Gender Recognition Certificate for a fiver

Very surprised by this as I thought the GRA inquiry was still ongoing. I think this is disappointing. So now you can change a few documents, 'live as a woman (man), pay a fiver and voila you are recognised as the opposite sex.

A step in the wrong direction. I am wondering whats happening with the inquiry, the oral evidence of the women's groups due in April is no longer listed.

@Leafstamp - I was on that other thread too. The next group were due 12th April, that oral evidence session is no longer there, in fact there are no planned sessions:

committees.parliament.uk/work/658/reform-of-the-gender-recognition-act/

We know already that many are just using self id and because you cannot ask to see a certficate (see prisons thread) actually having one is probably neither here nor there to many who want to access women's spaces.

i am waiting now to see where this goes, it just worries me that this is the next step to the government just caving to the activists.

@DisgustedofManchester

It is still a medicalised process. If you think reducing the cost makes it any easier then... well I have no words
Oh I’m sure you have a few.

I honestly don't care if they charge a fiver or nothing. If the GRC exists, it shouldn't be something that can be in any sense bought. But are you implying it shouldn't be in any way a 'medicalised process'?Confused

Onerous? Ha! Try filling in a DLA application form or for PIP when you have learning disabilities, short term memory loss and are dyslexic.

I don't understand why anyone thinks it should be easy and barrier free? Even for those subscribing to transideology it is hardly a trivial matter is it?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/04/2021 09:27

My understanding was that it was always means-tested, so many people would have been able to get a GRC for a very low fee or even no fee. I believe some have commented that the two medical reports required often have to be paid for, so that bumps up the cost. A well-known Twitter legal expert tweeted a while back how easy and quick it had been to get a GRC, so not everybody finds it an onerous process.

Notoriouslynotnotious · 08/04/2021 09:23

There is no need to charge a fee for GRC. Whether they should exist at all I would question but if they do then they should be free.

I think the government said they were going to do this after the GRA consultation, it was their compromise to avoid going to full self-ID.

to be clear they said they'd reduce the fee, they didn't say they'd reduce it to five quid.

allmywhat · 08/04/2021 09:17

I think the government said they were going to do this after the GRA consultation, it was their compromise to avoid going to full self-ID.

Reducing it to 5 quid seems like a canny move if you assume the Government are trying to stoke the culture wars to screw over Labour (I do assume this.)

I think a lot of people are going to hear about how you can change your gender on your birth certificate for a fiver and think that it's ridiculous . And on the other side of the argument you've got Stonewall and no doubt many other TRA types whining it's still too much money - that ought to go down really well, especially with anyone who recently got a new passport, or anyone who's unfamiliar with the sheer mindblowing entitlement of this movement.

the oral evidence of the women's groups due in April is no longer listed.

This is confusing/concerning. Can you link to where you think it should be?

I was under the impression that the next speaking representatives (from women’s groups) were going to be announced on Monday (12th) and the oral evidence would be heard on 21st.

Some discussion on page 6 here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4194720-Womens-and-Equalities-inquiry-into-the-Reform-of-the-Gender-Recognition-Act?pg=6

Not good enough for some though.

Nancy Kelley, chief executive of LGBT charity Stonewall, said any fee "creates a barrier for some trans people".

bebanjo · 08/04/2021 09:02

I saw this yesterday, I did wonder if it would help or hinder if thousands of individuals who had never previously voiced any dysphoria suddenly applied for the certificate.
