summercocktailsinthesnow Weirdly, that was my original point. Her views on the trans debate do not diminish her many good works, regardless of whether or not you agree with them.

Purpletomato · 17/05/2021 12:17

Awesome woman.

EL8888 · 17/05/2021 12:17

She’s a total disgrace!

Hitler?!

TedImgoingmad · 17/05/2021 12:16

@peachgreen

*Emma Watson Daniel Radcliffe Rupert Grint Margaret Atwood Stephen King Sophie Turner Miley Cyrus Oprah Winfrey Beyonce*

None of them are as involved as JKR. They have made one off or occasional statements of support.

I don't agree she has been transphobic. You obviously think she has been, so where is your proof?

I didn't say she had been transphobic. I said she had aligned herself with the gender critical movement. I don't think anyone would argue with that.

Name a single transphobe she has "emboldened". And emboldened to do what?

I mean, simply clicking on any of her tweets and reading the replies underneath will illuminate this for you. And emboldened to be openly transphobic. Obviously.

So, we can agree. Aligning oneself with, or indeed being, gender critical is not synonymous with transphobia. So what is your problem?

If she tweets, she has no control over other people's responses. In much the same way as, when she tweets, she is subject to rape and death threats from trans rights activists, over which she has no control. Are you blaming her for other people's reactions to her talking about women's issues? Again, unless she actually said anything transphobic, actual or implied, or encouraged anyone to say anything transphobic, then she has no case to answer.

Much of this depends, of course, on your definition of transphobia. And it is clear that any woman wanting to stand up for her rights enshrined in the Equality Act, and to talk about her body and experiences in her own terms, is not a transphobe.

So again. What did she do that is transphobic?

Summercocktailsinthesnow · 17/05/2021 12:16

I don't think every conversation around JKR should be around this subject! She is an incredibly talented, world class author and a renowned the world over, she is so much more than this subject that is for sure.

peachgreen · 17/05/2021 12:15

@reddogsbeg If you read my previous posts you'll see that I have already condemned those actions?

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 17/05/2021 12:15

@peachgreen why do you think MF is a transphobe?

So she's not allowed to say that biological sex is a relativity but you can label her a transphobe on a public forum?

RedDogsBeg · 17/05/2021 12:13

Any public figure who takes "a side" in a sensitive debate should take care to distance themselves from the extremes of said debate, yes.

Extremes of the said debate? You mean the extremes like rape and death threats, telling women to choke on their ladydick, die in a grease fire? The side that flooded JKR's Twitter feed of children's illustrations for her book The Ickabog with disgusting images of porn? Those extremes? Those actions and exhortations come from the side you have picked peachgreen.

You also seem to be yet another one who has a problem understanding the Maya Forstater case, maybe you should do what your side are always telling us to do and educate yourself.

Sexnotgender · 17/05/2021 12:12

Is the law transphobic too?

Everything is transphobic.

peachgreen · 17/05/2021 12:12

You seem to be making them synonymous, so it would be helpful for you to clarify that being a gender critical feminist does not make you a transphobe (someone who hates trans people) then it won't be taken as an insult.

Being a gender critical feminist does not make someone a transphobe. Very happy to clarify that and I have never said otherwise.

You are literally saying you will not listen to lives experiences that contradict your view.

No, I am absolutely listening to your lived experiences and I respect them. I am just not going to address them as part of an online debate. It's not my place to do so.

yourhairiswinterfire · 17/05/2021 12:11

Again, I have not said that she's transphobic. I have said that by publicly supporting GC feminists / transphobes (yes, I consider MF to be a transphobe), she has emboldened transphobes.

Did you catch Maya's appeal? The one where EHRC intervened to confirm that the law actually says what Maya said, or as Maya's QC put it, Maya's views are ''on all fours with the law''.

Is the law transphobic too?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 17/05/2021 12:11

why do you think survivors such as myself shouldn’t be engaged with? How fucking disgusting.

Another crock of shit dished out toward survivors of sexual assault on this site.

This attitude is becoming increasingly pervasive and it sickens me. There are also no prizes for guessing where it's coming from.

peachgreen · 17/05/2021 12:10

@youvegottenminuteslynn I'm not au fait enough with hate speech laws to know whether or not they should be prosecuted (I imagine so, though) but of course it is absolutely unacceptable. Again, I'm not sure what bearing that has on this discussion. I've simply stated that while I don't agree with JKR's stance on trans rights, I still recognise her many charitable contributions and the important work she has done in areas like MS research, and that she - like the rest of us - has done and will continue to do good and bad things, because that is being human.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 17/05/2021 12:10

They are not lies. JKR has directly stated her support for leading GC figures like Maya Forstater. I assume the majority of the women posting on this thread would consider themselves to be GC, so I don't see why calling JKR GC is considered to be an insult?

Gender critical feminist is not an insult. Transphobe is.

You seem to be making them synonymous, so it would be helpful for you to clarify that being a gender critical feminist does not make you a transphobe (someone who hates trans people) then it won't be taken as an insult.

ProudExclu · 17/05/2021 12:09

@peachgreen but what I’ve experienced is exactly what JKR spoke out about. So you are refusing to listen to evidence. You are literally saying you will not listen to lives experiences that contradict your view.

peachgreen · 17/05/2021 12:08

So, if she had left it at her tweet about Maya and NOT addressed the abuse that was coming her way in anyway shape or form, you would have been happy with that and not stated that she was transphobic then?

Again, I have not said that she's transphobic. I have said that by publicly supporting GC feminists / transphobes (yes, I consider MF to be a transphobe), she has emboldened transphobes.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 17/05/2021 12:07

@peachgreen

Do you think the people on Twitter who said 'choke on my lady dick' etc to JKR should be prosecuted for hate speech / harassment?

Helleofabore · 17/05/2021 12:07

@peachgreen

Now you are really reaching.

I'm really not. JKR has publicly and repeatedly aligned herself with gender critical feminists. That's why she's so popular on these boards, no? I'm sure you don't see that as something to be ashamed of, so why deny that she's done it?

So, if she had left it at her tweet about Maya and NOT addressed the abuse that was coming her way in anyway shape or form, you would have been happy with that and not stated that she was transphobic then?

Just to be clear?

A woman who defended herself against online abuse coming from males threatening her and invading children's story twitter threads, is phobic. If she had left it at the one tweet and taken the abuse quietly, she would have been ok?
