My former international level playing friend shared some stuff on her Facebook last night on this, and guess what, supporters of transwomen in rugby aren’t happy about this fudge either. They feel it’s treating women as being weak, and that it’s sexist to think that women can’t handle playing transwomen? Then they list all of the current female players who would be excluded on account of being too tall/heavy, though they seem to have missed the point that none of them are trans.

So it’s unfair because a 170cm, 80kg woman and a 170 cm, 80kg transwoman are the same. No acknowledgement of the impact of a male puberty.

And no mention of transmen at all, of course, despite that being the largest population of applicants under the proposed policy.

Photos of the post, which is from a group called rugby for all, to follow

@EsmaCannonball

I have a family member who coaches and plays men's rugby. There is a big problem in the sport at the moment with teenage boys realising they do not have the physique to play at a professional level. Male rugby players are significantly taller and heavier on average than they were just 20 years ago, making it far harder for another Austin Healey or Jonny Wilkinson to come through the sport. It would only take a few of these boys to realise self-id is less risky than steroids to make a massive difference to the women's sport.
New Zealand Rugby has dealt with this by introducing an under 85kg club league so that players who aren't the hulking mass required in the professional men's game can still enjoy the sport. Can you imagine the potential for English participation if the RFU spent its time on value-add ideas like this rather than trying to fit people who have gone through male puberty in the women's game? 🤷🏻‍♀️

"Its up there with rando blokes getting to decide if a woman can have birth control."

This is random blokes deciding that male bodied players can play in female sport.

persistentwoman · 01/04/2021 18:08

@DisgustedofManchester

The moral question is should people who do not play, watch or have any interest in women's rugby have a say? Its up there with rando blokes getting to decide if a woman can have birth control.
Grin Grin

Imagine how women would react if men decided that they were now women and women were to be renamed, silenced, marginalised and all our sports and safe single sex spaces removed by said males...... oh wait.....

ListeningQuietly · 01/04/2021 18:04

Major problem with that survey
(a) no checks on people filling it out more than once
(b) free text boxes will invalidate their data
snigger

AfternoonToffee · 01/04/2021 18:01

I have just gone outside to our outdoor games box and picked up the mini rugby ball whilst identifying as a rugby player. I presume I am ok to comment now as that is generally all that is required elsewhere. Hmm

No it’s not.
WorkingItOutAsIGo · 01/04/2021 17:31

Yes, married to a rugby player, mum to two rugby players, member of a premiership side since I was 16...I feel perfectly entitled to comment even if I have never played.

Abhannmor · 01/04/2021 17:06

This is so retrograde. My daughters first bf was 6ft 7in at seventeen years of age. Very fit , did martial arts etc. But his mum wouldn't let him play rugby. There are way too many collisions in today's game and players are "bulked up" more than ever.Wtf are the RFU lawyers thinking of?

Leafstamp · 01/04/2021 16:27

Or play themselves.
Of course. Apologies for missing this one out.

I follow rugby. I have a season ticket for a premiership side, I've travelled extensively to watch with my female rugby buddy. My DP used to play (supports the wrong team though... Grin) We live and breathe rugby and watch the ladies games. Ladies rugby has exploded in popularity, they are household names, how many other team sports can claim that? Girls can't miss out on this and I want EVERYONE to be angry on their behalf. Most of the men I've spoken to about it think it's an absolutely ridiculous idea and even the smallest back wouldn't want to smash into a lady on the pitch. They acknowledge that they could cause serious harm.
Helleofabore · 01/04/2021 16:17

Should people who are not female get a say in women's sports/spaces/prisons/language? Should they get to define us?

I too would like Disgusted’s answer to this.

Should people who do not have the body formed around the potential to produce large gametes, whether or not they do produce large gametes, ever get an opinion on the definition of woman, female, girl? Should they ever have any right to access the protections set up for those people with that body type?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 01/04/2021 16:14

In other sports - the first woman to referee and English Football League match is appointed. Anyone going to ask Rebecca Welch to cite the offside rule?

Pshaw!

Sophoclesthefox · 01/04/2021 16:09

I have not read the thread, or the material that the thread is about, and I certainly don’t have any interest in the topic, but by god I’m going to scold you anyway, you silly little women!

Imagine the idea of fillies being interested in rugger, whatever next!

334bu · 01/04/2021 16:06

Even those with no connection now may well be the mothers or grandmother's of future players.

Should people who are not female get a say in women's sports/spaces/prisons/language? Should they get to define us? Or should they be prioritised simply because they decide they feel like a women even though they have no idea what it actually is to be a woman?

As usual the assumption that boring old mummies can’t possibly be interested in orchard involvement with rugby

CuriousaboutSamphire · 01/04/2021 15:53

And as you are asked to state that connection, tight at the beginnig of the form, it becomes obvious that you haven't looked at it - which begs the question: Why are you here berating us?

Well, let me reassure you then. I have some association with the RFU. Many here are parents to some players, male and female. Some play, some are gay and play, again male and female. Others are women who value the safety and dignity of women. All sorts of connections abound.

You've made an assumption. Disgusted indeed!

On the form it asks for your involvement level (e.g. parent, coach, volunteer, player etc) so I guess they can weight them accordingly if they wish.

Really?

Do you think that anyone on this thread is not ‘involved’ in some way? Or is it just meant to make women trying to ensure other women, including future generations and our daughters, are safe, shamed?
