Girl pushed under train.

The girls all have to run past the boys to board the train.
One girl is kicked in the face, spat on, shoved, tripped up, and ends up falling on to the tracks.

The guard in they hi vis yellow jacket just watches.

I'm at the end of my tether with male violence and entitlement.

If the police don't do anything I think the public will. I'm going from things I've seen wrote on their Facebook pages. The way the journalist described a kick to the face is disgraceful.
I hate to think what they will be like in a few years time.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 13/05/2021 19:48

I hope their mums (usually the mums isn’t it?) are waiting for them. If kill DS if he pulled some crap like that.

NewlyGranny · 13/05/2021 19:46

Harried Harriet, those three have now been released without charge. 🙄

Gardai say the investigation is ongoing, though.

Interesting minimisation from the journalist, when a kick to the face is reported as "swinging a leg." 😠

HeirloomTomato · 13/05/2021 19:42

Let's hope they get some significant consequences and we don't get the usual Irish response to youth crime of 'boys will be boys / they're good lads, just a bit young for their age' or 'the family are well-known and respected in the community, active in the local GAA / football / rugby / whatever / club'. Hmm

One of them is only 13, imagine what he will be like at 19, or 29. Scumbag.

I think the RTÉ journalist’s description of the events on the CCTV tape is not entirely accurate (no mention of the girl who went under the train being tripped by the bike-rider) and it comes across as equivocal in its description of the events - perhaps it has to be written that way before any legal proceedings happen but I think it undermines the deliberateness of what we can clearly see happening on the recording.

Shocking report - disgrace actually.

She tripped and fell? Nope - she was pushed, clear as day.

I have written in a complaint.

And hiding behing the "legal" argument is weak.

@SuperSleepyBaby

Just reading that reminded me - i was about 20 and out for a jog in the afternoon. A boy in his teens went by me - he was alone - and without saying anything spat all over my face. I was so stunned as I had no interaction with him before - I just froze and said nothing and he cycled off. It was so disgusting having to clean it off and I told no one. I imagine he did that to lots of other people to.
Let's hope he did it to the 'wrong' person That is horrifying and disturbing
AlecTrevelyan006 · 13/05/2021 13:47

@maymaymayI

They have arrested 3 of the boys -but if this had not gone viral i’d say they would have got away with it. They are likely only to get cautions as they are minors

The guards don't decide who to arrest based on social media Hmm

The incident occurred on 1 April and the gardai have had all the relevant images and info since then and seem not to have done an awful lot with it.

I suspect that the social media furore encouraged them to pull their fingers out

NewlyGranny · 13/05/2021 13:34

Good news on the arrests!

As for access to the train, I understand the boys were being thrown off the train, so only the door they were leaving through was open. The rest were locked, presumably to prevent them getting straight back on. This forced the young women to go to that one door, running the gauntlet of the boys.

A second platform guard could have opened and monitored a second door in another carriage for passengers to enter.

I hope lessons are learned. I hope consequences ensue.

Would they have bothered if this hadn't had the exposure? I somehow doubt it.

Based on what i have seen the Gardai don’t pursue a lot of these low level matters - this happened at the start of April and they only acted once it went viral.

GCAcademic · 13/05/2021 12:49

I'd be interested to know how this got onto social media in the first place. Does anyone know? It was CCTV footage, as I understand, which means that someone who had access to that released it. Was that the police, or someone fed up because the police weren't doing their job?

SirVixofVixHall · 13/05/2021 12:39

When police fail to stop this behaviour communities are left with two options, either put up with it or police it themselves. I know if that was my daughter, how I would be feeling, which is why we need good policing, so that people don’t retaliate .
Unbelievable it has taken this long for arrests to be made when that gang is on camera.

KarenMarlow3 · 13/05/2021 12:38

It's absolutely appalling that a fuss has to be created to get a result
Agreed.

“BREAKING: Gardai have arrested three youths (aged 13-16) over a violent disorder incident at Howth Junction last month in which a teenage girl was knocked underneath a train.
Mobile phones, clothing and bikes were also seized.”

NewlyGranny · 13/05/2021 11:30

Women-only facilities, apart from places where women will be undressed or partially dressed, pander to the particularly unpleasant myth that men are barbaric monsters who are unable to control themselves and would all be better locked away from decent society.

That kind of thinking leads to rigid gender stereotyping and deprivation of opportunities for women, who can't be permitted to attend university/work outside the home/leave the home without being escorted by a phalanx of make relatives etc etc.

Let's not even start down that road!

porki · 13/05/2021 11:18

I would suggest women only trains, platforms, waiting rooms, wards etc which I've often thought would solve a lot of sexist attacks but then I watched a YouTube video on some man visiting Chechhya (notoriously misogynistic) and they have curtained off womens only seating in cafes and womens only beaches yet the women there are far from liberated..

KarenMarlow3 · 13/05/2021 10:07

Going back to the theme of corporal punishment I attended school where this was a form of punishment. I can categorically say whilst it is not ideal, the use of corporal punishment made my life in school so much better. It made me feel much safer.
I completely agree. No,it isn't ideal, but it was a far better system than today's wishy washy 'naughty step' or 'gentle hands, darling.'
I am late sixties, and remember schooldays when children were well behaved, there was very little disruption in class and yes, children were sometimes afraid of their teachers. I once got the ruler for speaking in class. It didn't cause lasting damage, but it certainly stopped me from ever speaking in class again. I didn't want it twice.Society, on the whole, didn't tolerate the kind of loutish behaviour that is seen today.
I'm not advocating severe beatings, but a couple of strokes of the cane would work wonders on the kind of feral thugs that are around today.
Corporal punishment is not worthy of the horrified reaction that most people have, at the thought of a child being smacked when naughty. Instead of proper discipline, today's immediate reaction to naughtiness is to seek some kind of medical diagnosis. Children today are never naughty, they have a "condition.'

Abhannmor · 13/05/2021 10:01

@NewlyGranny

The petition can't do any harm, can it? If the young man isn't in fact signed to the club, the petition means he will probably never be, even when the furore over his actions dies down. Moreover, it makes him practically unsignable to any club.

There need to be consequences to actions like this. One of the first things I taught my children was that people are not for hitting/kicking etc. Either he wasn't taught this or he doesn't consider young women to be people...

That's my thinking too. It will send a signal to other sporting clubs and his fellow scumbags . No blame attaches to Shelbourne football club of course but this issue needs wide publicity.
toffeebutterpopcorn · 13/05/2021 09:47

The thing is - someone lives with, works with, shops with this man. If that was my husband, son or a colleagued I would have recognised him. I know what clothes my 2 wear when out jogging and where/when.

I assumed he was someone over in London for a short period, staying in a hotel or company flat, and the video wasn’t really shown abroad. We used to get a lot of these when I worked in the city.
