A seventeen year-old high school student in British Columbia was told that her choice of outfit made her female teacher and male student teacher feel "uncomfortable". She was sent to the Principal's office and it was suggested that she should go home and change her clothes.

Naturally, she felt upset and humiliated and her father is outraged on her behalf according to several press reports. www.abbynews.com/news/b-c-teen-in-turtleneck-lace-edged-dress-sent-home-from-school-for-inappropriate-outfit/

I don't think humiliating young women for their choice of clothing is right but equally I am not sure that her dress is appropriate for school but I'm old so what do I know?

I don't see why this has made the news (well, I do see why - a depressed economic model favouring lazy clickbait journalism). Regardless of the school's actions, her father is doing her no favours whatsoever. Why can't they work it out directly with the school or school authorities? That would be a much more valuable experience for her than having her name and nightie-clad selfie beamed around the world in a big Papa Bear sulk.

There’s bugger all wrong with it.

What a pile of shite.

There are some right idiots on the btl

Slips are typically silky and loose, like what they are meant for, to be "slipped" off. This is a cotton-spandex black dress with lace trimmings

Slips can be loose or tight - depends on what you're going to wear on top of it. That is a slip, not a dress.

On the other hand, this makes a good point.

I agree with that school. This most definitely appears to be at slip. Slips are under clothing. Wearing this would be analogous to a guy wearing boxer shorts and calling them shorts and saying that he is appropriately covered

The dress either meets the dress code or it doesn't. People's feelings.. a subjective measure.. shouldn't come into it.

It also reminded me of a petticoat or a slip dress that I had in the 1990s which I did not wear to work but only for going out in.

I agree that it was a mistake for the teachers to say that her outfit made them feel uncomfortable.

It looks like a petticoat to me. I have one very similar from Whistles. If I turned up at the office wearing that I think someone would take me aside and tell me I'd forgotten to put my dress on.

The reason given is not good. They could have said it made everyone uncomfortable or just it's not suitable for school.
