Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The reach of speaking up. The ripple effect.

Today I spoke up about something pertaining to the protection of women's sex based rights. I estimate the reach of this to be educating approx. 10 people almost immediately and very directly; in due course, to affect the training of around 80 staff in a way that will positively affect sex based rights; and after that have a lesser, but still measurable impact on up to 1500 further individuals within an organisation.

This is before any of those people then take the knowledge into other areas of their lives.

It feels good.

It would be great if anyone else wants to add their version of the reach of their feminist actions.

And, it's not just a numbers game. If just one woman is helped (saved?) by our words and actions, then that's amazing.

I'm delighted to see the ripple effect of the Census/ONS ruling - SRA alters survey to include sex

Please remember that Labour is a members-led party: if you feel strongly about this join and campaign from within! Hold office if you can. Be the change you wish to see!

I’ve emailed my head of diversity about sex based vs gender based spaces/sports/groups etc. She assured me that sex does not mean gender identity and sex based rights are not affected but attached two articles ( that I could read to educate myself) and they completely contradicted that! There’s been some concern about girls in school locally so I will try to use that traction to have another swing.

I took our LGBTI diversity survey to bits (do you believe there are more than two genders (male/female?) etc)

Our local mp was canvassing on the street and she seemed very ‘be kind’ but I asked her the staniland question and she did look visibly taken aback so I don’t think anyone had ever put it in those terms.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 30/04/2021 08:58

I’ve been talking quietly to our head of HR & also making use of our anonymous feedback system. They were pretty shocked by what I told them about Stonewall.

NoraEphronsNeck · 30/04/2021 08:45

I've been making appointments to speak to senior managers individually in my company. Two (male) managers were all about 'be kind', 'can't tar everyone with same brush '. Two female managers shared my concerns but only off the record Hmm.

I have two more meetings to go, one with the head of our equality forum and the other with head of diversity & inclusion - both women - but I'm approaching those meetings with a bit more caution as I haven't met them before.

I just don't feel these things can be left unsaid anymore.

MsFogi · 29/04/2021 20:48

Good point OP! I am a school governor so make sure I check every policy for sex/gender etc, I also do the same with policies at work, I also talk to anyone who will listen to me (if they disagree no one has dared to say so yet Grin).
@Mulletsaremisunderstood Posy Parker? She's amazing! Glad to hear I'm not alone in experiencing this. They actually told me that sex is not binary and that anyone can be what they want to be. They'd not heard of transgender cheats in sports or of women getting raped in prisons by other "women." Thanks for the support.
Yeah, love Posy!! She's the angry woman I wish I had the guts to be Grin

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 29/04/2021 20:47

On the speaking up, I haven't been as brave as some of you, but I have emailed some of my local TDs (haven't gotten any decent responses yet). And contributing to crowdfunders when I can.

I am talking to people in real life about it, which seems very effective.
Most people haven't a clue about what's going on and are shocked. It's refreshing to have reasonable conversations about this, if you only looked on twitter you'd think the world had gone mad.

I also emailed our prison service to ask how many people with gender recognition certificates were in the female prison. They responded with some nonsense about having to house someone according to their legal gender, and directed me to the general population numbers, which is no help.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 29/04/2021 20:46

I’ve been posting GC content on my social media for years & every so often, there’s a like or an appreciative comment from someone who’s hearing about it for the first time.

Also 'feminism is for everyone'....eh, no - feminism is for women. End of. We shouldn't have to apologise for that.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 29/04/2021 20:40

@Zimniy

I've started speaking up. I've reached a few people, written some emails and was feeling pretty confident that I was making a difference. Then today happened. I went to a feminist group meeting and it was awful, just awful. I raised by concerns about identity politics and transgender women having access to single sex spaces. I was on the receiving end of several looks of disgust and have been told that in their group feminism is for everyone and that it's all inclusive and anyone can be a woman if that's how they feel. I feel so miserable now and alone. Hopefully I reached someone there and sowed a seed of doubt.
I'm sorry, that sounds awful. Reminds me of the story Posy told about going to the feminist meeting a few years ago where she got the same treatment. Madness!

Unfortunately this is nouveau-feminism where prioritising penis havers seems to be the whole agenda.

They clap themselves on the back at how progressive they are.

Inclusion my ar$e Angry

Zimniy · 29/04/2021 20:29

@Skyliner001 - do you agree with them? That women can have a penis and be allowed in single sex spaces? Or were you being sarcastic? I can't tell.

TinaBarrow · 29/04/2021 20:24

This thread is uplifting, thanks to all

This group sounds great, well done them 😊
AmandaHoldensLips · 29/04/2021 20:22

I find the hairdressers an excellent place to kick off a conversation. So many women have absolutely no idea about the attempted destruction of our hard-won sex-based rights. Once they get the gist of what's going on it's amazing to watch the rage unfold.

Im gutted I live in the arse end of nowhere, in a safe seat.

Sigh

DodoPatrol · 29/04/2021 20:00

@MelissaVonStressel

I have also made a LibDem canvasser run away Grin
They all run away, usually after claiming never to have heard of their own policies.
TofuDelights · 29/04/2021 19:57

Oooops! I missed out the word 'canvassing' there! I don't generally bark that at the postie or delivery drivers!! Grin

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 29/04/2021 19:48

My opening question for anyone who is daft enough to knock at my door is 'do you believe a woman can have a penis?

I bet your postie breathes a sign of relief when you’re out Grin

Seriously though this thread is great, you all sound formidable!

TofuDelights · 29/04/2021 19:17

My opening question for anyone who is daft enough to knock at my door is 'do you believe a woman can have a penis?' And then I will start quoting the Equality Act.

Leafstamp · 29/04/2021 19:17

Loving these stories Smile

Well done all.

CatChant · 29/04/2021 18:56

I asked my LibDem canvasser what his definition of the word "woman" was and took it from there.

You'd think that would be fairly fundamental to the WEP, wouldn't you? Sadly not.

Good luck!
