Amazon banning “when Harry became Sally”

One step forward, one step back....

Amazon has introduced a new “hate speech policy” and banned a book about trans gender. Conservative media is referred to this as digital book burning.

After all, censoring them only adds to their credibility.

I disagree on that, de-platforming is safer than legitimizing them by affording them a pulpit.

JohnRokesmith · 13/03/2021 07:49

@Hibari

banning and censoring critical voices on gender, on coronavirus and on other issues where only the approved viewpoint is allowed.

I just caught this.

So... are we not okay with corona virus deniers getting shut down?

Is Mumsnet okay with corona virus denial?

I believe in free speech; this includes allowing delusional idiots like coronavirus denialists free speech as well. After all, censoring them only adds to their credibility.

Interestingly you can buy Mein Kampf on Amazon, but not a book criticising transgender trends.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 13/03/2021 07:08

@UppityPuppity

Just checked - Mein Kampf is still for sale, so glad to see the Amazon ‘hate speech policy’ is being consistently applied...
Worth repeating

@FindTheTruth

Amazon have decided to ban books that 'frame transgender and other sexual identities as mental illnesses'

Messages banned by Amazon:

 1. Parents of children with gender dysphoria have been told their children will commit suicide if they don't transition. Yet studies show 80%+ of of children with gender dysphoria will naturally grow out of it.
Can I get a link to those studies?
FindTheTruth · 13/03/2021 06:54

Messages in the book banned by Amazon:

 1. These statistics are heartbreaking and should stop us rushing into gender ideology
FindTheTruth · 13/03/2021 06:53

Messages in the book banned by Amazon:

 1. 41% of people who identify as transgender will attempt suicide at some point in their lives. And people who have had transition surgery are 19 times more likely than average to die by suicide

@CoffeeTeaChocolate

Hollow, it is “When Harry became Sally”. I haven’t read it but apparently it is about transgender and allegedly respectfully written.
It frames being transgender as a mental illness.

Not really respectful or in line with current scientific or psychological evidence.
If that's enough for them to chose not to sell it... I guess that's up to them? /shrug

McDuffy · 13/03/2021 06:15

This is really concerning Sad I pay for Amazon prime but try not to use them. Going to try harder.

FindTheTruth · 13/03/2021 05:14

Update
www.wsj.com/articles/amazon-wont-sell-books-framing-lgbtq-identities-as-mental-illnesses-11615511380?

Amazon . com Inc. said it recently removed a three-year-old book about transgender issues from its platforms because it decided not to sell books that frame transgender and other sexual identities as mental illnesses

MissBarbary · 01/03/2021 13:13

That article would be better without the hyperbole. Amazon has not killed bookshops; e-books have not killed bookshops. The book trade has responded better than most sectors to the threat of online sales.

The village I grew up in in the 60s and 70s had a newsagent who kept a very small stock of books. It closed but the village now has a proper bookshop. It's the same in many rural locations. The city I live in has new, small local independent bookshops too.

The wider context here is really worrying and echoes the patterns seen where both mainstream media and social media are banning and censoring critical voices on gender, on coronavirus and on other issues where only the approved viewpoint is allowed.

As a British commentator, Richie Allen, points out:
"Amazon will soon be the only place left where you can buy a physical book, or the equivalent digital download. The High Street is dead. Amazon, not coronavirus, has killed it. Amazon will have total control of what you can and cannot read. It goes without saying that the implications for free speech are unthinkable."

richieallen.co.uk/book-burning-amazon-pulls-book-that-criticises-transgender-movement/

A comment in response on that page claims " I think Amazon are buying up stocks of a lot of things because when you look on other sites they are not available or out of stock.“

I can imagine that this might well be true — if so, the consequences are even worse for free speech and free thought than those of a simple ban.

I have this on Audible. It's not longer for sale but I suppose at least they haven't deleted my file. For now...

NecessaryScene1 · 28/02/2021 13:23

"The Inequality of the Equality Act: Concerns from the Left," which platformed several WoLF feminists and the stories of concerned leftist parents of trans-identified children (as well as one male detransitioner). It's really, really worth a watch if you have an hour or so

Strong agree. It's an event which is referred to a lot as part of the guilt-by-association stuff, but if anyone actually stopped to watch it it's one of the strongest panels on the subject - particularly for the US, where real mainstream discussion is so limited.

Hence you see a lot of snapshots of "evil women on the stage at evil place", but they won't give you the link to the video.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 28/02/2021 13:10

Bookshop.org also have it in stock and help support local bookstores when you buy from them. I bought Abigail Shrier’s book from them when it was unavailable on Amazon and they were great.

Thank you for the link usehive

MissBarbary
I've been using Kobo a long time.

MissBarbary · 28/02/2021 12:42
Digital download at apple books
books.apple.com/us/book/when-harry-became-sally/id1418912430
Google Play Books has it too. Google is cheaper than the ePub link but Kobo is the cheapest of the 4.

I've no interest in reading this book but am interested in alternatives to Kindle.

MissBarbary · 28/02/2021 12:08

Kobo has When Harry became Sally as an e- book and an audible book.

I have been hoping for a while my ancient Kindle would break so I could justify buying a new e-reader. Does anyone have a Kobe e-reader?

The Kobe app was horrible on a tablet or phone so if I'm going to ditch Kindle I'll need a new e-reader.

BarbaraofKent · 28/02/2021 11:47

I'm another who briefly was trying to think of why When Harry Met Sally would be banned from Amazon? Grin

Nimora · 28/02/2021 11:31

Another vote for Hive - super quick postage.

Chimoia · 28/02/2021 10:50

Blackwells are good too.
