Not many details but Sarah Phillmore has tweeted that a woman has been told to present herself to the police.

I wonder of we could travel north and be of some help.

@BrandineDelRoy

Is there a plot we could dig into?
MurrayBlackburn Mackenzie do great work on protecting women's rights, as do ForWomenScotland.

I think it's a bit too late for this Bill, although god knows everyone hopes it is repealed, quickly.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/04/2021 18:49

@ArabellaScott

It's a bill specifically designed to make those pesky women shut the fuck up isn't it?

Oh, perhaps it's coincidence that women are not covered by the Bill, surely?

Either every group should be covered, or none. Excluding women is so clearly discriminatory it would be funny, if it wasn't so offensive.
highame · 28/04/2021 18:46

Yes, agree Arabella it's how they do it. Surely this law wont hold, especially if TRA's test it and the press decide it is unfair and unjust. However, a Spartacus moment would be good.

I wonder of we could travel north and be of some help.

You see, laws like this inflame rather than help

I wish all women in Scotland would be really offensive about TRA's and get themselves called in - it would be a wonderful protest especially if they all identified as transmen

Yes. An I Am Sparticus moment

BrandineDelRoy · 28/04/2021 18:34

Is there a plot we could dig into?

RedDogsBeg · 28/04/2021 18:33

and so it begins..

MrGHardy · 28/04/2021 18:26

Does this just apply to Scottish citizens or will the Scots try to get foreign nationals who said something to Scottish nationals?

Seventrees · 28/04/2021 18:13

.

@SunsetBeetch

Oh ffs. Is anyone at all surprised that this involves a woman, a tweet and accusations of transphobia? Cause I'm not.
This was my first thought.

It's a bill specifically designed to make those pesky women shut the fuck up isn't it?

AfternoonToffee · 28/04/2021 17:58

Thank you.

PigeonPants section 21 states:
21Commencement
(1)This section and sections 17 and 22 come into force on the day after Royal Assent.
(2)The other provisions of this Act come into force on such day as the Scottish Ministers may by regulations appoint.
(3)Regulations under subsection (2) may—
(a)include transitional, transitory or saving provision,
(b)make different provision for different purposes.

So only two three sections now in force: this; 17. ancilliary provisions; and 22. short title.

PigeonPants · 28/04/2021 17:25

@AfternoonToffee

Well what a surprise.

One Tweet did say it hadn't passed through Parliament yet so isn't actually law, is that the case?

Scottish Parliament site says it went into effect on 23 April (scroll down to the bottom, expand Stage 3) - www.parliament.scot/bills-and-laws/bills/hate-crime-and-public-order-scotland-bill

One Tweet did say it hadn't passed through Parliament yet so isn't actually law, is that the case?

It received royal assent on Friday and "the other provisions of this Act come into force on such day as the Scottish Ministers may by regulations appoint." I think that means now after the election?
ArabellaScott · 28/04/2021 17:16

Patrick Harvie rumbled about charging Johann Lamont (ex head of Scottish Labour), did he not?

PronounssheRa · 28/04/2021 17:15

Not at all.

I did hear rumblings that TRAs were going to target women to test this new law.

ArabellaScott · 28/04/2021 17:14

This does look useful;

ArabellaScott · 28/04/2021 17:11

Also, fwiw, I have no desire to be offensive about anyone.

I'm afraid just stating the simple truth would probably be enough.

ArabellaScott · 28/04/2021 17:10

@highame

Well, yes, but for
  1. I'd be utterly terrified and
  2. I have dependents that mean I can't really BE arrested, there'd be nobody to look after them.

That's how these fucking laws are effective. Governed by fear and the worry of those we care for.

Well done, Scotgov. Brave new world, indeed.

Would it be more noteworthy if a slew of women in Scotland stated a material fact about sex classes or asked the Staniland Question? Something completely reasonable such that it completely baffled the public that such might be considered an offence?
UppityPuppity · 28/04/2021 16:55

Oh ffs. Is anyone at all surprised that this involves a woman, a tweet and accusations of transphobia? Cause I'm not.

Nope - entirely predictable and designed to be that way.
