I've got my paper census - remind me what I do?

Having read a thread on here about how to register a protest without upsetting the quality of data collected, I ordered a paper census and now can't find the thread Blush.

Please can someone remind what I was supposed to do? Or should I hang in until after the judicial review anyway? Sorry, I'm struggling to keep up on this one.

@minchinfin

I've done exactly that today - I had to reword the template letter a bit
It generally looks better to reword template letters anyway. Doing so shows that you thought about it and didn't just knee-jerk or bandwagon-jump.

In case anyone is confused about why the Census action is going ahead in spite of FPFW getting ONS to change their guidance about the sex question...

  1. FPFW have forced ONS to ask for 'legal sex' (i.e. as stated on birth certificate or GRA) in relation to the sex question, rather than gender identity. Which is brilliant.
  2. BUT we need to return to biological sex as stated on ones birth certificate. Nothing else makes any sense in statistical terms.
  3. This campaign is intended to keep the pressure on. It's important.

PLEASE: ask for a paper copy - either 1 per household or 1 per person.
Complete the form. Leave the gender identity question blank.
Print out and sign the template letter on the Sex in the Census website: sexinthecensus.org/on-census-night/
Include it with your Census form and send it in.

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 18/03/2021 13:54

so i got my paper one today - but only one? Don't I need one for each family member?

The norm is one form (or online return) for the whole household - you don't need a form per person.

How are we meant to be filling it out now?

The judicial review win means that people must answer question 3, about their sex, according to their birth certificate (or gender recognition certificate).

The letter to send with the paper copy sexinthecensus.org/on-census-night/ is about registering a protest that it should be your actual sex, regardless of GRC. The reason for making it a letter is that comments written on the form will simply be ignored; forms will be computer-read and provided your answer can be worked out from the content of the boxes anything extraneous will be ignored.

It's not like an election where a human sees every form and any spoiled ballot goes to the returning officer.

So there's no point writing comments on the form; you need to send the covering letter, because it requires a response.

If you ask for a paper copy and it doesn't arrive in time, just wait - it will - and if it doesn't a census officer will almost certainly visit to see why your household hasn't completed the form, and will be able to give you a paper copy on the spot.

It's not in any sense an offence to fill the form out late - you might (in normal times anyway) be away on holiday on the day and provided you fill it out as soon as you can thereafter that's fine. So saying to the census officer "I requested a paper form but it hasn't come yet" is absolutely fine.

minchinfin · 18/03/2021 13:01

ignore me, I've just seen I can fill it out for up to 5 people

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 18/03/2021 11:43

I'm not seeing the new letter at all either in the bottom of the screen or the take action option 🤷‍♀️

WookeyHole · 18/03/2021 09:52

Actually there's another gremlin on the website. If you go from the homepage > 'From March 1st' or 'On March 21st' via buttons near the bottom of the home page you get the new letter, but if you go via 'take action' in the top menu bar, and then the same two choices you get the old letter. Unless that's my cookies?

I'd missed the good news yesterday that the ONS have conceded the case and accepted the interim ruling!

The sex in the census website has updated their letter, but I think it's got a typo. Based on the text I do think it would still be worth sending in a paper copy. I'm going to see if there's a way of making contact and check if it's a typo - perhaps you can let me know what you think? I might be reading it wrong?

This is a screenshot from the updated letter - shouldn't the word sex be after the word biological in bold?

I've got my paper census - remind me what I do?

Wasn’t it the case that sufficient people put Jedi that it had to be registered as an official religion???

If so, if we all put gender critical as our religion, wouldn’t that give us some protections under a protected characteristic of religious belief?

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 17/03/2021 17:07

Mine arrived today, I requested it abiit a week ago.

Door knockers you say? Mmmm, there will be some interesting door step conversations occurring I reckon.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 17/03/2021 17:04

Toffee
I ordered a paper version.

DH (picks up card) shall I fill this in online then?
Me - no I ordered paper
DH - only takes ten mins, why ... ohhhh... are you going to do... some kind or protest?
Me - maybe...
DH - alrighty...

Are you in my house?! Grin

MiddlesexGirl · 17/03/2021 16:25

^^ This. You don't need multiple copies of the main form but individuals can request their own individual form and if you have more than five normal residents or three visitors then you need continuation forms for those additional people.

AmberItsACertainty · 17/03/2021 11:05

@Zeugma

From comments on here I gathered that every adult can request a paper copy, even if they live in the same household. I ordered one and DH also ordered one separately - we intended to fill them both in and include a copy of the letter each.

My paper copy arrived (after quite a wait); his hasn't. He's re-requested one but can anyone confirm that it's permissible for each adult in a household to complete separate forms?

Thanks

It says in the form you can order an "additional person form" for people who don't want to give their details to the person filling in the main form.
MummBraTheEverLeaking · 17/03/2021 10:53

It's arrived, hooray!

MiddlesexGirl · 17/03/2021 09:26

Yes DH can do online.
Anyone who does an individual return will have their answers overwriting anything the householder (the one who fills in the main form) may have done.

WookeyHole · 16/03/2021 19:22

That's interesting @Gurufloof I ordered four but haven't actually opened the envelope yet. Hope they're all in there!

I haven't yet looked it up, but does anyone know, if I do paper, could DH still do online? Not sure he'll be to chuffed if I have to force him to spend time with a pen and paper!

I'm also wondering if it would be ok or wrong to add a letter the the DC's? I think probably wrong.

@MsFogi

I ordered one a couple of weeks ago - still no sign. I wonder if they have had quite a lot of requests and are struggling to get through them Grin.
Mine took about 10 days from ordering to deliver, I'm annoyed I ordered several and only got one. So I'm going to try ordering yet again.
TheFleegleHasLanded · 16/03/2021 18:52

@Zeugma

I'm going to wait until the full judicial review hearing happens on the 18th. Then I'll follow whatever advice is given over including the letter with my paper copy.

Census day isn't till the 21st. I'm not filling anything in until then.

This. Thank you Zeugma

There is no rush to do anything. I might even wait for a census door knocker to turn up. Our paper copies have not arrived yet and as I understand it the chaser-uppers will be able to give you a paper copy there and then.

LunaHeather · 16/03/2021 17:57

So the consensus on the census

Don't say non binary either?

WookeyHole · 16/03/2021 17:55

Yes, that's correct in terms of consensus: complete the compulsory sex question and leave the gender question blank. Consensus is not to enter any alternative in the gender q to avoid contributing to any headline stats such as number of people who have completed it and number who have put something different to their sex.

It seems sensible to wait for the judicial review before printing the letter, just it case it gets updated as a result.

oxalisRed · 16/03/2021 16:47

Got my paper copy yesterday, just looked at it. There's no guidance with the paper version, so it doesn't show the guidance change from last week.

So is the concensus here that I fill in the compulsory sex question and leave the voluntary gender question blank? (although I'm tempted to put No Gender, in line with No Religion for the earlier religion question)

Should I still print off the Sex in the Census letter and include that? Or are we waiting for the judicial review? A bit confused....Blush

Outbutnotoutout · 16/03/2021 15:47

Place mark

I have filled in, now awaiting my letter
