I just came out as GC at work, to the big boss and I feel a bit sick

I have NCed for this. I have just outed myself as GC in work to the big boss (and some others cced in).

I was asked to sign off on something that I just couldn't and I said so, and explained why.

I literally feel sick. Like I have put a big fat GC target on my back. My org is totally woke. I wonder how many times my response has been forwarded already.

There needs to be a name for that feeling you have when you are waiting, having said something you think to be true and you know to be a principled position, expecting to be accused of blasphemy and bigotry. Possibly by people who have known you for many years.

There isn't any other feeling quite like it.

MarySanderson · 15/04/2021 13:48

When I googled, it suggested that you are Gemma Collins and of good character.

museumum · 15/04/2021 13:48

Well done. I struggle often in my area of work as I know myself to be very supportive of the rights and lives of trans people but I am also critical of organisations and policies that forget about sex discrimination and inadvertently trample on women's sex-based rights along the way of trying to be inclusive. In the area I work it would be VERY hard to explain this without being shouted down as hateful and bigoted.

AntennaReborn · 15/04/2021 13:47

Well done OP.

My organization is definitely going woke but I haven't plucked up the courage to do what you did yet.

DoNotFeedTheTrolls · 15/04/2021 13:45

Flowers24 GC stands for Gender Critical

Typically it is someone who sees gender stereotypes as problematic for everyone, in particular it is someone who sees imposition of female stereotypes as a way by which women are oppressed.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 15/04/2021 13:44

Good for you OP, there are lots of us out there who agree with you. It shouldn't be controversial but it is.

As a pp said, this is now on the trending list, so you might get lots of 'you're all big meanies'.

Thank you to everyone who posted links...I have a lot of reading to do!

@JustcameoutGC

It wasn't even a personal line in the sand, it for me is about the lack of assessment and management of risk (actual and reputational) around use of language in materials that would have our logo on them.

I let my personal line in the sand get trampled over long ago.

It sounds like you have done the right thing, particularly given the initial response from the big boss. If his initial reaction was to say the points you made were good then I can’t see how, even if he is eventually brought to a different viewpoint, he can then accuse you of being a terrible person for making them.

Further, if his instinct is to see your point of view and he witnesses some unreasonable behaviour as push-back, it might be possible it will open his eyes to what’s happening.

And hopefully there’s a possibility that this will shift you from bring in the awful position of having to pretend to believe something you can’t. I hope that even if it’s uncomfortable now, there will be some relief from the ongoing pressure you’ve been under as a result.

Best of luck with the next steps.

Twistiesandshout · 15/04/2021 13:43

Well done! I've not yet got the confidence to personally air my views at work, however I do think it may come across my desk at some point soon in terms of approving language/communications on behalf of my organisation. Keep us posted on any fall out OP.

@ANewCreation

Gender critical - recognising that a woman is an adult human female, that women and girls are discriminated against because of their biology, and that gender is primarily a tool of the patriarchy used to oppress women.

And what extraordinary times we are living in that this GC statement should be a) in any way contentious or disputed; b) someone should feel sick admitting it to their boss and c) fearful of the consequences of holding these beliefs in a woke organisation.

Truly extraordinary and sad times indeed.
Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 15/04/2021 13:42

@Flowers24

Sorry what is GC?
Gender critical. Some good explanations upthread.

Well done OP.

geojellyfish · 15/04/2021 13:42

And sorry for the derail into disputing the poor definition of GC by @Shizuku

@JustcameoutGC you are wonderful. I would be cheering if this had happened in my workplace.

We need more people to stand up to policy capture as it is having a terrible impact on women's rights. You did a good thing and I guarantee that even if your email has been forwarded, there will be many more people in agreement with you than opposition. Good luck!

PotholeHellhole · 15/04/2021 13:41

Flowers24 one simple definition is that people who are gender-critical do not believe someone who was born male but who identifies as a woman is literally the same as a woman. But this may be over-simple.

Sorry what is GC?

MeltsAway · 15/04/2021 13:35

Solidarity.

You are a feminist: someone who sees the structural oppression of women as a sex class in patriarchy, through the application of socially constructed ideas about what people of each sex should do & how they should behave,

Rational, reasonable, and necessary.

Brava!! Star

Shrivelled · 15/04/2021 13:34

I just though GC was that you differentiated the unique struggles and rights of trans women with the unique struggles and rights of biological women. Extreme trans rights activists think that view is anti trans but most people don’t.

geojellyfish · 15/04/2021 13:34

Nice try @Shizuku Yet another attempt to misrepresent gender critical feminists.

I love it when internet strangers decide they are better able to talk about my beliefs than I am.

GC feminists believe gender is a construct used to oppress women and uphold the inequalities of patriarchy. We want societies to be free of the social constraints of gender stereotyping and conformity. Sex is not an identity, it should not determine who you are, what you do, how you dress or who you love. We recognise that men and women differ at a biological level, which in many instances is irrelevant, yet in others is fundamental.

We also feel that in order to tackle sexism, misogyny and the patriarchy, we need to be able to talk about sex.

The misrepresentation that GC=transphobic comes from a growing theory that gender supersedes sex. That man and woman are identities unrelated to our bodies. We disagree.

We don't hate transgender people, we don't deny their existence, we don't want them to die. We just don't believe anyone can change their sex and we are frustrated that our language is being compelled such that any emphasis on sex instead of gender earns accusations of transphobia.

Like JK Rowling, I want everyone to feel safe, confident and happy to live the life they want. However, sometimes, sex matters.

Oooeerrr I thought the MN algorithm meant that these pages never trended. For any newbies trying to figure this shit out, start with this as recommended above.

Well done op, sending support! There are more out there of us than you think - I don't know many people of my age who aren't gender critical.
