Laurence Fox answers Women’s Place UK questions

As a candidate for London mayor Laurence Fox has answered five questions on women's rights and it is a breath of fresh air. Highlights being:

First of all, the police cannot protect what it does not define. We acknowledge that women are adult human females. They are vulnerable as a result of biological sex.

Acknowledge that The Equality Act 2010 provides legislative protection for women by virtue of their sex. We will enforce it without fear or favour and protect the rights of women to single sex spaces.

Ring fence funding for single-sex refuges and support services

Lets hope this puts pressure on the other candidates

Someone needs to say these things. If other candidates think he's wrong about something so common-sense, they can come out and explain to us why.

I don't see myself voting for him, but I think it's important that all the candidates give distinct and sincere answers. The other parties are too cowardly to say the obvious on this issue, so they stick to a conspiracy of silence or bland platitudes in front of mainstream voters. This isn't sustainable.

Sometimes it takes an outsider competitor to force an issue. It's what UKIP did to the Tories. They sunk like a stone once their work was done. I'm not a Ukipper or a Leaver of any stripe, just commenting on the mechanism.

NecessaryScene1 · 19/03/2021 20:14

Single issue voters are very effective at pushing their issues. There's a reason abortion rights are at risk in the US, and gun control hasn't happened. The people opposing oppose hard.

Politicians don't listen to people who are not prepared to withhold their vote.

BeagleEagle · 19/03/2021 20:13

@ListeningQuietly

Single issue voters make poor decisions
Evidently. He's saying something appealing to us in order to get our vote and will likely do fuck all to change anything, but he will try to undermine the COVID response and anti-racist activism. Voting for him on this issue would make one a selfish chump

BeagleEagle · 19/03/2021 20:07

@LunaHeather that's a statistical likelihood, doesn't make him any less racist.

Good on him, finally a voice of common sense against the ridiculously OTT PC crowd. Women (those with XX chromosomes) need someone to stand up and say it like it is.

LunaHeather · 19/03/2021 20:02

@BeagleEagle

Absolute slap in the face to our black sisters to even consider him as viable for anything other than a bin
I don't think I am the only woman of colour who will vote for him.
ArcheryAnnie · 19/03/2021 20:00

He is, as others have said, a knob, and no particular friend to women. He has answered the questions very sensibly, though, which is both a surprise and a good example.

I will take this as a plus. But he's still a knob, and he's not getting my vote.

(Not relevant, but I still love Hathaway - despite Lozza - and will die on the hill that he's in love with Lewis.)

CardinalLolzy · 19/03/2021 19:55

Women have been saying this stuff for years. It's not suddenly amazing because a professional contrarian says it.

LunaHeather · 19/03/2021 19:53

Thank you for highlighting this OP

He automatically gets my vote as there's no other feasible options.

At the moment, anyone putting this view out there is brave. It's tragic but we need a candidate who knows what a woman is and I need a candidate who is anti lockdown.

ListeningQuietly · 19/03/2021 19:50

If you believe he will do ANY of that
(much of which is not within the powers of a mayor)
good luck

ChristinaXYZ · 19/03/2021 19:48

I agree he is a contrarian but these are thought out detailed answers.

I guess one's views comes down to how dangerous a position one thinks women are in at the moment. I think it is really dangerous.

Look at the degree of capture of parties and institutions - so for me to have someone recognise what a woman is who wants to protect single sex spaces, ring fence money (perhaps stopping the defuding of refuges that is starting to happen) and who wants to do this:

Conduct public awareness / safety campaigns targeted at men to highlight changes they can make to help women feel safer.
Fund programmes which support men to challenge other men’s behaviour / support men to change their own behaviour

and this

Set up an independent body to investigate police officers suspected of domestic violence and violence against women and girls.

and this

Commission a Macpherson style report to address policing in relation to women.

Then yes flipping please - whether I vote for him or not he has put a direct challenge out to other politicians and parties in London and beyond, and thank god, because someone needs to! He has set a bar on women's rights and safety that others get nowhere near.

If you feel women are under threat then that's a huge, huge thing to have happened.

As to his other policies, well of course, read them and don't vote for him if they cross your red lines. I don't like everything he says but I am not going to call him names because I'd get called names for my GC views and people are more nuanced than that and we need to stop shouting.

But in a democracy isn't it just so, so good that a well known person standing for office has come out and said some of this???

Necessary
Laurence fox knows EXACTLY what sex is.
He wants the fairer sex weakened and demeaned
and a vote for him does NOT help women.

The worm will turn it has turned a long way in the last 3 years on the insanity of TWAW in left wing parties

but there is never a justification in voting for people
who are 95% shit and 5% anti trans

buckeejit · 19/03/2021 19:43

I thought he was a tosser but can't remember what I'd read to make me think that. I like what I know of Billie Piper so had previously thought him ok by default.

It will be interesting to see how much he gets hounded for voicing his opinions though.

Fucket · 19/03/2021 19:41

I think he’s trying to be the new Nigel Farage with a UKIP mark 2. But based around free speech. I don’t know who is financing him but I think he’s quite popular with the red wall voters. I suspect much like UKIP he will exist to keep the Conservatives conservative. So long as there is a political party that will steal enough votes in swing seats they won’t dare to go woke.

at least you know where you stand with Fox. He’s not hiding his true opinions behind a woke agenda or trying to fob voters off with what he thinks we want to hear, I.e starmer. So in that way I respect him, but no I wouldn’t vote for him.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 19/03/2021 19:40

I find it refreshing anyone is answering these fairly basic questions, publicly.

My concern is that , because he's a bit odd, this will be an easy way for the others to differentiate themselves from him.

I respect the "give no fucks" attitude though.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/03/2021 19:36

mostly because he realised being a bit controversial was a good way to keep being talked about.

Which maybe is why he is doing this, as he knows it will be commented on.

bitheby · 19/03/2021 19:34

He's not a breath of fresh air. This is why voting for anything or anyone on a single issue is a bad idea.

NecessaryScene1 · 19/03/2021 19:34

Siding?

No, voting against candidates who don't know what sex is.

No use saying you don't know what sex is and then complaining you lose votes.

Choose policies to appeal to people, earn votes.

Biscuitsanddoombar · 19/03/2021 19:34

@CardinalLolzy

He's a dickhead and now no-one reasonable will want to be seen to agree with him, because the internet knows that agreeing with someone on one issue means you automatically agree on every issue, whether you say you do or not.

I'm GC and I think grass is generally green and Laurence Fox is a tedious troll and there are two sexes.

This!

He’s no friend to women - he’s saying this because he’s a professional contrarian. If all the other candidates were firmly GC he’d be fully TWAW.

ListeningQuietly · 19/03/2021 19:32

Laurence Fox is an entitled twat
he is anti "woke" because it amuses him
NOT because he gives a shit about women's rights

It depresses me when I see people lauding rightwingers
just because they call out TWAW

FFS
Rightwingers in the US are anti trans
but they are also anti
abortion
maternity pay
antenatal care
childcare
equal pay
and a few other important things

DO NOT fall into the trap
please

flashbac · 19/03/2021 19:31

I can't believe what I'm reading here. Really?
Why undermine the GC movement by siding with such a character? Do you really think he gives a shit?

CardinalLolzy · 19/03/2021 19:28
