Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

ATTENTION COMBABES! - yes seriously this is how Women's Strike thinks they will encourage women to join their demo!

For some reason both the SWP and Women's Strike seem to be able to afford to have sponsored posts. And as usual f*book's great algorithm assumed I would be interested.

But what was heartening was to see women posting comments about just how insulting this was. And someone posted "Now I live in Brighton and this is how younger Left-leaning feminist-identifying women speak to each other."

I am getting seriously worried as to why we are bothering with education if this is the level of thought process among young people, particularly women. And those going into to debt to get a university education are somehow so stimilated by their encounter with academia that they start talking like this!

Sigh.

Sorry cant get the sponsored facebook link. But this is what it says:

--

ATTENTION COMBABES!
📣 SATURDAY 1PM SPEAKERS' CORNER HYDE PARK
💥FEMINISTS KILL THE BILL 💥
We need to resist the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. It endangers the rights and safety of every single one of us, and particularly those who are at the sharped edge of state violence, including gypsy, roma and traveler communities, migrants, sex workers and racialised communities.
The bill is using “protecting women” as a cover to expand police powers and increase custodial sentence but this is not enough to prevent violence and is troubling given police officers’ implication in cases of violence against women.
There is no version of the bill that is tolerable.
We cannot let this bill pass, so we must take the streets!
❌ Cops are the perpetrators - they do not keep us safe!
❌ The state does not protect us

❌ Giving them more power will not make us safer
Join us on Saturday to #KillTheBill
Bring your placards, noise and feminist rage!

@stumbledin

More and more I am beginning to think that a lot of what is happening is inspired by little more than hatred of older women.

So you make fun of them, you have politics that you know will annoy or upset them, and you emphasise how young attractive to men you are.

this is their idea of liberation.

Being a "comrade" to men - true equality.

I sometimes wonder what their children's generation will conspire to do to make their lives miserable. The whole identity bullshit could provide endless ways of taking the piss.

Sad Angry

What do we want!

'Lieration from mumy!'

When do we want it...

dyslek · 02/04/2021 17:00

Comrade is a lovely word imo. It denotes equality between people whoever they are, man or woman.
Not suprised its been changed to this 1970s sexist monstrosity.

MichelleofzeResistance · 02/04/2021 16:22

Me too.

At the moment I think we've reached the point where to sufficiently rebel against the establishment and shock them into hysteria you would now need to wear a three piece suit or twinset and embrace the fashionability of the socially over the hill and past it, vote loudly and strictly Tory, have Views about people being allowed to be female, homosexual or independent of thought if they want to, have even more shocking Views about personal responsibility and respecting others as you do yourself, despise social media and Netflix, and call yourself Barbara or Alan. Less the Hells Angels than Brideshead Revisited.

SunsetBeetch · 02/04/2021 15:59

Ew. I think that post has given me hives.

stumbledin · 02/04/2021 15:15

Have just realised my thread heading has outed me as gender critical.

Or even sexist.

So wrong of me to assume that Combabes would be women.

@RoyalCorgi

WTF is a " sharped edge"? (I know that's not the worst thing about it, but still...)

Also "racialised communities".

SWP is notorious for telling female members who had been raped by senior SWP officials not to go to the police, but agree instead to accept its own internal investigation. Nasty bunch of misogynists.

And this

and is troubling given police officers’ implication in cases of violence against women

Implication??

"Combabes" is beyond awful.

andyoldlabour · 02/04/2021 13:07

Deliriumoftheendless

"Maybe OJ is a combabe"

OJ's Wiki page describes him as a "feminist" Grin. Their Facebook page is a joke.

Imnobody4 lots of issues just sorted out for me - thanks Daffodil

MrsWooster · 02/04/2021 12:34

So, 24 years after the phrase ‘Blair’s Babes’ was roundly vilified, we’re back. This world is fucked up.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 02/04/2021 12:10

Combabe sounds like a word I could imagine my long-ago male lefty comrades using, while promising women’s rights would be next on the agenda, after everything that actually mattered.

Imnobody4 · 02/04/2021 11:41

Really this just confirms the Flynn effect. I truly believe intelligence is now in freefall.

A defining trend in human intelligence tests that saw people steadily obtaining higherIQ scoresthrough the 20th century has abruptly ended, a new study shows.

TheFlynn effect– named after the work of Kiwi intelligence researcher James Flynn – observed rapid rises inintelligence quotientat a rate of about 3 IQ points per decade in the 20th century, but new research suggests these heady boom days are long gone.

An analysis of some 730,000 IQ test results by researchers from the Ragnar Frisch Centre for Economic Research in Norway reveals the Flynn effect hit its peak for people born during the mid-1970s, and has significantly declined ever since.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/04/2021 11:13

I'm cringing so much it hurts.

Deliriumoftheendless · 02/04/2021 11:11

Maybe OJ is a combabe. I shall certainly use it to describe him from now on, he will be so flattered.

Kotatsu · 02/04/2021 11:06

racialised communities.

This is language I've only heard in Canada before...

If the police (and yes, there are issues with the police) aren't destroyed, who are they proposing will protect women instead? I feel that destroying without having a suitable replacement is an extremely poor idea

ChattyLion · 02/04/2021 10:34

This thread for the OJ T-shirt thing.
Anyway, it’s not all about him...

PotholeHellhole · 02/04/2021 10:29

I'm baffled. The word "comrade" is gender-neutral. Why aren't they using it?

People get abused for being transphobic for started a post with "ladies" in endometriosis sub-reddits, and this facebook ad goes out of its way to be exclusionary of non-binary socialists when there is no need. This sets out to excludes people who are non-binary.

If it comes up on my fb, I might report it for transphobia.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/04/2021 10:18

And what kind of rubbish socialist doesn't recognise prostitution as class-based oppression?

The sort who prioritises men's wants over women's rights?

EsmaCannonball · 02/04/2021 09:55

I'm starting to think the word 'violence' has been bastardised almost as much as the word 'woman'. And what kind of rubbish socialist doesn't recognise prostitution as class-based oppression?

RoyalCorgi · 02/04/2021 09:45

PineappleCakes · 02/04/2021 09:35

No surprise that it's OJ Envy

BahHumbygge · 02/04/2021 09:33

"Don't call me babe" is the only response this deserves Angry

ErrolTheDragon · 02/04/2021 09:29

@Xanthangum

Never heard the word before, so thought I would look it up.

First result? What a surprise, it's a "male Guardian pundit''! (Species originally identified earlier in this thread by @ChattyLion)

Good grief. It's a mixed sex group (plus a nice spaniel), are they all 'combabes'?Confused

Presumably it's a term for leftish young women, before the age at which they're past worth mentioning and fit only to make the tea?Hmm

Mellivora · 02/04/2021 09:13

I used to have dealings with the SWP, they were a bunch of misogynists who jumped on every band wagon to ultimately push their own Marxist agenda. They actually do a massive disservice and trade unions have an over representation of them because it gives them a voice. My favourite was a petition about support for striking staff in a local government authority. I worked for another local authority and was an active trade unionist. I apparently got a lot of signatures becuse I was pretty according to a comrade who was on the same trade union branch committee as me.
