From the Telegraph. the last para make you want to weep -

A Newcastle University spokesman said: "We want our campus to be a welcoming and safe place for everyone who studies, works or visits here, regardless of gender, race, class, age or disability."

But it would seem they are not bothered about making people feel welcome regardless of sex, as they don't even mention it.

Conscious of all those reading this thread but not commenting and who are anxious about returning to work study at some of the universities mentioned. Particularly if your uni's guidance talks about gender but not sex (the actual protected characteristic) then you could complain. If you daren't maybe get a relative with s different surname/address to complain?

Consider approaching Counterweight for help and advice.

counterweightsupport.com/

If the university is based in Scotland, you can raise a complaint / your concerns with the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman (and this doc is an interesting piece of evidence for those at Edinburgh www.spso.org.uk/college-or-university-complaints .

www.spso.org.uk/college-or-university-complaints

And for English universities there is the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education

www.oiahe.org.uk/

You will usually be expected to raise the issue with the institution first.

@Butitwasherdrieway, does your question "Are they?" refer to "female students are being raped at universities at an alarming rate" or "Newcastle University [being] more interested in thought policing women rather than dealing with actual harm to them"?

Because if it's the first, I suggest you start by reading the House of Commons briefing paper Number 08117, 30 April 2021, 'Sexual harassment in education' commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8117/ and the report it refers to on page 16 in the paragraph "A 2020 report, Unsafe Spaces. Ending Sexual Abuse in Universities, estimated that at least 50,000 students are sexually abused at universities in England and Wales every year."

@Erikrie

In other words, the statement that it's happening in alarming number is simply not true

It doesn't matter to me whether you believe it or not. Your education is your own responsibility. If you were interested you would research it yourself. Your words demonstrate to me that you're not actually interested anyway.

No, I'm asking you to justify a bold, nonsensical claim that spreads fear and takes focus away from real victims.

You can't, which tells me all I need to know.

Women are not being raped in alarming rates in universities. That is a lie.

@WarriorN

This will go down like a cup of cold sick at Newcastle medical and dental school.
Unfortunately my old Newcastle University school - one of the quadrangle ones - are unlikely to object to this bloody awful nonsense.

I will email the Prof I know best though and test the waters.

Butwasitherdriveway · 02/05/2021 11:00

@Erikrie

Where? How many?

Google it if you want to know. There's plenty out there. It's not my role to gather the evidence for you and lay it at your feet for your inspection.

I can’t believe that bit about a trans person going on a residential trip being asked to choose who to undress in front of or with whom they would like to share a room. Is the person they pick allowed to say no thank you? Or is that a micro-aggression?!

And as for the lanyards... Poor men if they are forced to wear some “female friendly” badge as if they are a garage clumsily trying to attract women customers. It just makes normal men awkward and doesn’t in any way weed out dodgy or downright dangerous ones.

Reminds me as well when someone asked me to put a charity poster in my window saying “I’m against child cruelty” Confused. I thought it went without saying! I politely declined as it would make my house look like the witch’s cottage from Hansel &Gretel.

@IloveJKRowling

So, women who are scared of being raped are no longer allowed to engage in 'avoidant behaviour' when in an enclosed space with someone bigger, if they identify as trans?

That is chilling.

And yes, female students are being raped at universities at an alarming rate and that's before you even get to sexual harassment, but seemingly Newcastle University are more interested in thought policing women rather than dealing with actual harm to them.

Are they?
IloveJKRowling · 02/05/2021 10:03

The 'avoidant behaviour' thing is really, really frightening. Rape culture.

Gender vague, brilliant. If that’s a thing, then all GC people who don’t subscribe to having a “gender identity” are gender vague and therefore trans, according to the ideology. Therefore no one is allowed to avoid us either.

I am glad we are fighting back however - women won the census case (court required the guidance notes to be changed as to what proves your sex (not your gender)) and now my regulator is going to publish sex not just gender figures.

Given the UK's Equality Act 2010 prohibits sex discrimination as much as gender discrimination that is just as well - particularly as about 33m people are female as to their gender in the UK which is an awful lot of us compared to numbers of trans people (for whom I have much sympathy - I have no problems with them at all but they do seem to be doing women down)

NiceGerbil · 02/05/2021 05:15

My read of this is that now it's been accepted by NHS etc that women must not talk about their biology and how it affects them as female humans,

Now it moves onto not taking about our experiences when we were young/ through puberty etc.

So we aren't allowed to talk about our bodies and we aren't allowed to talk about our feelings at points that says tricky for lots of girls.

The creep of this, the pushing is amazing to see. Once one thing is done it's so fast to the next.

EG woman/ girl. Then female. Gender. Then sex.

Eg gender assigned at birth, sex and gender are different, gender assigned is wrong.
Now it's sex assigned at birth, assigned female incorrectly at birth.

And the media and orgs and police etc are lapping it up.

NiceGerbil · 02/05/2021 05:07

Agender is definitely under the trans umbrella.

Funny how it's all about respecting how people identity unless you're a middle aged woman/ a woman with the 'wrong' views. And then you get told what you are.

Same old same old.

GreyhoundG1rl · 02/05/2021 01:33

I said the same thing to someone who was trying to educate me about gender and gender identity. She told me I was either gender vague or agender, so apparently also part of the trans community! grin

I regularly engage in avoidant behaviour. I’ve been physically attacked and verbally bullied by men and women in the past and it’s made me very fearful and anxious about my personal safety. If I enter an enclosed space with a stranger who’s bigger than me I feel anxious and often need to leave. If I encounter someone who’s dressed similar to my previous attackers I feel afraid and I run away, even in broad daylight. If it’s dark or an isolated place I will run away from anyone who approaches me, male or female. I don’t appreciate being told that I have to remain in a situation that’s making me anxious otherwise it’s a micro aggression.

Gingerkittykat · 02/05/2021 01:17

@MrGHardy

At least trans people have a gender identity. Gender identity is obviously so crucial to humans and I don't even have one, nevermind cis or trans. Surely I am the most oppressed of them all.

Enough4me · 02/05/2021 00:56

This in the list of demands worried me...

Birth certificates are not just a violence against trans people, they are a material to the state’s oppression of “undocumented” immigrants and asylum seekers.

Thus undocumented people can come and go as they please as birth certificates scrapped, if it makes trans lives easier.

Erikrie · 02/05/2021 00:09

Rose of Dawn has been keeping an eye on this, and you get occasional updates, but basically it's gone down the memory hole

Yes I didn't think I'd heard anything from Rose on that one for a while. She certainly was chasing it for some time.

Erikrie · 02/05/2021 00:07

Which apparently non LGBT Mermaids employee Helen Islan used to bring a court case for transphobic hate crime against transsexual Miranda Yardley, according to Miranda

Well if they represented Helen they weren't very successful on that occasion that's for sure.
