Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why don't we centre women?

This is a feminism board but 99% of the threads are about trans people or gender identity.

What about domestic violence, FGM, the gender pay gap, period poverty, and representation in the workplace?

It seems like this board believes the only threat to women is trans people.

Am I missing something?

Because I saw that very same bloke arguing with MNHQ on twitter today, although I didn't pay attention to what he was arguing about.*

I'm not sure, but MNGQ did a great job of explaining that they were happy the surrogacy board had plenty of robust conversations from different sides of the debate so no need to shut things down.

PotholeParadies · 04/03/2021 17:27

I wish I could tell you, but I don't have mine yet.

If you click about, it gives the size of each in inches and I fretted a lot about which one was right. I got the tape-measure out and measured round the biscuit-norkage, and then plumped on the size of caution.

TheBuffster · 04/03/2021 17:20

Does anyone have a t shirt and know how the sizes come up? I've got lots of biscuit lockdown weight but don't know if XL is enormous.

AmericanSlang · 04/03/2021 17:17

Thanks to all who linked to Hibo's fundraiser, the harassment she was getting on Twitter for focusing on women was unbelievable, but also an illustration of the bullshit around intersectional feminism and inclusivity. Basically feminists can't win - if we try to discuss any issues around women (eg pregnancy, birth, infertility, FGM, PCOS literally anything) we are told you can't talk about that, you're excluding trans people. If we try to talk about how discussing women's issues is being shut down by trans ideology, we are told off for always talking about trans and not about other issues.

Bugger! That was such fun to type, but was aimed at the wrong poster!

My most sincere apologies for the, at te time, fully intended slur on your intellect @7days

And look! The real OPs username is just begging for a snigger! But my heart's not in it!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/03/2021 15:16

Be fair to @7Days it's Thursday, first post was on Wednesday. Maybe they'll be back on Sunday, whilst 'chilling'

7Days · 04/03/2021 14:49

Brilliant, I'll buy one on payday

PotholeParadies · 04/03/2021 13:24

Six t-shirts sold for Hibo!

Roll up, roll up. It's what everyone might be wearing next time there's a Filia conference!

Gcnq · 04/03/2021 12:52

To be fair, if trans activists weren't so hellbent on wrecking women's rights, there wouldn't be so many threads about it on here, a women's rights forum.

PurpleHoodie · 04/03/2021 12:34

Thanks for this thread.

I wouldn't have known about Hibo's t-shirts.

Brilliant news. I hope she sells out.

TheBuffster · 04/03/2021 12:31

Off the top of my head there's an interesting thread on play parks and spaces for girls and another on women using the outdoors. I've also seen several ones on reproductive rights.
Your options are find one of these or start your own.
However, to centre women you have to know what one is. I think there are several boards still thrashing it out, as the dictionary definition is not inclusive enough for some.

What nonsense, OP. Lots of threads on other topics, can you just not be arsed to even look for yourself? I'm not doing your work for you.

Thecatonthemat · 04/03/2021 10:47

Women on here campaign endlessly on all matters that relate to women. We are beginning to resent the energy spent on explaining why we need eg women only spaces to people that have come on here with the main aim of disruption. Hope you have contributed to the many fundraisers that exist for women’s projects and justice in the courts.

PhoenixandtheRug · 04/03/2021 10:26

What a shock. Women criticised for robustly defending our rights and not doing enough to stop male abusing us in the myriad of ways men have found to do so.

sanluca · 04/03/2021 09:15

I don't know why, maybe it is because anything that has to do with womens rights when based on being biologically female always gets painted as being anti trans, OP? I mean, domestic violence and refuges: defunded because adult human females were the biggest group of users and that was anti trans. Women not wanted mixed sex sports and mixed sex prisons: anti trans. How to get more women into politics: discussion with four women and two transwomen, probably to provide the non biological barriers point of view like wearing high heeled shoes and to always shave your legs ( refering to India W here)? Or that the biggest challenge as a woman is to decide what to wear that day, quoting CJenner.

Then we have the chestfeeders, birthing parent, vagina havers, uterus holders etc. All to ensure the word woman is never used for adult human females. Big topics to discuss and pissing a lot of women off.

And coming soon: international womans day, want to count how many stunning and brave transwomen will be held up as rolemodels on how adult human females can overcome the biological barriers society puts up?

Sophoclesthefox · 04/03/2021 08:00

Be the change you want to see in the world, OP! Build, and they will come!

Also, couple of random facts, if you’re maybe new to MN. For a number of years (though this has softened a bit recently) any topic that touched on trans issues that surfaced on the general boards was roundly told to fuck off back here where it belonged. This has shaped the content here, which is quite different from a few years ago as it became a sort of corral to keep the topic.

This whole site is heavily skewed towards women, so there’s feminism happening all over it, so compared to other sites, there’s actually less need for a specific feminism bord, as the whole place has a feminist slant. Read the relationships board, for example.

Lastly, what they all said ⬆️ Existential threats galvanise people.

StrangeLookingParasite · 04/03/2021 07:07
@7Days I listed some in my original post. Have a read.
How about you start by actually reading some of the repliés.

Nellodee · 04/03/2021 05:49

One of the reasons this board has such a focus is because these discussions are shut down elsewhere. We recently had an influx of Australian gender critical feminists, I believe, who came here after being banned for having discussions about the conflict between women’s rights and trans rights. When mumsnet is one of the only places permitting this discussion, it is obviously going to act as a focal point for those discussions.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 04/03/2021 01:38

Thank you @7Days
I'm feeling better after reading about things that have happened today.
Some of that Twitter stuff had to be bitter and cynical distraction tactics.

There are loads of us aren't there?
And some sense is finally being heard.

7Days · 04/03/2021 01:09

MostInept I'm not bother with Twitter anymore so dont know how it went today. But I would always say, dont apologise for your pov. You dont need a doctorate in 'Womaning', nor do you need some special training in rhetoric to know what a woman is.
You just need to be a woman with your own voice.

There's loads of us.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 04/03/2021 00:56

I foolishly engaged with Twitter today in response to some of the awful things being said about Mumsnet. I wish I hadn't now, I feel much worse for it. I'm not able to wrangle words and ideas about cleverly enough. I know they're wrong but I can't find the right comebacks!

PotholeParadies · 04/03/2021 00:31

@Delphinium20

I care deeply about women's reproductive health, from period poverty, abortion restrictions to FGM to egg donation and surrogacy, medical research and more.

I'd LOVE to have zero trans insertion into those topics...but ironically enough, today I saw MN mods have to defend a past surrogacy thread because it was accused by a man on Twitter of 'transphobia' and 'homophobia'. My preference is to speak with women about women's health, but men seem to push, push, push into our conversations. Bugs me to no end.

I do hope it wasn't a bloke and LGBT representative who had to make a public apology for creating a thread devoting to maligning Allison Bailey and elicited a post that suggested burning Allison Bailey's house down. Which he then liked.

Because I saw that very same bloke arguing with MNHQ on twitter today, although I didn't pay attention to what he was arguing about.

7Days · 04/03/2021 00:19

Agree Delphinium

A total waste of energy and activism. While say - women and children running from an abuser have nowhere to go
