Oh my.

'When I first heard of the vigil for Sarah on Clapham Common I was looking forward to attending – it felt good to be able to ‘do something’ and express my love for Sarah and my sorrow for what has happened to her. Less than a day later, I decided not to attend, as have many of her friends. I can’t speak for all of them, but my reason for not attending is this: my friend’s tragic death has been hijacked. It is not a tribute to her any more, it’s about something else – and I don’t like what it has become.'
Her abduction and murder is not, in my opinion, a symptom of a sexist, dangerous society. When something awful like this happens there is a rush to look for reasons and apportion blame. If the suspect police officer in custody is eventually tried and found guilty of her murder, then I will hold him alone responsible. I will not be blaming ‘men’ or ‘the police’ for the actions of one individual. There will always be the odd psychopath out there – male or female – and there can be no accounting for that fact.

'Sarah had many wonderful men in her life. Several of them were absolutely instrumental in the hunt for her, raising awareness online and in the local area, and out physically searching for her at the beginning. They are just as horrified as everyone else by what has happened.'

'I don’t think Sarah would have wanted them, or men in general, to be smeared with the same brush as her attacker. Most people, and indeed men, are good. They would never wish harm on anyone else, let alone attack or kill someone. Despite what has happened to Sarah allegedly at the hands of this man, I will continue to believe that'

Whoever wrote this- Yes, yes, yes.
Reading it makes me want to weep.

I truly feel so depressed, as a woman it's like 2021 has become 1921. Instead of feeling free, I genuinely feel like men hate women and police men are on the side of the abusers and women haters.

This is why I don't think it matters that the focus of what the Vigil was meant to be has been derailed somewhat.

Sarah was murdered as a result of our patriarchal, misogynistic society. This is core to what happened to her and needs to be protested against.

If she begins a new and much needed women's revolution - that is a good thing isn't it?

Arborea · 13/03/2021 23:00

I hope this thread doesn't get pulled but there are a lot of posts that pose a risk of prejudicing the trial so I have reported them. The very last thing her family and friends need is the trial collapsing.

Spiked on line. NOT the most reliable source, for anything.

Thank you Nuclear

Originally only the handful of women leading the vigil (reading poems and leading the chants) were on the bandstand.

The only reason they stepped onto the bandstand was so they could be heard and seen by the crowds. Someone does need to lead events like this and they have to stand up high to be seen and heard.

It wasn't disrespectful to be on the bandstand. There were no flowers or candles on the bandstand itself, only on the slopes leading up to it, and most protestors were taking great care not to tread on them.

The police jumped onto the bandstand to try to arrest the women who were reading poetry and leading chants, which led the (mostly male) press to surge after them followed by the protestors at the front trying to protect the women.

At some point the cry went out that the police had given permission to go onto the bandstand. I believe this to be true as police did nothing to block the two entrances to the bandstand (they did later) and were doing nothing to discourage it or ask people not to. I don't know what they were thinking in making that decision.

If not for the police's actions, no one would have stepped onto the bandstand except the handful of women leading the vigil.

@NuclearDH

One of Sarah’s friends has done a blog post saying her memory has been hijacked by people with their own agenda. That this is not what she would have wanted.
This is exactly what many of us are saying here. Can you link it? I'd like to read it.

I'm going to have to step away from this soon, I'm getting so angry.
HOW DARE THEY?
If, heaven forbid, I was ever in Sarah's family and friend's position and this happened. I wouldn't cope.
'I AM SARAH' t-shirts??? FFS. Who are these idiots?

fioreun · 13/03/2021 22:53

It wasn't a parade in Glasgow. It was a gathering of Ranger's fans celebrating a big win that had just happened. The Police chose how to respond to an event that was not preplanned. Just like tonight.

Agree that Sarah must be remembered.

The trouble is the vigil and the police have now become the story not the death of Sarah. That can be the trouble with large memorial gatherings. The gathering becomes the news and the point of the gathering gets lost
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this

So little respect towards Sarah and her family as they asked for this not to go ahead.

Whenthesunshines · 13/03/2021 22:50

If Sarah's family asked people not to go why did they?

Is this true? If it is then the whole thing is a a fking disgrace.

Whenthesunshines · 13/03/2021 22:49

Someone wearing an “I AM SARAH” t shirt ffs , how dare they.
This made my stomach turn.

OldRailer · 13/03/2021 22:48

Yes,the extinction rebellion activity is enabled.

Coffeeandrev · 13/03/2021 22:47

@Whenthesunshines

overnight Maybe something has been happening for the last 13 months or so and there are laws in place This.
If Sarah's family asked people not to go why did they? Totally disrespectful. Feelings are high but this isn't the way.

Yes, there is always a danger that mass gatherings of any nature get highjacked by gobshites.

Yes you are right.

The point has got lost here.

The day time was so dignified. This chaos will be the news now.

Exactly, it becomes the domain of people latching onto something to push their own agenda.

Someone wearing an “I AM SARAH” t shirt ffs , how dare they.

No concern for the individual or the family just an agenda (or to be seen)

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 13/03/2021 22:45

I think as the details of the case come out Sarah's story will very sadly be amplified and shared for some time. We cannot let this pass.

There is no legal requirement to wear a mask outdoors
Imagine if it was Meghan and she hadn't wore a mask. Can picture the headlines.
OvaHere · 13/03/2021 22:45

@Elbels

I'm really torn here.

I was there in the day time and it was incredibly peaceful, poignant and inclusive. The bandstand was off limits, because why would you go up there?

No one said anything, everyone paid their respects with flowers, stood and then left.

It feels, from what I've read, this evening has become incredibly politicised, and the original purpose has been overtaken. Even the fact that people were on the bandstand seems really disrespectful. Maybe I'm wrong.

From what I can gather there were some in attendance with agendas other than just paying quiet respects at a vigil. Unfortunately any kind of night time event attracts this element now.

It was handled very badly by the Met Police though.

Whenthesunshines · 13/03/2021 22:45

@Artesia

*@Whenthesunshines* - but why was the Glasgow parade allowed to go ahead as an organised event when this wasn't? Is it because it's more important for men to gather to celebrate winning a game than for women to gather to mourn and peacefully protest against male violence?
When was the Glasgow parade organised? Was it done with only a few days notice? Whether we like it or not, police need to crowd control and for that they need resources in place. That takes time. I wonder if things would have been different if the organisers had planned it for next weekend say?
overnightangel · 13/03/2021 22:45

@NoSquirrels

The police should have been there in order to exclude men from the vicinity.

The ‘press’ should have sent gender photographers.

The police should have had female officers in the inner circle near the bandstand. Keep the male officers in the outer circle excluding men.

Awful.

No words🤦🏻‍♀️
