Is this ok for my email pronouns

My company has an auto filed message under our email signatures

Xxx asks colleagues, clients and partners to respect that my pronouns are ... ( I fill this)

I want to put.... Myname. Which is obviously female as Its a classic British name, but often clients I deal with in the EMEA areas write to me as my surname or Mr surname, just assuming I'm a man and you know what I just don't care. I don't want to write she/ they/ that/ wear a hat.

I see a Sainsbury’s in Edinburgh has brought in pronouns on staff badges. Oh I can only imagine the reactions to that...

NoSquirrels · 26/03/2021 07:50

@Miaowse

Could HR be persuaded to offer staff a choice of signature:

Xxx asks colleagues, clients and partners to respect preferred pronouns where stated.

Or

Xxx asks colleagues, clients and partners to respect preferred pronouns. My preferred pronouns are (insert preferred pronouns).

This shows the company respects preferred pronouns without putting pressure on anyone who may feel uncomfortable about declaring pronouns for whatever reason.

This is an EXCELLENT suggestion.

Neither here / nor there

Espirito · 26/03/2021 00:09

My pronouns are....not mine to dictate.

The likelihood of someone using your pronouns whilst addressing you is so low, it's overtly aggressive to demand control over the words that come out of other people's mouths. It's also generally considered rude to refer to someone by the other third person pronouns when they're in earshot. Who's they, the cat's nibling?

FuriousAndFrustrated · 25/03/2021 21:04

This is a very good reason not to declare your femaleness at work!

'For me to know, and you to find out' ?

Mrsmorton · 25/03/2021 20:44

@EmpressWitchDoesntBurn I was going to cite the Yogyakarta principles.

Op something like "announcing my pronouns would demonstrate that my company has breached article 6 of the Yogyakarta principles." Is what I'm planning to do when my organisation starts this bull Shit.

TrickyBiscuits · 25/03/2021 20:34

I’m in all out war about this shite at work at the moment.

It’s aggressively misogynistic and only serves to further delete my sex by attempting to render it irrelevant.

AnnaBegins · 25/03/2021 20:04

I had similar recently and stated "my pronouns are commensurate with my biological sex"

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 25/03/2021 19:58

@toffeebutterpopcorn

I have been getting ‘cold call’ emails from people. It doesn’t look professional and I am wary of doing business with people who I may find tricky to work with.
Agree. I assume that anyone with preferred pronouns in their email signature is, at best, hard of thinking and, at worst, a misogynist. It's a useful red flag to avoid them.

eurochick · 25/03/2021 19:49

Sex-based, like the oppression of women for millennia.

Alternista · 25/03/2021 19:49

My pronouns are:
Awesome
Massive
Eternal
Steadfast
A societal construct
Protected
Lifelong
Inconsequential
Just right
Perfect Grin

I worry they might try and compel us to do this. Mind you they’ve been trying to compel us to put profile photos for years and only half the company have 😂

FemaleAndLearning · 25/03/2021 19:34

@tootyfruitypickle

I've got a training course soon on this shit and I'm worried we will have to state our pronouns in some zoom breakout group. My workplace is a stonewall champion.

I won't be stating pronouns but I also can't risk my job.
Is the consensus on here that 'I don't mind what you call me' or 'I'm not comfortable sharing my pronouns' the safest option? Both are true !

I was in a zoom meeting where someone had put their pronouns after his name on the Zoom window. Honestly I lost all respect for him and I really struggled to listen to him. Obviously sex based pronouns too. They do it to be an ally to trans and non binary people but I'm not sure it is what those people really want?
tootyfruitypickle · 25/03/2021 19:30

In your situation OP I would delete or leave blank.
God there are people at my work who would love to make this mandatory!

Chi/chis/chisel.

Xxx asks colleagues, clients and partners to respect that my pronouns are ...not relevant in the context of this email

StealthPolarBear · 25/03/2021 18:35

I would ask someone to confirm in writing that this is mandatory.
I'd be tempted to declare mine as FUCK/THIS/SHIT but I'm guessing you want to keep your job

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/03/2021 18:31

Not something I should have to think about?

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 25/03/2021 18:30

If you need to out-woke HR, tell them they’re contravening the 6th Yogyakarta Principle by forcing you to declare your gender identity.

yogyakartaprinciples.org/principle-6/

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 25/03/2021 18:25

The choice not to declare your preferred pronoun should be there. Just as you can 'prefer not to say' about ethnicity in a survey.

Others have had more inventive responses. The point about people not being 'out' a transgender is well made.

DeusEx · 25/03/2021 18:21

And that includes a trans colleague: her name is female, she dresses as a woman and has done for years, clearly referring ‘she’ is her preferred pronoun.

DeusEx · 25/03/2021 18:20

I am yet to see anyone put it in their signature for whom their pronouns aren’t bloody obvious from their name and appearance.
