From the Telegraph. the last para make you want to weep -

A Newcastle University spokesman said: "We want our campus to be a welcoming and safe place for everyone who studies, works or visits here, regardless of gender, race, class, age or disability."

But it would seem they are not bothered about making people feel welcome regardless of sex, as they don't even mention it.

Tuesday even!

NiceGerbil · 02/05/2021 14:48

Ah I'm English. I work with a man from near Edinburgh so can ask him what he thinks it means on Monday.

Could well be different. No idea.

Yes, thank you for finding this @CatherinaJTV
I have been reading it but haven’t finished it. In my opinion the start at least is written with more sensitivity and nuance than the equivalent information at Newcastle.

But looking at this phrase, for example -

“Some people express concerns that recognising the rights of trans women will negatively impact the ‘sex-based’ rights of cis women and that predatory men will exploit the proposed right to self-declaration to access women-only spaces or to gain advantage in sports and the workplace. This effectively makes trans women the focus of blame for the actions of predatory men.”

Is it not confused to state that, “This effectively makes trans women the focus of blame for the actions of predatory men.”

Should this not be, “This makes the few trans women who happen to be predatory a reason for focussing blame on all trans women”...it could then go on to explain that there are few trans women who are actually predatory (if that is the fact).

Of course it also misses the point that trans women may already have gained advantages by their previous lives as men ( socially and physically) and that women feel trans women should not compete in sports with women because of the physical danger to women this would cause, and the unfair competitive advantages this would set up, due to trans women’s originally male bodies.

It also misses the point that non predatory trans men also pose a perceived threat to some previously abused women and girls ( of whom there are a great many) who want the right to private spaces, or women whose religious practice demands privacy.

There is also no mention that women, quite understandably, do not think it is right that crimes committed by trans women should be classified, or reported, as having been committed by women.

Not that we have any stats on these 'microaggressions' ...

Sophoclesthefox · 02/05/2021 14:20

I’m Scottish and I’ve only ever heard chinned used to mean hit.

And I find the rape stats posted upthread alarming, and can’t understand why that would be a topic of contention. They’re alarming because they’re so high. If they were lower, I wouldn’t be alarmed.

are you spoiling for a fight, driveway?

Anyway, back to the topic. What do you think of the guidance on micro aggressions?

NiceGerbil · 02/05/2021 14:19

Not read any of the thread since last night and just saw 'chinned means' -round here means punching someone.

Now going to see what the context is!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/05/2021 14:18

""The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) year ending March 2020 estimated 2.9% of women (618,000) and 0.7% of men (155,000) aged 16 to 74 years experienced sexual assault (including attempts) in the last year."

These are the government stats. Sexual assault is sexual assault. Soinds like you are splitting hairs.

Butwasitherdriveway · 02/05/2021 14:13

@Erikrie

Women are being raped and sexually assaulted in universities at alarming numbers. It also happens in schools. Facts are facts.
Also not sure you said sexual assault the first time but just rape. Happy to be corrected.

@YetAnotherSpartacus

But women are being sexually assaulted in alarming numbers, including at universities.

Surely there is no rape/sexual assault denial going on here?

No

But harassment, misogny and rape isn't the same as an alarming number of rapes specifically at universities.

Apar from anything else, neither night life or unis are open which I'm sure you wouldn't disagree take the numbers up.

Can we stop derailing now?

Butwasitherdriveway · 02/05/2021 14:09

@YetAnotherSpartacus

The definition of 'chinned' as I understand it.
Are you planning on continuing to suggest I threatened violence even though I've explained what chinned means in Scotland until I get deleted ? Or can we all move on with our day?

Butwasitherdriveway · 02/05/2021 14:04

@YetAnotherSpartacus

Are you actually saying those stats are untrue?

Really?

No.

I'm saying that's not the same as the blanket statement made earlier upthread that women are being raped at an alarming level at universities.

I mean, apart from the obvious fact that this is happening in less numbers than ever in current circumstances.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/05/2021 14:02

Butwasitherdriveway · 02/05/2021 13:59

@EmpressWitchDoesntBurn not necessarily but preferable to the PP who decided I was a man threatening to assault women for having an opinion Blush

Butwasitherdriveway · 02/05/2021 13:58

@YetAnotherSpartacus

It always terrifies me when women who draw attention to violence against women are called liars.

Again.

"The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) year ending March 2020 estimated 2.9% of women (618,000) and 0.7% of men (155,000) aged 16 to 74 years experienced sexual assault (including attempts) in the last year."

Mmm.
EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 02/05/2021 13:57

@YetAnotherSpartacus

"Chinned" is indeed an odd expression. As far as I know, it means an actual assault.
Chinny reckon means ‘yeah right...’ so I’d guess it comes from that.
Butwasitherdriveway · 02/05/2021 13:57

@GreyhoundG1rl

Who was talking to you Butwasitherdriveway? What is the matter with you?
You were.
Butwasitherdriveway · 02/05/2021 13:56

@YetAnotherSpartacus

I've also never heard a woman use this expression. Ever.
How many Scottish women do you know?

It doesn't mean an actual assault. It means told.off, pulled.up, corrected.

Lots of leaping going on from people who don't actually know.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/05/2021 13:51

“SmokedDuck
I find myself wondering, if we looked today at all the investments of the university, and all the investments and business connections of the governors and donors, and all the pension plans of the staff, how much dirty money might we find today? And to what extent could we avoid that kind of connection without completely cutting ourselves off from the worldwide economy? And to what extent do we think the university is morally culpable for that, or people in the university?

It's interesting to me that in this specific instance, and I think in many others where similar projects are going on, there is a lot less sense that we need to take responsibility and be culpable for the current stuff than the things that happened safely in the past.“

I agree. How can we b so smug as to not realise that in years to come we will be horrified by aspects of what is now considered normal behaviour.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/05/2021 13:20

You've got a lot to say for someone who was chinned for being on the wind up all day yesterday..

I'm not wilfully misunderstanding anything . I'm pointing out the lies.

And I have been to uni. Twice as it happens.

And there certainly wasn't an alarming number of rapes.

What an odd post. Chinned? Eh?

How do you know how many women were raped during your time as a student? Do you at least accept that rape and sexual assault complaints rarely result in a conviction? Many incidents are never reported to the police and of those that are a substantial number never make it the courts. The %age that do proceed to trial and result in a conviction is very low indeed, especially for young men under 24.

www.theguardian.com/society/2018/sep/23/revealed-less-than-a-third-of-young-men-prosecuted-for-are-convicted Some stats in this 2018 Guardian article.

... less than a third of prosecutions brought against young men result in a conviction.

According to statistics, men aged 18 to 24 in England and Wales are consistently less likely to be found guilty than older men on trial. Young men accounted for more than a quarter of defendants in rape-only cases in the five years to 2017-18...

Figures from the CPS show that just over half reports of rape resulted in a charge in 2016-17. Of the cases that were prosecuted, 42% did not result in a conviction.

According to figures published by the ONS in February, women counted for 88% of rape offences recorded by the police in the previous year.
