Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why don't we centre women?

This is a feminism board but 99% of the threads are about trans people or gender identity.

What about domestic violence, FGM, the gender pay gap, period poverty, and representation in the workplace?

It seems like this board believes the only threat to women is trans people.

Am I missing something?

There are threads on DV pretty often. And it's not at all unusual to have ones about education or things like benefits, or motherhood.

Not all of these have a lot of unity of opinion about them, even on FWR.

However, trans issues are very emergent at the moment, in the way these other things aren't, both with regard to the law and the science, and social views.

DV, by contrast, isn't so controversial, most people in society think it's wrong, and there aren't any major legal proposals going on that would affect it much at the moment, or new research. So it gets brought up when something happens like a publicised incident, or someone wants to talk about it general, and maybe there is some discussion of the best way to prevent it or deal with perpetrators etc.

Emergent topics, especially ones that will affect whole systems, are always going to be discussed a lot.

I am so thrilled this thread was made! I was going to do a bit of a bumpette of the t-shirt n a couple of days anyway, but this serves brilliantly, and may be seen by a totally different set of people.

I want to get Hibo to 500 t-shirts sold!

Buzzinwithbez · 03/03/2021 18:32

I hadn't realised it would only be available for a limited time. I've just placed an order for mine.
Better get on it, op! Wink

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/03/2021 18:32

There's a court case going on today about women's prisons,. Should we be discussing that?

Yes, I believe it's where biological males being housed with women may be against those women's human rights?

PotholeParadies · 03/03/2021 18:27

Buzz excellent point! The t-shirt is on sale for only another six days and Hibo says the proceeds could fund her work for a year.

[quote PotholeParadies]Did you know that the weekend before last, Hibo Wardere, FGM survivor and international campaigner, was harassed for being transphobic?

This is the thread about it.

This is my last thread about FGM in this forum, before that, where we collated a list of charities to donate to, in order to fight it. Please have a read, and donate to one if you can afford it.

Also, there is a T shirt available that supports Hibo Wardere's work. It centers women and would be a very good investment for a very important cause.

The ones already mentioned are on the first page

OP feel free to start threads about any of the issues you list and you will no doubt get replies. However, the pressing issue is that if we lose the ability to define "women" with reference to human biology we will not be able to tackle any of the issues you list.

SqeakyHindge · 03/03/2021 18:09

You could also venture outside FWR and look under health: women’s health, money matters, body and soul, being a parent etc etc

Lots of discussion about women issues that’s why mumsnet have allocated forum sections. Otherwise FWR would be chaos.

Which issues are of particular interest to you and do you need help with search function

Grin Oh I don't know, you are asking about specific topics, obviously you could save a lot of time doing your own research. HTH

I used to think the same. I get it now.

Funny you mention FGM. You'll be aware of the attacks on Hibo Wardere for daring to speak up about female genital mutilation? - apparently she wasn't inclusive enough referring to female.

TeaAndStrumpets · 03/03/2021 17:56

Nice try. Feel free to use the advanced search function for specific topics.

7Days · 03/03/2021 17:56

Though - if I'm wrong please explain. It would be a great weight off my mind

7Days · 03/03/2021 17:55

And I've explained why it's impossible these days to address those issues, without referring to the campaigners that are not only setting back progress but actively undoing what has been done.

Have a read.

yeahbutnaw · 03/03/2021 17:52

@7Days I listed some in my original post. Have a read.

NonnyMouse1337 · 03/03/2021 17:51

Feel free to start threads on topics that concern you. That's what I do.

P.S. FGM campaigners and groups are being harassed by gender identity ideologues for not including males, women in prison (who are likely to have experiences of sexual violence and domestic abuse) are being housed with rapists, males are taking women's places on company Boards and of course they enjoy the lifelong privilege of not having to experience the sort of detriments to their pay in the same way that women do (such as missing out on opportunities or pay rises due to maternity), and women are being dehumanised with terms around their reproductive issues (calling women menstruators or people with endometriosis - all of which obscures the facts around the realities of our lives as women).
I'd say these issues should deeply concern anyone who claims to centre women.

7Days · 03/03/2021 17:50

@yeahbutnaw

Can anyone share a link to Threads where there have been discussions on women's issues that don't involve gender identity?

I'd love to have a read.

What issues concern you most?
Svrider · 03/03/2021 17:50

There's a thread over there in feminism about a women's DV shelter
It's been closed down and funds diverted to a trans shelter
It's that the kind of thread you mean OP?

WeeBisom · 03/03/2021 17:50

I think the reason there is so much focus on trans issues is because women are suddenly finding that the concept of 'woman', which has always meant 'adult human female', is being changed from under our feet without our consent or input to mean a mental state which can be instantiated in the minds of males. Given that female people are oppressed by male people, the existential threat this poses to feminism and women's rights is huge. There has not yet been a civil rights movement where the oppressor unilaterally declares they are a member of the oppressed group, and from then on is treated as such. Quite simply, we can't organise as women for the rights of women if we don't have firmly in place what a woman is. I've seen post-modern feminist proposals that suggest feminism collapses into a 'be kind to everyone' movement which aims to remove oppression from all of humanity, but my worry with this is that women will be sidelined in their own rights movement.
