And that's what we call "cis privilege".

The victims of rape who had to see the rape shelter covered in misogynistic, violent graffiti, and dead rats nailed to their door 'privileged' too? That not threatening?

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 04/04/2021 14:45

And that's what we call "cis privilege".

What do we call hanging up effigies of women people don’t agree with & nailing dead rats to the doors of rape shelters?

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 04/04/2021 14:43

You don't think LGB and particularly T people who use that centre will find it at all threatening?

Offensive, yes, Shizuku*. Threatening, no. It’s not backed by any reality or history of violence or death threats by women, so what’s to be scared of?

I discount TWs’ claims of being frightened by unarmed non-threatening women taking non-violent actions, the same way I discount their claims that using their previous name “literally kills” them.

334bu · 04/04/2021 14:41

So sex≠ gender is a sign of cis privilege? Can you explain please?

AdHominemNonSequitur · 04/04/2021 14:41

@Seventrees

"Sex is not gender", "My oppression is not your identity" " Buying babies"
That is definitely gender critical sentiments. I agree with the sentiments, I disagree with writing it in spray paint all over a memorial. It's going to really suck for the person who has to pressure wash that off.

Political graffiti is not unusual in Spain see above. Why would a a slogan saying sex≠ gender be threatening?

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 04/04/2021 14:35

The slogan on the glass cover over the memorial (which was quickly cleaned off) says “Down with the Montero law”, which would allow self-ID, NotBad.
www.anarchistfederation.net/feminist-collective-protests-against-proposed-trans-and-lgtbi-laws-at-spanish-equality-ministry/

Women are basically opposing the loss of single-sex rights the UK government tried to slip past us in 2019, with proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act 2004. But as in Spain, women over here stood up for our rights.

Shizuku · 04/04/2021 14:33

@thinkingaboutLangCleg

I’ve pored through the Twitter photos of the graffitied LGBT building, and I can’t find any death threats, threats of violence or pornographic abuse.

The slogans simply make feminist points, eg that ‘Queer’ is now a misogynistic movement and that women’s oppression is sex-based.

Graffiti is ugly, but it’s a non-violent response to some very aggressive male actions, including physical violence. Threats of rape, injury and death are standard in TRA communications against women. The dead rat nailed to a Rape Crisis Centre door would have scared a fair number of victims off trying to access help. So the feminists are being comparatively polite.

The other photo shows slogans painted over a transwoman’s memorial. Again, it’s just discourtesy, and the message is political — opposing patriarchy and the Montero law that would weaken women’s rights by replacing sex with gender:
thefreeonline.wordpress.com/2021/02/22/feminist-collective-protests-against-proposed-trans-and-lgtbi-laws-at-spanish-equality-ministry/

But I do disapprove of defacing anyone’s memorial. Even with a slogan I agree with.

Oh and TRAs, including prominent ones such as Rachel McKinnon, were practically queuing up to denounce the vandalism of VRR as a false flag. Some of them were flat out saying the women who run the place had done it themselves.

Shizuku · 04/04/2021 14:31
@DimidDavilby

I trust you have made similar comments about TRAs and the many, many violent words and actions, physical assault, threats of physical assault death and rape, dehumanisation they have made against GC women? If not, why not?

I can't read Spanish but from the OP, it doesn't sound like the vandalism here was making violent or sexual threats. More a political point. Not exactly in the same league as the TRA tactics.

@Shizuku What are you views on the TRA tactics against GC women?
"@Shizuku What are you views on the TRA tactics against GC women?"

I openly condemn direct threats of violence against anyone. It's something that's quite important to me having been sexually assaulted and beaten up several times and having seen a trans friend partially paralysed by a transphobic attack.

A lot of whataboutism going on here.

It's not always a fallacy to use "whataboutism". It depends on context.

For people condemning the vandalism, but hoping the other side also condemns the violence and rape threats coming from elements within that position, what is wrong with that exactly?

Also, if certain people get super-righteous over this, while ignoring the behaviour on their own side, again, it could be a fair point yes?

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 04/04/2021 14:26

No death threats, Feck. All reasonable feminist slogans. The only offence is that they’re graffiti, and in one case on the glass cover over a memorial, easily cleaned off.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 04/04/2021 14:20

I disagree with any kind of vandalism and to do it on a memorial is just disgraceful.
However someone spray painting the equivalent of 'down with the patriarchy' on a gender centre is not the same as the hung effigies of women, 'kill all terfs', the guillotines, bomb threats and assaults at women's talks, or the endless nooses and guns pointed at women on social media.
Let's be honest. This particular bit of vandalism was the exception to the rule. The constant targeting of women by trans activists isn't an exception. It is the rule.
I'm a little tired of trans activists pretending otherwise.
This is nothing other than the equivalent of an MRA pointing at the extremely rare female sex offender and using it to pretend that women are just as bad.
Clean up the shit in your own movement, Shizuku, before gleefully pointing a finger at us because you've come across a rare example of a supposedly GC person being disrespectful.
It's not the GC movement who are carrying out 99.9% of the vandalism, threats and abuse.

334bu · 04/04/2021 14:18

No threats or insults.

334bu · 04/04/2021 14:17

Graffiti on the memorial reads " you are the patriarchy" " Down with the Montero Law"

Defacing a memorial is awful and should be condemned. However, regarding the centre, it should be pointed out that Spain has long had a tradition of political graffiti, which this is.

Strangeststrangment · 04/04/2021 14:17

@Sophoclesthefox

I’ve no idea what thread dimid is reading, but it doesn’t seem to be this one.

I’m so over “condemning” and “denouncing”, because it all still feeds into this narrative that we have to pick a side, then stick to it like glue, never deviate from the prescribed set of beliefs, punish people that do something wrong etc etc. Let’s just...not do that.

Absolutely this. Picking sides and digging your heels in is a pretty poor way to approach debate.

I actually think graffiti is a symptom of where society goes wrong, whether it's artsy Banksy or scribble taglines. The best course of action is to look at why it is happening.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 04/04/2021 14:17

I was looking for the death threats (I don’t read Spanish). Are there any?

DisgustedofManchester · 04/04/2021 14:14

A lot of whataboutism going on here.

CardinalLolzy · 04/04/2021 14:13

I'm someone who believes both that sex is real and matters, and that vandalism and violence are bad. Anyone vandalising anything clearly doesn't share my beliefs, do they?

NotBadConsidering · 04/04/2021 14:08

I join the condemnation of such vandalism. I don’t believe it to be a “false flag”, mainly because I don’t imagine the aggressive element of trans activism to be so willing to call themselves misogynists just to make a point.

Similarly I don’t believe the big bearded man throwing water over an actual woman (not a building) to be a GC plant willing to physically assault a woman to make trans activists look bad:

m.youtube.com/watch?v=RizhPZ7eP0E

And I also don’t believe that all of these accounts who threatened an actual person (not a building) with rape to actually be GC sock accounts trying to make trans activists look bad. I think they are real:

medium.com/@rebeccarc/j-k-rowling-and-the-trans-activists-a-story-in-screenshots-78e01dca68d

I’d like a bit more information on the translation of the graffiti on the memorial. What does that say? According to Wikipedia Cristina Ortiz was subjected to death threats for other reasons prior to death and the memorial plaque has been stolen before. What did it say to make it clear it was “Gender critical” people responsible? According my my translate app on phone it says “you are patriarchy”. Is that right?

MarieDelaere · 04/04/2021 13:51

@DimidDavilby

Absolutely disgusting. At least the GCs are showing their true colours! No doubt some of those here will claim it is false flag attack.
Do you think so?! A false flag.

I'd not have thought of that. Interesting idea.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 04/04/2021 13:51

It would be nice if they also denounced the vandalism at Vancouver Rape Relief.
