I think that was the general gist of the OP, no?

Pretty much. Graffiti is just as bad if not far worse than effigies, dead rats, rape threats & physical violence. And stickers are probably the worst thing of all.

@MonkeyNotOrgangrinder

Not quite on a par with violent men hanging an effigy of a real actual woman from a tree, is it? Or is anyone going to argue that it's equivalent?

Seems very unlikely to me. Many Gender critical people are gay, themselves; and vandalism is just not a thing. Certainly not in Britain.

Looking at the links it seems as if people are desperate to link supposed 'transphobia' to homophobia' and general right wing stuff...which is just so wide of the mark.

Not sure what is going on in Spain, or the context, but there has been a lot of street protest and violence recently ( in Catalonia/Barcelona)

Gender Criticals vandalise LGBT centre and deface memorial to trans woman

Except they didn’t vandalise the centre, they just graffitied the outside walls. And the anti-patriarchy slogan, on the glass shielding the memorial plaque, was quickly wiped off and did not deface the plaque itself.

Erkrie · 04/04/2021 17:03

The silence certainly is deafening.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 04/04/2021 16:24

It is interesting that the people who rushed to condemn the graffiti aren’t coming back to condemn the dead rat etc.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 04/04/2021 16:05

I can't disagree with the message.

CorvusPurpureus · 04/04/2021 15:54

Well, whoever did it, I think it was a twattish thing to do, tbh.

Not on a par with death threats & rats, but there's a place for political graffiti & a memorial isn't it, IMO.

Agree it was very lucky that the community spirited types were there so serendipitously promptly to document it before cleaning it off...

334bu · 04/04/2021 15:47

disagree with vandalism. The point could have been made by nailing something to the building or attaching it in some way.

You mean like chalk and ribbons ? Oh wait that terrifies people too ! How about crochet?

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/04/2021 15:45

@Mummyoflittledragon

Indeed.
Sorry that was to the serendipity comment.
Mummyoflittledragon · 04/04/2021 15:43

Women are basically opposing the loss of single-sex rights the UK government tried to slip past us in 2019, with proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act 2004.

Sorry, that got garbled. I meant, the women in Spain are basically opposing the same loss of single-sex rights that we in the UK had to fight in 2019. That was when the UK government tried to change the Gender Recognition Act 2004.

@Erkrie

That is definitely gender critical sentiments. I agree with the sentiments, I disagree with writing it in spray paint all over a memorial. It's going to really suck for the person who has to pressure wash that off

Already done it would seem. By a couple of community spirited lads who happened to have something to clean it off in their back pocket, and the camera at the ready to post on social media. It further cemented their community mindedness when they were able to explain to passerby's who were asking what had happened, about the bad GC people who must have done this.

Jolly good show...

Amazing serendipity.
R0wantrees · 04/04/2021 15:09

You don't think LGB and particularly T people who use that centre will find it at all threatening?

It may be that (L) lesbian and (B) bisexual women are the ones protesting about the centre.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 04/04/2021 15:04

Criminalising feminist thought? Yes, I can see why some people would find that ‘progressive’.

Nightbear · 04/04/2021 15:01

Some of the slogans seem to be about paid surrogacy, which is illegal in Spain. Does the centre help men find surrogate mothers in Ukraine and other countries? Otherwise it’s a bit of a random.

R0wantrees · 04/04/2021 14:58

"It says "you are the patriarchy, down with Montero's law". Irene Montero is our gov head of equality and has been fighting for a pretty progressive trans equality act, which they oppose with the usual rethoric (Men in dresses, erasure of "real" women, bathroom panic...)"

from article linked above:

February 22, 2021
'Feminist collective protests against proposed Trans and LGTBI laws at Spanish Equality ministry'
(extract)
"A group of protesters, called by Espacio Feminista Radical (EFR), have gathered this Saturday at noon before the Ministry of Equality, in Madrid, to denounce the consequences that, in their opinion, will have the identity laws – Trans Law and LGTBI Law-– drafted by the department of Irene Montero.

According to the protesters (several dozen), both norms “criminalize feminist discourse.” One of the spokespersons for EFR, Laura Arribas, has insisted that the group she represents does not go against the rights of any person but simply defends the rights of women. (continues)

Conflict in the Government

The PSOE and Podemos Parties, increasingly opposed by the ‘trans law’
“The Montero law aims to shield the right to ‘self-identification registration’ of sex”, explain the spokespersons of EFR, which, in their opinion, is “a frontal attack on the rights of women in Spain” that “will affect many areas such as positive measures contained in the Equality Law or, the collection of truthful statistics about violence and structural inequality suffered by women “.

They also believe that “it will violate the security and privacy of women in public locker rooms, shelters for victims of sexual and sexist violence, female modules in prisons and nursing homes. Not to mention the total destruction of women’s sport, turning it into mixed sport.”

“Making gender an identity by law is to undermine the historical achievements of feminism. And criminalizing criticism of gender identity, as the Ministry claims in the leaked draft of the LGTBI Law, means criminalizing feminist thought,” (continues)

Something like a rat?

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 04/04/2021 14:53

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/04/2021 14:51

There is no threat to physical safety. Why should LGB and particularly T people find it threatening when the message is non violent?

All it says is stuff like down with the patriarchy and sex isn’t gender. It’s pretty innocuous stuff.

As I said, I find the graffiti on the memorial shocking as o disagree with graffiti on a memorial stone...but maybe you should take a walk in Pere-Lachaise. So much graffiti on the gravestones of the famous there. I can’t imagine it having all been complementary.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 04/04/2021 14:48

Privilege? Is that because women actually rule the world?

I must’ve missed that privilege. Explain this to me?

Zinco · 04/04/2021 14:47

And that's what we call "cis privilege".

Is it a "privilege" to be aware that biological sex is real?

I guess some people might reasonably be considered "disadvantaged" if they are unable to recognize the reality of sex difference.
