Worth sharing with any detransitioners in your life.

@Clymene

The authors make it very clear that this booklet is a) based on responses to a survey of 75 detransitions and b) to counter that overwhelming narrative within the trans community *@Shizuku* that reasons for detransitioning are because of internalised transphobia or that they are only detransitioning temporarily. So either you haven't read the booklet properly or you're dismissing their voices.

Either way, it's pretty poor.

It's a beautifully produced guide - I hope it provides comfort to those people who feel that they've been pushed down a road they didn't want to go down and that connecting with others who have been in their position is healing.

" narrative within the trans community @Shizuku that reasons for detransitioning are because of internalised transphobia or that they are only detransitioning temporarily."

Those are some of the more common reasons people detransition. The biggest one as far as I know is the transphobia of other people. Why not include all the reasons and make a booklet that gives the whole picture and would be helpful to all detransitioners?

I mean it sounds rather like transphobia - wanting to avoid helping detransitioners who still see themselves as trans and might want to re-transition.

It fails to address the main cause of detransition which is essentially transphobia, and it also fails to mention re-transition which is what the majority of detransitioners do. None of the claims in the booklet are referenced with science.
This ^^ is making stuff up...

With respect Shizuku maybe you should consider writing your own publication? Perhaps some of the time you spend on here correcting women could be used to produce some evidenced literature? Just a thought.

@mollythemeerkat

I think you may be missing the reasons why some girls choose to transition in the first place *@Shizuku*. Could it possibly be that they feel oppressed by the notion of gender stereotypes which dont seem to fit them.
That could certainly happen, and should be included in any booklet about detransition. I'm saying include all the reasons - not just the ones that fit a particular narrative. Surely you agree with that?

Thanks OP, it's beautifully written, these women are inspiring

and these stories are important because they tell us what happened to them in their own words. no dogma. no lecturing. simple truth.:

"Because I didn’t see myself in
other girls, I felt like my body
was wrong. I began struggling
with depression and anxiety
and it was soon after this that
I discovered the online trans
community, who enabled my
feelings of self-hatred and led
me to believe that transitioning
was the cure to all my
problems. "

This looks really interesting. I'm so pleased to see that it's written by two women detransitioners given the shocking rise in the UK of teenage girls reaching puberty and deciding they don't want to be women any more.
The more support and information these girls get, the better. Especially from women like them who struggled with growing up as opposed to all the groups run by middle aged adults who retain all their body parts while insisting that drugs and surgery is best for children.

A booklet for detransitioners is such a great idea, and I was optimistic when I clicked on the link.

Unfortunately, it's extremely limited and somewhat misleading. It fails to address the main cause of detransition which is essentially transphobia, and it also fails to mention re-transition which is what the majority of detransitioners do. None of the claims in the booklet are referenced with science.

In a 2015 survey of nearly 28,000 people conducted by the U.S.-based National Center for Transgender Equality, 8 percent of respondents reported detransitioning, but 62 percent of those people said they only detransitioned temporarily. The most common reason for detransitioning, according to the survey, was pressure from a parent, while only 0.4 percent of respondents said they detransitioned after realizing transitioning wasn’t right for them. Unfortunately, this booklet is only for that 0.4% which leaves all the other detransitioners in the dark.

I would encourage the authors to re-write the booklet - by all means keep the examples it currently contains, but give the full picture, otherwise people will just accuse you of pedalling a particular agenda rather than trying to help detransitioners in general.

This deserves to be bumped.

That is excellent as a research document as well! It should be shared with a range of social workers, therapists and the like.
