Here’s a Mermaids fuck-up to brighten your Sunday morning...

So in a tweet yesterday Mermaids (shock horror) MISGENDERED non-binary Owen J. Harcum, saying that HE had been elected Mayor of Bangor.

A while later they deleted the tweet, reposted it using “they” instead of “he” and issued an apology, basically blaming their accidental hate crime on Grammarly, which I believe is a proofreading app.

Grammarly then responded calling them out on their blatant and quite possibly libellous lie, and so Mermaids deleted that tweet too.

Hope Grammarly sue their asses.

@nevertrustaherdofcows

Surely 'Ladies and Gentlemen' / 'Boys and Girls' sums up non-binaries, rather than excluding non-binaries?
Oh no no no, that’s even worse!!

London North Eastern Railway tells staff to speak 'WITHOUT mentioning gender' after 'non-binary' LGBT rail union rep complained about train conductor's cheery greeting to 'ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls' aboard

In all seriousness how did the councillors of Bangor decide that this was the person best fitted to represent their town?

A pretend Welsh person who vindictively pursues women who fail to observe the trans purity whilst happily forgiving Mermaids for something they’d be looking to have other people at the very least ‘re educated’ for

Are they all students or something?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/05/2021 11:06

But if you write 'they is' you sound illiterate. I would take the long way round and re-write as much as possible to avoid any pronouns at all in those circumstances.

WarriorN · 16/05/2021 11:04

This pronoun stuff is very ableist.

Children with additional needs really don't need the English language and social communication to be any more difficult than it already is.

Not to mention being gaslit about men and women. Which is very important for vulnerable young people who trust far too easily and have a limited awareness of danger.

WarriorN · 16/05/2021 11:02

🤣

@NotBadConsidering

I’ll remember this when MNHQ gives me a strike for the same.

More concerning is this person who doesn’t tolerate other views being elected mayor.

As well as identifying as non-binary, the non-binary mayor identifies as Welsh (even though they is English).

In a discussion about equality, the councillor had written: "You are Welsh if you feel Welsh, being born abroad has nothing to do with that."

*Grammar point - when 'they' is used for a person of known sex and non-binary gender, should we use 'they is' or 'they are'? I think that 'they is' works better, because otherwise it looks as though there is more than one of them. It's clearer in the normal use of 'they' for someone of unknown sex, because the context normally makes it clear that it's only one person being referred to.

Tambora · 16/05/2021 10:46

Surely 'they' is the plural and the correct word to use should be 'it'?

guinnessguzzler · 16/05/2021 10:42

Talking about owning your mistakes in the same sentence as blaming someone else HmmConfusedBlush

Hilarious! Love it!

This puts them on the same level of misgendering (calling a NB person "he" by accident) that Maya Forstater is constantly accused of.

Helleofabore · 16/05/2021 10:34

There are also many other questions to be asked here (that cannot be asked on MN without deletion) including the old double standard about females who might deviate from a strictly professional look running for office etc.

SingToTheSky · 16/05/2021 10:34

@crunchermuncher

Awesome- you couldn't make it up.

"Us of the trans community" I think if they had really used Grammarly to check their tweet it would have pointed out that it's "we". More mangling of language.

MANgling? How bigoted. Surely you mean theygling
Letsgetreadytocrumble · 16/05/2021 10:33

How can you not even be able to proofread a tweet either when, presumably, your actual job is social media comms.

Helleofabore · 16/05/2021 10:32

Well we know just how forgiving they are :

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-56276997

I look forward to seeing this person cancel Mermaids.

Letsgetreadytocrumble · 16/05/2021 10:31

Hahahahahahaha!

What a bunch of absolute clowns.

And how very groundbreaking that another male has been elected to a position of political office....

NautaOcts · 16/05/2021 10:17

Love it 😁

CardinalLolzy · 16/05/2021 10:15

I see in the original tweet Mermaids couldn't decide if non-binary is hyphenated or not. Maybe they should do their non-binary clients and friends the absolute basic courtesy of looking up how to correctly write it? Odd that Grammarly didn't pick up on that either...........

Hoist by their own woke petard.

Good.

Thingybob · 16/05/2021 10:12

Haven't Mermaids always made it clear that you don't need to be the victim to report any transphobic behaviour as a hate crime?

CardinalLolzy · 16/05/2021 10:09

It's one thing to misgender (which we are told still hurts regardless if it was an accident: www.vice.com/en/article/mbdx7n/100-ways-be-trans-ally-tips )

but to lie and blame it on software is typically weaselly and dishonest of them.

If whoever posted the tweet can't proofread a tweet themselves, given the amount of money Mermaids are given to recruit staff, then perhaps they are in the wrong job.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 16/05/2021 10:08

But i agree, grammarly should not let it go either!
