I can't remember ever hearing of a woman committing such a crime. I'm shocked, stunned, almost catatonic in disbelief.

Almost word for word!

Cross post!

If this had happened ten years ago, there wouldn't have been any distrust of the reporting.

However, the online disquiet about this terrible, tragic case is symptomatic of what happens when the press become known for publishing according to a particular rule-book.

somethinginoffensive · 05/05/2021 08:57

Whilst it's unusual for a woman to do something like this I don't think its unheard of so I'm not sure why people are obsessed with the idea that she is a male.

It's about trust, ten years ago if I had seen a headline stating "a woman ..." I would have trusted that the article was talking about a woman.

I do understand the frustration of people asking why it is still being questioned, but put the blame where it lies, on the people who decided that woman sometimes means man.

@KimThomas

The lack of coverage is in large part down to the guilty plea and lack of a trial to cover. The other elements are, I think, the troubled personal life of the victim and the fact that the killer is clearly mentally ill. It’s not a story that is easy to frame within established media narratives.
Good points.

@SunshineCake

Apologies. I misread. Eye sight is deteriorating.
I made the same mistake.

"It does not appear to have been a women's refuge but an HMO with support service/s attached."

So?

R0wantrees · 05/05/2021 08:29

I think it happened early covid where covid took over every news story, they were both vulnerable to have ended up in a women's refuge, Gareeca obviously has issues that would have had to be investigated. Plenty of reasons not to have a media frenzy

Earlybirdmissedtheworm · 05/05/2021 08:22

Commented on a few of these posts stating that Gareeca is a blood relative of someone close to me and definitely a female - born female.

Just being a woman wouldn't prevent someone from being evil.

The details were out at the beginning but like with any other case, things are held back until court.
It's a tragedy whatever way you look at it and once again, maybe if someone got the mental health support they needed it may have been avoided.

Pota2 · 05/05/2021 08:07

@PicsInRed what sort of chatter. A GC journalist was at the sentencing hearing (Jo Bartosch). This isn’t a male person. Seriously.

With Eltiona Skana, people didn’t think a woman would grab a random child and slit her throat. Yet she did. She was extremely mentally ill. Sometimes it can make people do unbelievable horrific things.

Pota2 · 05/05/2021 08:04

@toffeebutterpopcorn

Why was the identity - even photos - of the murderer kept so secret?
Because she was undergoing psychiatric assessment to see whether she was able to be held responsible for it. See also the Eltiona Skana case which also wasn’t widely reported. I mean do you think the Daily Mail etc would hold back on reporting just because the offender was trans?
denverRegina · 05/05/2021 07:49

"If she asks to be separated from the general prison population she will be. Not necessarily isolation but some prisoner are separated."

@Flaxmeadow no she won't, there's nowhere to put her for a start. Prisoners aren't just separated because they ask to be.

OverByYer · 05/05/2021 07:28

I agree @toffeebutterpopcorn, I have been following this story for a while and the details were so scant that I was sure G was a TW. But now alll details are out it’s not the case but I don’t understand why it’s been so down played in the media

PicsInRed · 05/05/2021 07:27

@oldwomanwhoruns

I am not buying this story. Not buying it.
No indeed. There's already some chatter online.

Pota2 · 05/05/2021 07:02

@oldwomanwhoruns

I didn't say that, *@Pota2* I didn't say that at all.

But I don't buy that a modern, young, person, leaves no internet trace.

What do you mean by that? I know loads of younger people who have no social media (or have it in a different name) and wouldn't necessarily appear in an internet search. For instance, if a person is arrested or comes to public attention some other way, they very often delete all public profiles. And, if you think about it, 'leaving an internet trace' is something more connected with the middle classes. Eg, if you go to uni, then get a job at some company with a big web presence, you're likely to have a profile on there. If you leave school and work at Tesco or are unemployed, why would there be any internet trace of you?

For instance, I have social media but none in my own name. If you search my name, you will find lots of work-related stuff but that's because I work in a relatively high-profile career. I don't think there is anything about me on the internet that isn't to do with work (not been arrested or featured on the news or anything) but if my job was being a cleaner, none of that would be there and I'd be 'invisible' too.

What do you mean? You still think she’s a man. She’s very evidently not. She went to an all girls school and classmates have said they knew her. She was coerced into prostitution and has a serious mental health condition. She was undergoing psychiatric assessment which is why the press held off a bit. It reminds me a bit of the Eltiona Skana case which was also subject to restricted reporting.

Look, it’s ludicrous to say that women never commit crimes like this. Not as often, no, but it definitely happens. Women can be violent too. By insisting that this must have been a man when there are photos of a woman and absolutely no evidence that she was trans, you make yourself look really stupid.

oldwomanwhoruns · 05/05/2021 05:52

Flaxmeadow · 04/05/2021 22:51

AnnaMagnani
She won't be the only woman in there capable of a violent attack in response to rejection or anything she has misunderstood due to her personality disorder.
The prison officers will be dealing with behaviour like this every day from very damaged women.

Oh please stop making excuses for this sexual predator and cold blooded killer. The judge at sentencing stated that her personality disorder had not "distorted" her reality. Also that the crime was aggravated because the victim might have lived had she recieved medical attention. Her last 'hours', spent with the killer, must have terrifying. Many women have the same difficult past and mental health issues as the killer, but are not capable of that.

I doubt she would be in isolation at all.

If she asks to be separated from the general prison population she will be. Not necessarily isolation but some prisoner are separated.

Hopefully she will not get parole, '23 years' is the minimum, and serve the rest of her life in prison.

Brokenpencilsarepointless · 04/05/2021 22:44

I really thought this would have more coverage. There are just so many aspects of it which are shocking and well, newsworthy. I cant get over that she would have lived for a few hours after tha attack, just slowly fading away, with her murdered in the room. It's so awful, but its hurried halfway down the news sites. I dont understand.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 04/05/2021 22:36

This was reported on my local BBC radio at the time and again today. (I live on the opposite side of the county in question). They said on reports today that police only stopped Gordon as they were chasing up on covid lockdown breaches.

The brutality of it is shocking and very unusual. Not sure why the reporting is so bad nationally.

Deliriumoftheendless · 04/05/2021 22:27

Miss Barbary- yes, both had horrendous childhoods, basically everything that can shape a psychopathic sexual predator was present. Horrendous.

Not to excuse what they did- they were/are horrific people who tortured, raped and murdered people including their own kids. But none of it happened in a vacuum.

You would hope enough lessons were learned to stop it happening again, but doubtful.

AnnaMagnani · 04/05/2021 22:26

Even the paragraph on Rose West's Wikipedia page on her childhood is enough for me to know I don't want to read a book.

I work with offenders some of whom come from homes of multigenerational abuse. They have no clue how to interact with another adult in a normal way or how a normal loving sexual relationship works. And one wonders how far back in their family tree you would have to go to find someone that did.
