Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why don't we centre women?

This is a feminism board but 99% of the threads are about trans people or gender identity.

What about domestic violence, FGM, the gender pay gap, period poverty, and representation in the workplace?

It seems like this board believes the only threat to women is trans people.

Am I missing something?

@PotholeParadies

Nothing wrong with a bit of feminist rage. Every time an author gets 'cancelled' or someone pisses me off on here, a book gets bought, or a fiver gets put into a crowdfunder.

I keep hearing we're funded by the American far right or something. I wish they'd hurry up with funding me! Cheques lost in the post, are they?

Yes I pre-ordered Milli Hill's period book for my daughter off the back of it too... Looking forward to reading it with her.

@Buzzinwithbez

I used to think the same. I get it now.

Funny you mention FGM. You'll be aware of the attacks on Hibo Wardere for daring to speak up about female genital mutilation? - apparently she wasn't inclusive enough referring to female.

Yes. She had to actually make a vide to say 'I support women and girls. Get over it' as she was being accused of not being inclusive.

The girls and women who suffer from SEX based violence cannot identify out of their SEX.

People are threatening to erase what the word WOMAN actually means.

If the word WOMAN means 'anyone who say they are', it becomes meaningless and we cannot fight for our SEX BASED rights.

Gender ideology is the biggest threat on this at the moment. So that is why there are so many threads.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/03/2021 22:55

We absolutely centre women, that's the problem for OP and their friends.

sonnysunshine · 03/03/2021 22:54

I agree 100%. I am completely seen as Terftastic outside of MN. And will fight to the bitter end for women's spaces. However, I wish the passion and drive for that subject could be spread to other equally as pressing topics.

2Rebecca · 03/03/2021 22:49

Agree. If you want to discuss a particular issue start a thread on it, rather than sounding as though you've just come to tell women off for not womaning the way you want them too.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 03/03/2021 22:44

There are plenty of threads.

Feminism is a topic with at least 4 more subtopics. If you can't find any, then you should look harder.

If you're interested in or want to talk about something specific then you can start a new thread just like you did here.

And yes the "trans" "threat" is significant and it affects all those things you mention once policy and law makers decide they don't know what a woman is anymore.

How can you combat discrimination, sexism etc when you can't define what a woman is? How can you make policies directed at women, to be beneficial to women when you won't use the word woman ? Or mother.. or whatever else they take an offence with.

Gender pay gap? Discrimination in the work place? Lack of promotions? All it takes to sort out is for a few higher ups to identify as women. Just 2 days a week should do it.

Crack on with starting threads on any feminist issue you like OP.

Coffeeandcocopops · 03/03/2021 22:38

The main threat to women is the erasure of women. FGM, DV etc are all linked. We need to know what a women is before we can talk about female genitalia mutation. However if you care to look back there are lots of posts on various issues.

Buzzinwithbez · 03/03/2021 22:35

@PotholeParadies

This thread has truly gladdened my heart. Counting Buzz who might otherwise have missed the deadline, I think that's five extra t-shirts sold. We're just starting the second and final week and we're already over half the way to 500 sold!
Yes I was hovering on the fence but your prompt combined with a bit of feminist rage and wanting to show my support prompted me to buy one.

I see endless threads that discuss these issues on here 🙄🙄

I think hibiscus is good in a cocktail.

BlackWaveComing · 03/03/2021 20:49

On the off chance the OP is genuine in her 'concern', it's not remotely the only issue of concern for this feminist.

I'd suggest spending some time, OP, thinking about this analogy: can one deal with racism, if we claim to be colorblind? No?

So can we deal with sexism while ignoring or minimising the reality and impact of sex? No?

If we need to accept and understand the role of bio sex in our quest to understand and deal with sexism, is it helpful to instead demand women stop talking about sex as the basis for the discrimination we experience? No?

Can you begin to understand why a movement (TRA) which actively seeks to deny women the right to define, organize by and discuss sex as the root of sexism might come in for quite a lot of discussion by feminists?

Right. Off to read about how we've got an alleged rapist in our (non-UK) Cabinet, hope that's feminist enough, OP.

CousinKrispy · 03/03/2021 20:40

There are always some very thought provoking threads on surrogacy and similar issues underway.

TwistedEyeOfHorus · 03/03/2021 20:35

We do centre women.

When I scroll along and read, the topics are all approached with concern for females at the heart.

Foggyday124 · 03/03/2021 20:31

Not hibiscus!!!

Foggyday124 · 03/03/2021 20:31

Will get a Hibiscus t-shirt too, thank you for sharing the info!

yourhairiswinterfire · 03/03/2021 19:50

Going to get a T from Hibo too! Marvellous, inspiring woman. Remains so classy even when being abused by hideous, toxic bullies.

BarbaraofKent · 03/03/2021 19:47

What about domestic violence, FGM, the gender pay gap, period poverty, and representation in the workplace?

Um, who is it that is affected by these issues? Is there a way of identifying them in the human population? How? What is that group of humans called? Are we allowed to name that group of humans without others feeling 'excluded'?

donquixotedelamancha · 03/03/2021 19:44

It's disappointing that you think the only threat to women is trans people and gender identity.

You asked for an explanation and then immediately mis-characterised the first post offering a detailed explanation of what women's issues were being discussed.

I don't think there is any point in replying to a post which just wants to complain about feminists doing feminism wrong. Feel free to start a thread about the feminist issues which matter to you.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 03/03/2021 19:25

Just got Hibo's T, thank you for the link!
I'd missed it as am on Twitter holiday.

EachDubh · 03/03/2021 18:56

To identify and discuss women's rights you first need a clear, robust definition of what a woman is. If that definition changes or becomes unclear then the issues change as well. So it is important in this day and age that we, as women, establish a clear meaning of what a woman is and, as importantly, what a woman isn't.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 03/03/2021 18:40

Women's rights? So do you think male born rapists should be locked up with female prisoners? Do you think women on FWR should just turn the other way?

PheasantPlucker1 · 03/03/2021 18:38

That t-shirt is brilliant, thanks for the links!
