Actually jaw dropped at this.

I'm not going to vote for them, because I no longer want independence, but it's bloody amazing to see women's rights and needs set out so clearly.

ForWomenScotland have done a brief precis of the major parties' stands on women's rights:

One or two Tories have distinguished themselves by talking very openly and sensibly on the matter, Midsomer. But on the whole, I don't really count 'women's rights' as a central Tory policy.

Did that Labour candidate not get bumped after the KKK/feminists meme?

Oh, politics is generally cynical as fuck, I agree! I don't trust any political messages more than about ten minutes into the future, sadly.

These things needed saying, out loud, clearly. The vast majority of people would agree with them, I would think. It's like the gap in scientific evidence, showing that there are only two sexes - up until recently nobody had even thought to question such an obvious truth.

But here we are.

The 'only us' comment is completely accurate, unfortunately. Unless there's another party in Scotland standing up unequivocally for women's rights?

What is the Tories’ stance on this? I’m genuinely not sure, but I agree they haven’t said anything as clear as the Alba video (it’s just insane that hearing politicians actually say “sex-based rights” makes me gasp in a sort-of “are they allowed to say that?” way).

And Scottish Labour seemed to say something positive last week on this, but then they also have individual candidates whose contribution to the debate is to retweet KKK memes, so it doesn’t really wash.

MissBarbary · 02/05/2021 12:13

I know no one cares about this but the idea of voting for a party headed by Salmond because it is championing women’s rights is laughable.

Ahmed-Sheikh , the ex - solicitor who failed to appreciate you don't use client's money to prop up your failing business, is facing another Law Society investigation into her conduct

And then there's their economic expert who thinks it's appropriate to call Sturgeon a bitch.

YankeeDad · 02/05/2021 12:13

I agree with absolutely everything in the video.

It is, however, worth noting that women's rights don't actually appear to be the main priority for this party.

Alba’s stated aims:
National Independence for Scotland as an immediate necessity, and overwhelming priority, achieved by democratic means through a vote of people resident in Scotland.
The promotion of all Scottish interests, and the building of an economically successful and socially-just independent country, through the pursuit of a social-democratic programme.
The acceptance by the Scottish people of a written constitution for the newly independent country; defending the rights, liberties and equality of all citizens before the law.

Undersnatch · 02/05/2021 12:13

Agree, if a party I trusted popped up with this agenda then I’d be delighted!

Undersnatch · 02/05/2021 12:12

I know it’s true Arabella, but just the way it was said - I can imagine them all behind the scenes saying ‘so what have we got that the SNP doesnt?’ It just feels cynical to me and I don’t believe that women’s sex based rights are a major priority for this party. If it helps get the ideas in to more people’s minds though, that’s a positive I guess.

3peassuit · 02/05/2021 12:11

Wow. Labour should take note if it wants to win this woman back.

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2021 12:04

The 'only us' comment is completely accurate, unfortunately. Unless there's another party in Scotland standing up unequivocally for women's rights? I haven't seen one so far. Would be nice, of course.

I'm no great fan of Salmond, based on his political history (handing an SSSI to Donald Trump for a golf course, in particular). WRT sexual harassment - he was acquitted of all charges, despite the best efforts of some very powerful people.

ALBAs primary concern is independence, women's rights is not the overarching founding principle.

Anyway, I'm not voting for them - just amazed at the forthright video!

Undersnatch · 02/05/2021 11:51

Hmmm. I get your appreciation of the issues being named out loud but the ‘only us’ comment - feels like a cynical attempt to move into a space they know the snp have boldly left vacant. Just feels all a bit ironic when their leader has been accused by several women of breaching their sex based rights. What do these women in the film think of that? I know he wasn’t convicted but I personally think the sleaze oozes out of him, and if he/the party genuinely cared about equality and women’s rights, then why didn’t they choose a woman as leader?

persistentwoman · 02/05/2021 11:41

Fantastic video. Yet chilling that this is something that the Labour party, Lib Dems and Greens would not support . Fuckwits.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 02/05/2021 11:34

@ArabellaScott

Well, the pro-indy parties want indie above all else, remember.
Yes of course, I understand that’s their priority but still jarred Smile

Brilliant!
I dearly wish I could vote for them but I don’t want my vote used as a “mandate” for another bloody referendum.
Bit jarring to see vote SNP first vote - I understand why but the SNP are so very opposed to women having even the right to name ourselves Angry

YouSetTheTone · 02/05/2021 11:11

Reported my post in case there was too much personal information in there!

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2021 11:05

@Diaryofamadwoman

I was thinking of voting Wightman. I'd really like to. But it'll have to be Alba after seeing that.

I'm apoplectic that I have to set everything else aside to focus purely on defending the existing rights of women. This is 2021

Yes, indeed. Fighting for our most basic rights of all - the rights to name ourselves, define ourselves, and uphold existing law.

It's hardly revolutionary, yet ...

What brave and determined women. Fantastic video.

Changemusthappen · 02/05/2021 10:59

All women should watch this, bumpity bump....

Fantastic, wish I could vote for them! Why are the women in English politics so afraid to stand up and say this simple message? It’s pathetic.

weebarra · 02/05/2021 10:48

Great. I was going to give Alba my list vote for this reason, but this has cemented my view.
Still don't have a clue who my main vote will go to. I am pro independence but I cannot stomach voting for the SNP because of their attitude to women.

ArabellaScott · 02/05/2021 10:48

I also appreciated that there were subtitles on that.

Fit, quine, could ye nae fathom fit the wifies were takkin aboot? Wink

Scotland got over the witch hunts some time ago, no?
