Is this just an election ploy because they dont want to be beaten into 3rd place by Alba?

.... The party’s manifesto, launched today, also says the party will introduce new guidance to “prevent harmful stereotyping” around gender, and that it will use the Equality Act of 2010 to frame equality policies.

The focus on single-sex issues in the manifesto comes as it was revealed the party had received a complaint about a tweet by one of its candidates which depicted a women’s organisation as the equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan. ...

I wish Welsh Labour would do this. I am determined to vote for a party that respects women and so far that means conservative.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/04/2021 17:47

I had a phone call from the Scottish Labour Party this week - asking me if I knew how I was going to vote, and what topics in particular were most important to me. The chap on the end of the phone got a real earful on gender vs sex, single sex spaces, fairness for women - and he agreed with me! I suspect this was his personal view - I wasn’t kidding myself that it was official policy.

I doubt it did much good - though he did say my views would be passed on.

MichelleofzeResistance · 23/04/2021 17:39

In the article it says they are going to implement policies in line with the 2010 EA - which has been clarified as meaning the right to sex based services. Sex as in biological.

Don't believe it. I really don't. Sorry. I'm as cynical as fuck after years of all this.

It will mean single sex AND anyone can be any sex they like.

I'm willing to open the book and put a bet on it. Until I see evidence of clear, strong boundaries that any group using single sex exemptions is fully and publicly supported, I would not trust Labour any further than I can spit.

TriggerHappyNutsAreWe · 23/04/2021 14:33

@MichelleofzeResistance

Subtext: it's labelled single sex, but you can pick any sex you like.

This is flat out deceitful.

I'd respect them more if they'd just flat out own it. 'We don't care about women and their needs and feelings and the women who will self discharge and be excluded; our priority is always that some female people must lose provision and suffer so that male people can take their preferred choice of all the provisions'.

Own it you bunch of hypocrites. If you believe it, say it. Stand on it and let people vote, honestly, knowing what they're voting for.

This. Bloody well own it.

But presumably for anyone in Scotland thinking of voting Labour worth asking candidates direct?!

But I think I should have said in my OP beaten into 4th place because I think I am right in saying the Tories have more than Labour.

Have the Scottish Tories made any statement?

But “single sex” to them, means all sexes.

andyoldlabour · 23/04/2021 13:58

Politicians will do absolutely anything to get votes. Remember Nick Clegg and the tuition fee backtrack.
Labour are very well aware that they have lost a considerable number of women voters (and men such as myself) who are GC, who want to see sex based categories in sport, prisons, refuges, hospitals etc.

@Mermoose

Wasn't it ingenious of the trans movement to focus on language - make it so difficult to speak clearly and confidently about women's rights and make it taboo to clearly name men. Now nobody has a clue what any of this means, and the Labour Party are free to renege on any promises they make about women's rights.
So true, I want a like button.
ArabellaScott · 23/04/2021 10:44

'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten'

highame · 23/04/2021 10:43

Also would this mean a split with Labour, has it now become Labour Scotland?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/04/2021 09:47

But they can't. Not without changing the GRA. Because "sex" has a meaning in law. Hence the furore and toys out of pram by misogynists about the Lamont amendment.

Pants on fire.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 23/04/2021 08:33

I don’t trust them.

PotholeHellhole · 23/04/2021 00:36

What Gerbil said.

I have just read an article about the effects of cross sex hormones on transitioners health in which transwomen were referred to as transgender females and transmen were referred to as transmen.

In order to work out at any time in the article, which study participants were being discussed, i had to check the details of the medication prescribed in the prior paragraph. So transgender males had to mean transmen because it specified they were being given testosterone therapy.

NiceGerbil · 23/04/2021 00:24

For all women we know what that means.

It's been growing a while that female male are also IDs. The inroads into language continue.

So a couple of years back single sex meant what it said and woman man etc were contested.

The media politicians etc have changed their language to the new meaning (but only when it suits them which is telling). The general public on the whole do not know the meaning has changed.

That done, male female have been next in line for a while.

At this point I wouldn't assume that any politician meant it as bio sex.

IF this gets accepted then the clear definitions in law are stuffed.

And still the general public knows none of these changes are happening.

Tibtom · 22/04/2021 23:54

@Cabinfever10

It the frase "for all women " that worries me. What is a woman according to the Labour Party? I would also like to know how they intend to protect single sex spaces whilst bringing in self id🤔
I think we know what that is code for 🙄

ArabellaScott · 22/04/2021 22:18

I wonder if we can press them on what they mean by 'single sex'.

NiceGerbil · 22/04/2021 21:20

Prisons?
School facilities and clubs etc?

I expect they think sports and hosps are what the public care more about and what the tras are a bit less interested in... ?

GNCQ · 22/04/2021 21:16

FWS really are doing sterling work. (Despite working in a climate where a TW ends up comparing them to the KKK)

HPFA · 22/04/2021 20:47

It would certainly be a good idea to get clarification on what this means.

But it maybe that Labour is just responding to public pressure and that has to be good surely? Isn't that kind of what we're aiming at?

ArabellaScott · 22/04/2021 20:46

The focus on single-sex issues in the manifesto

OMFG!!!!

AND OMFG, the KKK tweet - the delightful Herbert?! Someone actually listened to a woman for once - I thought TRAs could do no wrong?

This is actually amazing.

midgedude · 22/04/2021 20:41

It's the interpretation of what GRA grants that is odd
Since the equality act says single sex is allowed when reasonable, then provided it was being properly applied there would be no worries about a lightweight gra process

In fact ideally gra would be no process at all because people shouldn't even need paperwork to be who they are

Fallingirl · 22/04/2021 20:33

“ The party also says it is committed to “demedicalising” the process of receiving a Gender Recognition Certificat...”

I think we need some clarification of whether the party believes some males may be included in “single sex” for women and girls.

As long as the GRA exists, “single sex” is practically meaningless.
