Daily acts of feminism - a thread for ideas

Pinched the idea shamelessly from another thread after an hour of speechless rage reading the papers and Twatter. I need to DO something.

I pledge to do something positive every day to stand up for women. Deeds not words.

Today was taken care of for me - a subscription to The Radical Notion for Mother's Day. I'm also going to fill out the VAWG consultation.

Thought might be good to share anything else we come across here, so anyone in need of ideas could check?

@Carriemac

Today's act - use this reply when asked for my pronouns

"Obviously when you're talking to me you'll use my name. When you're talking about me, it's really not my business to police your language."

Love it. Filing that one away.

Back on the case! I've signed that petition, dug for Sonia Appleby (GIDs whistleblower) and just written a very frank response to Labour about exactly why I'm not renewing my membership and spoiled my ballot last week.

There is another petition on the petition board or if you check G lineham website requesting IPSOS to report offenders by sex and stop saying ‘woman’ abused x when it is not a woman.

Just signed and put the link on the petitions board! Wink

Confession: I've been utterly disheartened and avoiding the news over the last week or so. Feeling very dispirited and need to get the fire back.

Have started by signing the Sex Matters open letter.

If you are complaining - move it up a level. Moaning on here/to your mates about the BBC? Actually send a proper complaint. If you sent a complaint (or several) and the answers are poor and you're gathering evidence combine it in a larger letter and make an official complaint to the top and say next stop OfCom and then, if the answers are still rotten complain to OfCom with your dossier. Similarly move the complaints up a level if you're writing about the behaviour of a charity (gather evidence and move on to the charity commission), or have you had the brush off with a poor response to a freedom on information request to the police, school or government department. complain again to them and then use the office of the information commissioner who can and does make rulings in the public's favour. These actions can work.

Wight-Dash looks like a charity worth supporting.

I shall be doing some digging for Keira Bell. There's an update on her case for those interested in searching. Her legal team have got a lot on!

I am the proud new owner of a This Witch Doesn’t Burn t-shirt. I shall be taking it for its inaugural outing round town later. Be sure to say hello if you see me!

Cuntysnark · 17/04/2021 10:16

My first daily act is a dig in Maya’s new garden.

Swashbuckled · 17/04/2021 08:17

Great thread.

I really like the pp’s suggested response to the referring of “girls” (usually used by certain men to refer to the secretaries at my place of work). I can also see me using it with comic effect if the situation calls for that approach.

When I thought about using it, however, I imagined the man apologising and replacing with “ladies”. Does anyone have any ideas what to say to that?

For Women Scotland update on case against Scottish Government redefining "woman" to include men

Having spoken to our lawyers and considered the financial implications and the appetite for this case, we have decided that we will appeal the decision on the Gender Representation on Public Boards Act. Our legal team is confident that the judgement is legally challengeable.

We have already seen this law cited by lobbyists hoping to roll back women's rights, and we have seen an MP claim that she would have no issue with a “gender balanced” board made up of 50% men and 50% transwomen. The Scottish Government also take the view that men who self-identify as women, are women - and this will be the basis of future policies. Therefore, we feel we have a duty to Scottish women to continue to fight: we cannot leave this law on the statute books to the detriment of women.

We would rather we did not have to seek redress from the courts, but as the Scottish Government continues to refuse to engage with women, we have little choice. Unchallenged, we feel this would only embolden those who wish to undermine Equality Act 2010 - we understand that the Scottish Green Party are now demanding the adoption of the flawed Yogyakarta Principles into Scots Law.

A reclaiming motion was formally marked on 9th April .

Garden still open for volunteer diggers.

Thanks @OldCrone

@WarriorN

And the baroness replies so quickly, she's amazing!
I know this is an old post but just reading now. I've never had a single reply from the Baroness!! What have I done? I wrote to loads of Lords and Baronesses after the MOMA bill and had some lovely replies, but nothing from her. And I have written to her before.

On my to do list contact my candidates for May election to Scottish Govt about their position on women's rights.

SmallPug · 10/04/2021 08:52

Someone may have already suggested this, but sign up to updates from Sex Matters (sex-matters.org/) - and donate if you have the money to do so. I have a regular donation to Sex Matters, Fair Play for Women, and The Centre for Women's Justice. I donate to Nia too. I also ask for donations to such organisations instead of presents.

334bu · 10/04/2021 08:47

Going to email my MP about DV bill.

Scout2016 · 10/04/2021 08:35

*headlining

Scout2016 · 10/04/2021 08:34

I messaged a local event to ask why their line up was nearly all male. Be interested to see what / if they reply. 16 acts announced so far and only one, low down the bill, is a woman.
Two acts have women as backing singers / dancers which is not the same as they aren't "in the band" band members, if you see what I mean. That's not meant as a criticism of them, just I know it's hard for women to get to front bands or get equal billing.
Ashamed to say the lineup imbalance might not have occurred to me if I hadn't heard it being discussed on the radio the other day, and how hard it is for women to get these gigs or get near headling. Someone has set up a website listing available female acts so promoters can't argue they couldn't find any.
