In fairness to CJ, I remember her saying this over a year ago, before the legislation being pushed through in Republican states. I assumed she had changed her mind as I hadn't heard anything else from her on the topic since.

Also in fairness, California is not Alabama, and taking a hard-right position on social issues is not going to be politically advantageous, even for a Republican.

She may still change her tune, of course. Doubt she has JKR's strength of character.

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

Fantastic reply though: "Ahhhh so it IS a ladder... all along we were told it was a step down into oppression".
Yes. Wonderful reply!
WarriorN · 02/05/2021 08:30

I’m with NiceGerbil on this. This is politically motivated and has nothing to do with CJ believing in the rights of women and girls to fair competition.

I don't think Jenner had any other option tbh. Sport is Jenner's thing. Republicans want sport kept single sex. But I genuinely can't believe they would personally think otherwise too, given their own sports past.

The whole dressy ups stuff = woman is separate, baring in mind how many famous women succeed professionally just being a female stereotype. They think they're on a level playing field there.

UhtredRagnarson · 02/05/2021 08:29

I don't think we should forget who CJ REALLY is.

Absolutely this.

NecessaryScene1 · 02/05/2021 08:28

No, that's unfair in the other direction. Those are not mutually exclusive.

Clearly political motivation means Jenner is not inclined to discount fair competition as Democrats do, but you can't just say it's totally politically motivated.

I think it's more common for political motivation to suppress true beliefs than to expound false ones.

WarriorN · 02/05/2021 08:26

Yea good points hamster.

Is it "fair" to receive an award for women, for becoming an embodiment of sexist female stereotypes, when women compete against and battle sexism and sexist stereotypes daily?

HamsterV2 · 02/05/2021 08:23

Apologies @MNHQ, I didn't mean to misgender CJ.

CJ tried on his - please feel free to change to "their"

NecessaryScene1 · 02/05/2021 08:22

I don't think we should forget who CJ REALLY is.

Thank you, Hamster. It was getting a bit cloying.

which, although CJ was nominated for, CJ didn't have to accept.

This I think gets to the nub of it. Even if institutions are prepared to let you be a dick, that doesn't excuse you from being a dick.

HamsterV2 · 02/05/2021 08:21

I'm conflicted about CJ.

CJ is obviously right about transwomen/girls in womens' sports. It's an absolute no brainer.

However, CJ also made a big thing about using the women's toilets in one of Trump's edifeces? CJ even FILMED it

CJ also won the 2015 Glamour "Woman of the year" award, which, although CJ was nominated for, CJ didn't have to accept.

There was THIS where CJ admitted on camera that CJ tried on his 10 year old daughter's clothes - referring to them as "little daughters".

Call me cynical, but I think CJ's only motivation for this is political clout - knowing how much CJ supports Trump and the Republican party. On CJ's past track record (excuse the pun), I don't actually think CJ supports women as CJ has demonstrated on numerous occasions.

I don't think we should forget who CJ REALLY is.

@EdwinPootsLovesArchaeology

My fairly woke son had already 'done a Jenner' over sports, after learning about Fallon Fox.
Fallon is a terrific campaigner for keeping women’s sports single sex, despite Fallon ostensibly opposing that Grin
NecessaryScene1 · 02/05/2021 08:16

Of course they’re all shouting about “the evidence” that transwomen/trans girls have no advantage,

This transwoman won a gold medal in the men's decathlon.

I'd say that refutes that quite strongly. Wink

Man, what a woman.

@hm246

Not seen one tweet mention about trans boys competing in boys sports only trans girls in girls......wonder why 🤔
Exactly, it's always the agenda the trans girls should compete because they know full well they will win. As they have an advantage, in sports it should be never be allowed. If they want a separate category for trans athletes then fair enough but they never seem to want to compete just against other trans individuals. I'm glad CJ has said this being trans.
DaisiesandButtercups · 02/05/2021 08:12

This really highlights for me that not all trans identifying people think the same way or believe in gender identity ideology as promoted by organisations claiming to represent them. We knew that of course, we know of others who are free thinking and trans. It just makes it even more obvious that there is something akin to a religious belief or authoritarian political dogma in gender identity ideology which is entirely irrelevant to simply offering the same respect and dignity to trans individuals that would be accorded to all other individuals in society. Gender identity ideology is about privileging trans as a group in society rather than finding a balance of meeting essential needs of all groups.

Caitlyn Jenner is a strong enough individual in a strong position. Caitlyn is unlikely to care about attacks from gender ideology extremists. I don’t believe Caitlyn is the cowardly or fearful sort who will apologise and publicly proclaim that the orthodox gender identity ideology line is the one true way.

BilboBercow · 02/05/2021 08:09

@WarriorN

Does anyone who used she and would usually use they have a reason? I wonder if it's conscious or subconscious?

I never use she now here. I have on twitter for Fionne and Seven as they've been respectful to women's causes and it's a conscious decision to do so, not as it would ban me but for them.

I tend to use they but will occasionally use she, mainly because I'm of the opinion that i call people what they want to be called because I'm polite, but I can't be forced to believe someone is ACTUALLY a woman and nor should they be treated as an actual woman for the purposes of sex based rights.
sunshineandhappy · 02/05/2021 08:05

@Overdueanamechange

Surprised to have a new found respect for CJ, after thinking she was just another silly Kardashian. She is speaking as an ex athlete and a father to daughters, and is actually saying what most men I know are saying. Good for her.
I agree 😊
CaveMum · 02/05/2021 08:04

I’m disappointed by the number of US Celebs that are retweeting comments by prominent US TRAs calling out CJ on this.

Of course they’re all shouting about “the evidence” that transwomen/trans girls have no advantage, without being able to produce any of it.

DickKerrLadies · 02/05/2021 08:03

@PaleBlueMoonlight

Interesting how the BBC headline says this “Caitlyn Jenner opposes trans girls in women's sports as unfair” rather than the disingenuous opposes trans girls playing sport that you would usually see.
Wow - turns out the BBC do know how to write an accurate headline!

I'm now hopeful that in the future the BBC will no longer write headlines that describe this story in an inaccurate way and will point out that no, transpeople are not being banned from all sports.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 02/05/2021 08:00

This is nothing to do with CJ being an athlete and recognising the inherent unfairness of men in women’s sports, and everything about appealing to a Republican voter demographic, and probably attracting the more social conservative Latino population into the bargain.

RebeccaCloud9 · 02/05/2021 07:59

Twitter is hilarious (but scary). Armies of TRAs losing their shit because someone has made a comment supporting women and girls. It boggles my mind how they cannot see the other physical differences between men and women beyond hormones.

[quote Itwasjustresting]Interesting tweet from the Guardian’s Digital Editor - I wonder if he will get the same treatment as Suzanne Moore....

I think, sadly, we know the answer to that.

Jonathan will keep his job. CJ will not be cancelled.

And yes, if CJ can win the olympics as a woman competing in the men’s events, then there’s obviously nothing that transwomen can’t do if they put their backs into it! Come on ladies!

Kotatsu · 02/05/2021 07:49

Caitlyn Jenner is living proof that transwomen can compete in male sports. And win.

Exactly this. They clearly just aren't trying hard enough if they can't (as girls have been told often enough).
