I can't remember ever hearing of a woman committing such a crime. I'm shocked, stunned, almost catatonic in disbelief.

That's good Denver.

I hope it will have reassured the posters who were concerned about the women they would be in prison with.

Distractable · 05/05/2021 20:24

If you watch the video from West Midlands Police on their Facebook page fb.watch/5iGnA7EaBI/, you'll hear Gareeca's voice. Definitely a woman. Such a desperately awful case. HMOs with 'support' are a complete scam. Just a money making scheme for landlords.

@NiceGerbil the prison system doesn't need to implement any special measures to deal with a Cat A prisoner, they do it all the time.

Believe me, this crime is horrific but within the prison system where this offender is now held she's not sensational by any means.

NiceGerbil · 05/05/2021 20:21

Thanks for that info. Not an area I am knowledgeable in!

cateycloggs · 05/05/2021 20:20

@NiceGerbil

The suitcases her body was in? What the hell? No there is zero public interest in seeing that. How horrible for her family.
Yes exactly, I have just sent an email of complaint making that point (I tried not to be too personal about my reaction) and asking why they used the video. Now I am wondering if I can complain to West Midlands Police about the release of the video to news outlets.

@NiceGerbil

Just had a look there are 3 high security psychiatric hosps in the UK.

If there's no sign of massive MH probs prob won't go there.

There are some cat 1 women's prisons in England so presumably one of those, where they will be equipped to handle women who are potentially dangerous.

Broadmoor is a high security mental health hospital for male patients only. Rampton, one of the other two high security MH hospitals in England, takes women. My understanding is that personality disorders aren't classified as a mental illness. Grey area, like addiction issues.

Perhaps because this is in my local city and I lived in the area for some years, I well remember the horrifying news that such a crime had been committed and the murderer caught almost by accident. As she was caught and charged almost immediately any reporting would have been sub judice before the trial wouldn't it? There seem to have been quite a few similiar cases in that the murderer was identified or confessed very quickly but the case took over a year to have been brought to trial over the past year.

As I said it is local to me. I keep gettingemail notifications of the video of police finding and opening the evidence suitcases from the local news live email notifications. This is something I would never look at and I do wonder what is the point of the police releasing such footage to the news sites and of anyone looking at it? Should this be legally allowed when there is no helping the police or identification issue involved? I was thinking of starting a thread about that point myself but I certainly do not want to explain to anyone who does not already know the details.

Female adult prisoners Edit
Women are also classified into four categories. These categories are:[1]

Restricted Status is similar to Category A for men.

Those whose escape would be highly dangerous to the public or national security. Offences that may result in consideration for Category A or Restricted Status include [Attempted] Murder, Manslaughter, [Attempted] Rape, Sexual Assault, Armed robbery, Wounding with intent, Kidnapping, Importing or supplying Class A controlled drugs, Possessing or supplying explosives, Offences connected with terrorism and Offences under the Official Secrets Act[2]

I think they will find a suitable place.

Unsure33 · 05/05/2021 19:24

There has been quite a lot of reporting but she pleaded guilty so there was not a full blown trial to report as such .

It's a very rare crime for a woman to commit but happens obv.

What this shows up is that the mangling of language and the reporting guidelines have led to plenty of people not trusting reports about crimes that are massively usually committed by men.

On the other hand, many will get the idea (from other cases) that women commit far more sex offences and violent offences than they do, which helps MRA arguments.

15 years ago no one would have questioned the sex of this person based on the crime.

On prison, does Broadmoor still exist? That's mixed isn't it.. Don't know what sort of things you have to have done/ what MH issues etc so don't know whether she might go there.

There was a man helping her, I wonder how he knew her and why he got involved.
I gather he wasn't involved with her as such, he was the taxi/Uber driver whom GG booked for various trips. It was because he was stopped by police for a 'what are you doing out of your local area' COVID–19 routine stop near the wooded land that some of the more incriminating evidence was discovered.

It looks like he had no involvement or knowledge beyond being the unwitting courier (so to speak).

It's rare for women to murder adults- It's not particularly rare for women to murder their children.

I've seen plenty sickening reports in my lifetime of unspeakable cruelty by women- sometimes in concert with a male partner but often on their own, or in the case of Liam Fee, by 2 women in a lesbian relationship.

Maybe women don't pick on victims their own size.

Yes. I think all murderers tend to go for victims that they perceive to be weaker than themselves. There are some really horrific child murder cases with female perpetrators. There is also a case from the US where a woman stabbed pregnant woman and cut her baby out of her womb. The idea that women are meek and mild and never violent is a stereotype. Some women are. Much fewer than there are violent men but there are some out there. They don’t necessarily pose a risk to other women in prison though. If anything, they are likely to be targets for violence from other prisoners. Therefore, this is not at all the same as putting males in female prisons.

It's rare but it does happen. The murder of Jayna Murray by her work colleague Brittany Norwood was a horrifically violent attack by a woman.

The acid attack by Berlinah Wallace on her former partner was pretty horrific. Technically not murder as he survived but opted for euthanasia in Belgium after dozens of operations and constant pain. This case was a big part of why I never use Amazon now - she bought a litre of Sulphuric Acid from them for £10 no questions asked. Often wondered why she is not notorious like Beverly West - maybe not enough lurid sex involved?

ChattyLion · 05/05/2021 09:46

Is there going to be an inquiry? Weren’t they both in temporary accommodation therefore some duty of care?

Pota2 · 05/05/2021 09:41

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

If this had happened ten years ago, there wouldn't have been any distrust of the reporting.

However, the online disquiet about this terrible, tragic case is symptomatic of what happens when the press become known for publishing according to a particular rule-book.

I get that but there is absolutely no evidence that this person is male and there is a photo of her plus background, including attending an all-girls school, that strongly suggests that she is female, yet people STILL refuse to believe it.
