Getting your pronouns tattooed? Really quite extraordinary

I presume this photo is genuine.

This young woman (she appears to be female) was showing off that she had had they/them tattooed on her collar bones:-

pronouns tattooed

I really do wonder what led them to want to take such drastic action?

@Pota2

Wow imagine doing that and then growing up/getting a grip and realising that you have permanently altered your body for some dumb ideology that makes no sense.
There's always laser removal. Expensive and takes ages, though.
Warmduscher · 22/04/2021 15:16

You haven't been to the Museum of Barbed Wire have you? Grin

Not recently, I’ll admit. Sadly, my membership expired during lockdown Grin

@Warmduscher

The barbed wire is wrong! There should only be two spikes. One up and one down.

Even allowing for artistic licence, presumably the person getting the tattoo wanted people to know it was barbed wire. Instead of two animations doing star jumps.

Sorry that was a huge derail from the original op... The cat video is hilarious! 😂

@Ncfeminismboard - maybe @oldwomanwhoruns phrased it badly, but I get what she means. It wasn't intended (I'm sure) to minimise your experience, but in older generations eating disorders were a way to express how we felt we didn't fit in, weren't understood, were mistreated, get attention (even when we also hated the attention), were ignored and yes, absolutely in some ways to rebel... 'you can force me to eat this, but you can't force me to keep it inside me'.

I'm sure if I was that lonely teenager now and Googled 'I don't feel my family understands me, I don't feel like I fit in' etc and there was a whole community and ready-made peer group telling me that actually I was really a boy then I might well have jumped at the chance of being like my strong, sporty, much cleverer & better looking brother - especially if there had been no one to explain the nuances of how my body wouldn't actually magically become like that! I'm very glad I was a teen before the Internet existed and that I found a bunch of goth friends to 'fit in with' instead.

You're right though that eating disorders are serious and do have long reaching consequences. I think the huge difference is that if you go to the doctors they don't agree that 'yes you are really fat still and need to lose a few extra lbs, ignore what your parents tell you', whereas they do agree that 'yes you are really born in the wrong body, ignore what your parents tell you, have some nice puberty blockers and hormones and bind your breasts up, it'll be fine'.

@oldwomanwhoruns

I weep for today's girls. In my day we rebelled by getting our ears pierced (one hole only, of course) And also we rebelled by getting anorexia. (most of us recovered)

Now girls are rebelling by getting dreadful tattoos and taking irrivirsible drugs. It is so sad. :-(

This is a really inappropriate comment and incomparable. You did not 'rebel' by suffering from a serious mental illness. Maybe you refused to eat occasionally but you did not have anorexia. I had an eating disorder that I developed through no choice of my own as a young girl and I almost died more than once. I still struggle daily and have permanent damage that affects me daily, and I have been in recovery for over 7 years.

Could they not just wear a lanyard...?

That cat though!GrinGrin

MaudesMum · 21/04/2021 12:52

I'm thinking of a tattoo to celebrate a recent Big Birthday. Now considering "Woman = Adult Human Female" as part of the design.

nickymanchester · 21/04/2021 11:06

@DeclineandFall

I'm pretty GC and I'm old but I do think outrage at this makes people look like intolerant and petty. Crap tattoos don't automatically lead to irreversible drugs.

The kids are covered in rubbish tattoos these days. As long as no-one is making me tattoo my pronouns I don't give a shit.

I don't think that anyone is showing any outrage.

It seems to be more of a bemused shaking of the head than any sort of outrage.

OMG that cat! That cat knows the rule. Who is she, the cat's mother?

Nope.

Nonmaquillee · 21/04/2021 10:44

@SmokedDuck

That will be a problem if they want to change them. My daughter, 13, was at a drama camp recently where they were asked daily what their choice for pronouns were. (She is so not in need of that bs, and it turns out all theatre stuff is full of it. So now she is stuck.)

Similarly at student union meetings at my university, you have a new identity card every time because these things are apparently not that fixed.

They were asked daily?!?! OMFG. Can't believe there are adults out there who enable and reinforce this nonsense.

Thanks for that laugh.

On a similar note, this cat's reaction to the girl telling her pronouns is cosmic:

Someone on that Twitter thread, wrote
“If you watch closely, the cat seems to roll its eyes at about eight seconds.”

Given how effective “push” and “pull” on doors are, I can’t see this having the (assumed) desired effect

AnyOldPrion · 21/04/2021 09:03

@highame

I thought the sex was ambiguous. Still not sure
Ah well. If I got it wrong and they sees the thread, then them’ll probably be delighted.
Babdoc · 21/04/2021 08:50

MrGHardy, thank you so much for that cat video link! It was hilarious. What a perceptive, GC cat.

WindyPudding · 21/04/2021 08:40

I can’t agree that anorexia was/is mostly harmless - it has one of the highest mortality rates of any mental illness and can cause serious damage even if you survive.

But I do think it’s important to look at why trans identity is partly replacing it and how they seem to be driven by similar feelings.

oldwomanwhoruns · 21/04/2021 08:12

Doh spelling - irreversible irreversible ...

I agree highame. That's why I put in my OP

(she appears to be female)

Rather than just saying "This woman..."

I have met a couple of transwomen that could easily have had that same photo taken.

AnyOldPrion · 21/04/2021 06:57

Given that the sex of this person appears obvious from a shot of a small portion of anatomy, it seems unlikely that different pronouns will protect them from misogyny, but perhaps it’s the optimism of youth.

Perhaps in future it’ll be a badge of honour to have tried.
