Males using female products

I follow Clinique on Instagram as I use their products. They have posted quite a lot recently of men using the "female" products, not the ones advertised to men. It really annoys me for a few reasons:
Can we not have our own products any more?
Are the men products actually then the same as the women's ones anyway, so it's al just a clever marketing ploy and it's all the same stuff.

Very useful link Cwenthryth!

Just answered my own question on disposing of safety razor blades - you can collect them in a tin and recycle them

www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/blog/dispose-recycle-razor-blades/

Also sold!

ForThePurposeOfTheTape · 03/05/2021 21:54

I don't mind companies using men in their makeup advertising or whatever. The rise of male makeup influencers was always going to lead to companies trying to make money from new markets.

Unless it's a female specific product like tampons, I don't see why a shampoo, lipstick or moisturiser would be female. The only possible exception to this might be the scent but non-scented cosmetics are often more popular since it's a potential allergic reaction ingredient.

Deliriumoftheendless · 03/05/2021 21:48

I’d never thought of a traditional razor - I’m sold!

Cwenthryth · 03/05/2021 21:40

OP please don’t just run away though, you probably feel piled on given that no one agrees with you. Maybe we could move the conversation on a bit. Why did you feel this was a feminist issue in the first place?

Thanks PPs for the plastic-free safety razor recommendations! How do you dispose of the used razor blades safely though (if you don’t have a medical sharps container to hand?)

themalamander · 03/05/2021 21:35

You realise that most feminists want to stop the gendered product nonsense. And you're fighting because you want us to have our own special, little girlie section? Really?

TuvoknotSpock · 03/05/2021 21:32

I've seen the ads you refer to and am fine with them. Eyeshadow applies successfully to eyelids of both sexes, if we normalised men being "allowed" to look fabulous with a smoky eye that would be better for Males and females imo.

CorianderBee · 03/05/2021 21:32

It's a good thing if men want to use 'female' branded choices. It means there's less toxic masculinity in their brains stopping them.

And our skincare is way better. DP uses skincare which I usually guide him on which is either unisex or female-oriented.

Doyoumind · 03/05/2021 21:25

I don't get why it matters. They only produce stuff for men because many men won't buy anything aimed at women. Let men use women's skincare, makeup, whatever. As long as they know it doesn't mean they're a woman it makes no difference.

@LadyBuffOfBuffdonia

Are men's razors actually any good? I've never got one unless you count the 19p cheap orange ones.

I'm in the market for a reusable, eco friendly one I can use without shaving foam.

My preferred razor is the classic Bic single blade. Periodically I’ll go through a period of using an electric shaver, but won’t get a smooth shave.

If I’m stubbled up then I’ll use a two or three of the cheaper own brand razors to shift it.

All the high tech multi bladed razors are a waste of money for me - I blunt the blades and if I’ve gone stubbled they just make a mess - the ‘best a man can get’ shredded my face.

For a reusable razor, with minimal disposables then I’d personally think the best is the old fashioned screw together ‘safety razor’ with good quality blades.
I did have my dads old army issue razor once upon a time
(When I last bought these types of blades you could slide the used blades into the bottom of the dispenser so they aren’t sat in the bin waiting to cut someone)

Where'd you get the wooden handle and the blades that fit please?

Athinginitself · 03/05/2021 21:18

Really couldnt care less, actually pretty pleased me and dp use the same shower gel, shampoo and conditioner saves a lot of plastic in the bathroom.

Prisons? Yes, women need their own.
Sports? Yes, women need their own.
Refuges? Yes, women need their own.

Clinique beauty products? Erm, not so much.

Like a PP said, 'Can we not have our own products any more?' really is not a hill I would choose to die on!

StrangeLookingParasite · 03/05/2021 21:13

Very much could not care less about this. In fact I think it's a good thing.

Tibtom · 03/05/2021 21:13

there should not be boy's toys etc

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 03/05/2021 21:13

Are they as good as Venus?

Tibtom · 03/05/2021 21:12

I don't believe in gender and that includes gendered products such as toys or children's cloths or beauty products. They should be boy's toys/girl's toys/men's moisterisers (that is not to say I disagree with having a range of scents to choose from). Where sex matters then it is necessary to have those things eg period products, cut of cloths to fit the male or female shape, safety equipment, medication doses. Strangely where sex matters it seem almost less likely for there to be products for women then when gender is being forced on us.

Deliriumoftheendless · 03/05/2021 21:11

This isn't the hill to die or indeed dye on!

🤣

CorvusPurpureus · 03/05/2021 21:09

Oh yes & razors! I shave my legs sometimes, when I can be bothered.

The razor has never, ever, needed to be pink or called after a goddess in order for it to lawnmower my hairy legs.

It's all just absolute marketing bollocks. If you want a product to make your eyelids look sparkly, your hair shiny &/or green & mauve, or your legs less hairy - the product is unlikely to be calculating your chromosomes & going rogue on you if they don't match up with the ones the marketing dept decided to sell to.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 03/05/2021 21:08

My dh, ds and dd all have a Shavekit handle and just the same blades. I get gruum stuff that everyone dives into (leaving me my old lady creams)
Terminallysleepdeprived · 03/05/2021 21:08

Really? Do people seriously have nothing better to moan about than men using "women's" products and vice versa???

I use "men's" shaving gel and a "men's" Gillette razor as i have ridiculously coarse hair on my legs and underarms and I get a closer shave with them. Dp will often use my deodorant if he can't find his or has forgotten to tell me he has run out.

As with pp I often pinch his bulldog shaving creme or his body shop one as I find I get less razor rash and less ingrown hairs from it.

MarjorieBouvier · 03/05/2021 21:06

I buy the teen DS female non-scented deodorant because he has a very sensitive sense of smell and cannot stand mens deodorant. Is that a problem?

I'd be quite happy for toiletries and make up/hair products to be gender neutral.
