As a candidate for London mayor Laurence Fox has answered five questions on women's rights and it is a breath of fresh air. Highlights being:

First of all, the police cannot protect what it does not define. We acknowledge that women are adult human females. They are vulnerable as a result of biological sex.

Acknowledge that The Equality Act 2010 provides legislative protection for women by virtue of their sex. We will enforce it without fear or favour and protect the rights of women to single sex spaces.

Ring fence funding for single-sex refuges and support services

Lets hope this puts pressure on the other candidates

@loveyouradvice

There are lots of insults on here ... not very helpful (and rather reminiscent of other tactics)....

And almost no discussion about whether we think this will have any impact or what its implications are.... I'm hoping it will put it on the agenda for discussion and questions more widely.... Wait to see

"not very helpful (and rather reminiscent of other tactics)...."

Absolutely.

"I'm hoping it will put it on the agenda for discussion and questions more widely"

Me too - I just want some light shone on it all

Lots of accusations being thrown around. Very little evidence provided.

I agree that LF is a contrarian, but I don't think he wants to kill all Jews or round up people into concentration camps (which is what calling him a Nazi or far right fascist implies).

Oh great now I'm paranoid. I'm not trying to cryptically say I support DT.
Quite the opposite. Just it isn't unfeasible that these people get into power.

GNCQ · 19/03/2021 21:24

Capital T obviously.

GNCQ · 19/03/2021 21:23

It's almost like D. trump trying to win president of America....

zoemum2006 · 19/03/2021 21:19

Laurence Fox? LOL

Mayoral candidate LOL...

what an attention seeking little twat.

I can't bear that there's this market for people to say obnoxious stuff because controversy and offensiveness sells.

Velouria · 19/03/2021 21:12

I suppose I'll watch his trigerrnometry interview, despite finding them quite annoying.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 19/03/2021 21:07

So is question time thing the basis of the accusation of him being racist?

Imnobody4 · 19/03/2021 21:05

For heavens sake he's not going to win, however if he gives Sian Berry a run for her money I'm cool. He could be effective in exposing the mealy mouthed hypocrisy of the other candidates on women's rights and freedom of speech.
Personally I think none of the candidates are electable. Sadiq Khan has been a real disappointment but maybe Shaun Bailey will be persuaded to take a different stance to TWAW.
Do they have a debate?

Velouria · 19/03/2021 21:03

What has he done? I remember a furore, but took no notice.

Highwind · 19/03/2021 21:02

I think politicians need a sharp shock for them to understand that erasing and selling out women is no vote winner. I can think of no better way than LF snapping up Mayor of London.

It's a protest vote and I hope he wins just to wake up the rest of the political parties.... but he won't.

LunaHeather · 19/03/2021 21:01

@LizzieSiddal

Why do we need to provide an “explanation”?
It would just help because this thread is making me worry I've missed something vital that I can't start to research because I don't know what it is.

I'm not demanding, just politely asking, but I see this thread is going nowhere so I'll go and watch TV now. I'm restricting my MN time to keep sane!

FightingTheFoo · 19/03/2021 20:58

I thought LF was being unfairly maligned until I read his interview with Camilla Long last year. Unfortunately I agree he is no friend to women (see screenshot below) and while he does probably believe what he's spouting I think he's partly doing it for attention. There are better allies to women we can look to.

LunaHeather · 19/03/2021 20:56

I feel like we have a few posters saying he's dreadful but with no explanation.

I was so relieved when Don't Divide Us was set up.

ChristinaXYZ · 19/03/2021 20:48

He works with Don't Divide Us so to dismiss him as racist is simplistic. Not agreeing with that woman on Question Time does not make him racist. You might not agree with the Don't Divide Us approach but him supporting Calvin Robinson and Don't Divide Us does not make him racist in and of itself.

7catsandcounting · 19/03/2021 20:44

We could really do without him being on our side. He's a nightmare of a man. He's the sort of person who makes me worry about being GC and whether or not I am in fact "on the wrong side of history". We have to find a way of separating ourselves from these rightwing nutters. It needs to be made clear. They're not suddenly on the side of women! They're bigots. We cannot risk being associated. Just as the trans umbrella includes a vast number of views and types of trans, so must the GC umbrella. It's really dangerous to be in the same camp as Laurence Fox.

LizzieSiddal · 19/03/2021 20:39

No, just no.

He’s a nasty, racist twat.

LunaHeather · 19/03/2021 20:37

"Calling someone right wing, alt right or racist is pretty meaningless as slurs at this point, so I would quite like to know what has lead people to want to describe him with these words."

Yes. And the same people are happy to call me a coconut.

Twistiesandshout · 19/03/2021 20:36

Which of his views are so offensive? Genuine question. I don't know much about him but like his responses above.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 19/03/2021 20:34

Laurence Fox is a twat

PaleBlueMoonlight · 19/03/2021 20:33

He came across well on Triggernometry, like someone who had thought things through and cared. I can’t remember much of what he said, but he seemed to have reached a range of mainstream views, some of which I agreed with and some of which I disagreed with or in respect of which I felt he he missed the mark. He seemed sincere and he is clearly willing to stand up and do something. I can’t actually remember much about what he stands for (I guess I’ll have to listen to it again), but I am interested to know what his problematic views/actions are and why so many on this thread want to dismiss him? Calling someone right wing, alt right or racist is pretty meaningless as slurs at this point, so I would quite like to know what has lead people to want to describe him with these words.

ShimmyShimmyYa · 19/03/2021 20:25

he's not alt-right ffs; he's not a fucking nazi!

honestly, we complain when TRAs call us fascists...

LunaHeather · 19/03/2021 20:24
@LunaHeather that's a statistical likelihood, doesn't make him any less racist.
I think there's many women of colour who won't feel it's a slap in the face.

I am now wondering if I have missed something though...
