Pro-porn Childline film encouraging kids to google BDSM etc

Jeez, just seen this from the Safe Schools Alliance UK on twitter. Six years ago Childline produced this pro-porn film which is basically an advert for PornHub masquerading as a child protection resource. It tells children that porn is "fun" & recommends genres like BDSM to google. It's had over 3 million views in the last 6 years, and goodness knows how much it has contributed to the rape culture we are now seeing in schools. It is illegal for under 18s to view porn, and children should be taught this and the harms of pornography, not encouraged to view it with a nod, nod, wink, wink attitude.

You can view the Safe Schools Alliance UK tweet here: twitter.com/SafeSchools_UK/status/1379528765261381634

SSAUK are calling on Childline and the NSPCC (who run Childline) to take this film down.

The Government should bring in age-verification for online porn ASAP to prevent children having easy access to online porn. All the laws have been passed, and the regulatory framework is in place. The Government bottled it at the last minute in 2019 after facing pressure from the powerful porn industry. Our children deserve better.

Child porn is the most commonly used term used, yes. IN PORN.

I thought you had a pro trans agenda because of your trans brother, Asugarr, but it seems you also have a pro porn agenda and are here to educate us on that too. How very...progressive.

There are some very questionable personalities and resources going into sex education in schools. Thread from 2019 (I believe this content was removed due to pressure from women on MN and subsequent media attention)

Helleofabore · 07/04/2021 22:42

Ok. I got it.

Child pornography is the term used by mainstream media so it is fine to use.

A video that sends very confusing messages about porn consumption but leaves with a breezy ‘porn is fun’ ‘porn is fine’ message for children is also fit for the purpose of explaining the negative aspects of porn consumption (which it barely touches on).

There is NO research offered by any poster who claims this video is good for teaching purposes that shows the positive benefits of porn consumption for under 18s.

Well, I am convinced. I am sure all those reading along are too.

yourhairiswinterfire · 07/04/2021 22:41

If anyone advised my child to go off and search the internet for that list of 'genres' mentioned back in the thread, I'd be reporting them to the police, no hesitation, regardless of their profession.

NiceGerbil · 07/04/2021 22:40

As a tangent, and I don't know if anyone has any thoughts.

I find it fascinating how threads on MN about porn or prostitution almost always attract a bunch of posters who seem interested only in that topic.

The posting pattern is always pretty similar:

Everyone does it
It's completely normal
Loads of people doing it enjoy it, good money
All men do it
If they say they don't they're lying
You're old fashioned/ a prude/ being cheated on/ etc etc

There's never any attempt to engage with any of the arguments. Just a blanket ITS FINE AND NORMAL SHUT UP.

why do they do this? What do they hope to gain. There is pretty much zero danger that porn or paying for sex will become impossible to do any time soon or even far off.
So why is it so vital to some to come on here and argue the toss (ha!)?

I don't really understand the psychology.

adviceseekingnamechanger · 07/04/2021 22:38

@ASugarr

'Child pornography' is the term most commonly used with the media which is why many of those who work with young people use it as its the most common term to them. I understand that porn isn't "made for children" and that any porn with a minor is sexual abuse and illegal. However it is just the most commonly used term.
It's funny isn't it? I know you'd argue misgendering and the use of language is harmful for trans people. But some journal refers to 'child pornography' and that somehow makes that language fine and official. But it's been pointed out what an awful and incorrect term it is but you're fine with that? It is not pornography. It is filmed rape.

I think you are a good person with good intentions but you need to understand this is the wrong term, the same as you would imagine tell someone referring to a TW as male is wrong @ASugarr

And thus you are part of the problem. Angry
Mibbiesaye · 07/04/2021 22:37

That abstract is from 2010. No one working with children today would ever use that phrase.

It's a term which anyone who has given it much thought, and certainly after it's inappropriateness has been pointed out, should forcibly reject not defend.

This is the feminism board on a parenting website. 'Child porn' is for many of us a completely unacceptable euphemism for images of child sex abuse. Call it what it is.

persistentwoman · 07/04/2021 22:34

Funny how women are told that every aspect of our sex based language is up for removal / revision but when we point out that the term child porn is unacceptable, we're told we're wrong cos.... reasons.... Confused

No it isn't. You shouldn't be normalizing the term. Safe adults need to model safe behaviour.

adviceseekingnamechanger · 07/04/2021 22:29

Think what you wish, that's fine 🤍

But no comment on calling it child porn. You presumably think that's ok. Jesus.

NiceGerbil · 07/04/2021 22:29

'Actually yes, we do. However not everyone who watches porn then gets into watching any illegal or abusive porn. Especially child porn. You have to activly seek child pornography so it isn't a common path. You can watch porn without having a porn addiction or watching abusive and unverified porn.'

???!!!

Incest porn is an extremely popular category. (WTF)
'barely legal' is very popular
Women categorised on race
And etc I'm sure we all know how it is

That's bog standard mainstream.

I can't understand how your comment relates to reality.

I note porn hub has been mentioned a lot.

You know why I stopped watching it? I went to their front page and there were loads and loads of pics that showed women who looked unconscious. Not on fancy sets. On average not new sofas. With standard normal house stuff around. And looked... I would say they were.

And I thought. No. No way. That's it for me.

Eventually they said they would ban content that looked like (maybe was) non consensual and they got lauded as being really ethical and progressive. This was a few years ago- I can't find it as the links are all for the recent stuff on Google.

But fucking hell. Saying you won't host content that is or looks like rape is progressive? And then not doing it and after a string of awful reports finally doing something pretty major but ONLY after they were threatened in the wallet?

This is an example of great ethics.

adviceseekingnamechanger · 07/04/2021 22:27

Anyone who refers to 'child porn' is validating the abuse of children. The filmed rape of children is not 'porn'. They don't get paid for it. They're not actors. It's rape. As is much of porn, but 'fine and fun' apparently. No need to mention trafficking. What next? Promote it as a career choice?

ASugarr · 07/04/2021 22:26

@CorvusPurpureus

I'm going to go out on a limb & say that our latest frequent flyer does not work in the field of sex education, or have a professional role working with young people.

Sharing nonsense from other...persons with odd ideas around safeguarding...on Twitter doesn't count. Fortunately.

Think what you wish, that's fine 🤍
Nonmaquillee · 07/04/2021 22:26

I watched about fifteen seconds then shut it down. It sickened me. "Porn is fun" - this video was commissioned by CHILDLINE????

Oh. I have crossed posted with quite a few people I see....

persistentwoman · 07/04/2021 22:24

It's incredible how self identified 'experts' so regularly demonstrate their lack of knowledge about children, young people and safeguarding. It would be funny if it wasn't so professionally dangerous. Hmm

Helleofabore · 07/04/2021 22:23

Especially child porn.

You mean, child sex abuse surely? A professional would never call it 'child porn' I would hope. Ever.

OhHolyJesus · 07/04/2021 22:20

You need to educate yourself

I don't think it's education that this poster needs so much as some time away from porn themselves.

I hope this poster and the 'sexual health advisors' stay out of my kids school.

Check your schools.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 07/04/2021 22:19

@asugar , You are not a safe sexual health 'educator'. Step carefully on a forum of parents if you are delivering content in schools. It is impossible to avoid hardcore porn, even on the main sites, you can't get away from, how did you put it ? 'abusive and unverified porn'.

Helleofabore · 07/04/2021 22:18

porn is fun and fine in what context as a person under 18? Do you have any studies that has shown this? That porn consumed at a young age has positive benefits for children under 18? Please share it here. You know that we will read it.

And I don't know how many times we can say this. That video was superficial. From a straight communication aspect, opening and closing with 'porn is fun and fine' does not reinforce anything except, 'porn is fun and fine'. From a straight communication aspect, the jokey way this was presented does not reinforce the seriousness of the topics in part four. And the 'dark side' did not go in anyway far enough.

So, while I fully support that children from earlier ages than 13-14 need to be told about porn, consent and porn's affects, this video is a poor communication tool for the purpose described. I would love to see any focus group results that stated any differently as I would be very suspect of its methodology.

In the meantime, please post any research that you have that supports that porn has positive benefits to under 18 year olds, that it is just fine and fun and that is what the overriding messaging should be. Particularly for 13 - 16 year olds.

I am really glad my child's school focuses so much on consent. They do that, according to the person in charge of those subjects, to counter the effect of porn as they have discovered from feedback that this is what the girls are overwhelmingly having trouble with. Young males who think porn is 'fun and fine' and missed the entire point about it NOT being real life.

So, however the message has been taught in the past few years about the risks and and the negative affects has been failing girls. At least my teen's school recognises it, and has tailored their courses to suit.
