How many women (or men) identify as cisgender?

On another forum, I said "Most women don't identify as cisgender, and many feel that describing them as such is disrespectful". Someone has asked me for evidence of this. I think it's probably true, but I haven't seen any statistics or even estimates of numbers. I'm interested in any evidence or arguments which would either support or refute my statement.

There has been some research into whether people who are “normative” (term used in the studies) consider themselves to identify to a greater or lesser degree “as a man” (if female) or “as a woman” (if male).

Depending on the study, IIRC, between 35 - 40% of subjects did not “feel” 100% “as a woman” (females) or “as a man” (males) 100% of the time.

Some trans activist takes on this are that either:

a) even fleeting, partial “feeling as if the opposite sex” means that a person is trans so there are lots more trans people around than people realise.

(However, this goes completely counter to the usual claims by trans activists that anyone who goes the whole hog but then detransitions was never really trans in the first place.)

b) there is no clear distinction between “trans” and “cis”

(So, arguably, neither descriptor makes much sense.)

From the “Crossdreamers” website:

The Multi-Gender Identity Questionnaire

The study is based on what they call the Multi-Gender Identity Questionnaire (Multi-GIQ). The Multi-GIQ includes a lot of variables relevant to gender identity, including:

“feeling-as-a-woman”
“feeling- as-a-man”
“feeling-as-both-genders”
“feeling-as-neither-gender”
“satisfied-being-a-woman/man”
“wish-to-be-a-man/woman”
“dislike-my-body-due-to-its-female/male-form”
“wish-to-have-the-body-of-the-other-sex”

To give you two examples of the type of questions the respondents were given:

In the past 12 months, have you had the wish or desire to be a man

Always, Often, Sometimes, Rarely, Never, Not relevant

In the past 12 months, have you wished you had the body of the “other” sex?

Always, Often, Sometimes, Rarely, Never

The author has also commented on the validity of the study given the population sampled:

”Is it true that 1/3 of non-transgender people fantasize about being the other sex?”

NiceGerbil · 21/02/2021 05:20

The big problem is that no one has ever asked.

Trans people have a sense of internal gender obviously.

And that has been extrapolated to the whole population.

But no one has asked the whole population if this is a thing.

For me it's not something in my identity at all. The things that define me are not to do with that.

I became a feminist from very young. Before i knew the word feminist. Because I was a person and had all this stuff put on me because I was female.

If the question was asked properly. Most people, I would guess, do not have gender/ sex as as thing.

According to the stonewall definitions I am trans. But somehow I suspect I'm not allowed to be/ not the right sort of trans.

MoleSmokes · 21/02/2021 04:41

If less than 1% of the population is granted or assumes so much privilege that it is allowed to redefine the status of 99% of the population in relation to the 1%, what sort of society would that be?

Feudal?

Theocracy?

Totalitarian?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/02/2021 04:15

specific terms*

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/02/2021 04:15

I don't identify as anything specifically, but I have no problem with anyone describing me as Cis, because I've only ever seen it used when the discussion is in relation to Trans issues, and in that context I don't view it as much different to being described as 'natal' or 'biological'. There are some occasions where having very specific are important and absolutely necessary for the purpose of clarity, but having said that, I can't imagine ever being offended by being described as Cis regardless of the context.

DramaAlpaca · 21/02/2021 04:01

DH misguidedly referred to me as a cis woman a while ago. He'd just come across it and didn't really know what it meant or what he was saying, to be fair. But let's just say, he won't ever say that to me again. I explained, probably not as calmly as I could've done, that I'm a woman and that no prefix is necessary. He got my point, I'm pleased to say.

Wandawomble · 21/02/2021 03:32

Most women won’t have a clue what cis means. My daughter says cis is now being used as an insult along with “het”
I am a woman. Period.

JanewaysBun · 20/02/2021 23:35

Deeply offensive to me too

Bluesername · 20/02/2021 23:34

Cis is the antonym of trans.

So if you believe transwomen are female, do you also believe those you call "cis women" are male?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/02/2021 22:16

But both imply identification with cultural and social expectations of a gender. This is the part that many (most?) people on this forum find mystifying.

YY. I reject it all. Let's not reify the oppressive social construct that is "gender".

Ikeameatballs · 20/02/2021 22:15

I am a woman.

If I could identify as anything it would be a pedigree pet cat as mine seem to have an ideal life. I suspect that if I tried to eat tuna from a bowl on the floor and shit in a litter tray my partner would leave me so for now I’m keeping my animal identity in the closet.

@andyoldlabour

The way I see it: Transgender is I believe a protected characteristic under the equality act 2010, therefore TWATW, TGATG, TMATM and TBATB. I have nothing against that because that is reality. However, "sex" is also a protected characteristic, therefore girl/woman = human female, boy/man = human male.
The protected characteristics are:

age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
race
religion or belief
sex
sexual orientation

However even the EHRC cant stick to the correct definitions. It talks about gender being assigned at birth. I don't know about anyone else, but nowhere on my birth certificate does it state my gender. Only my sex.

Soontobe60 · 20/02/2021 21:55

@mayjaye

That's pretty transphobic tbh if you think their whole existence needs to be based on a lie that must never be revealed.

I don't believe that.

I respect your desire to avoid time wasting, but as you cannot explain what ‘Cis’ means, I don’t know why you wasted time posting in the first place.

Thank you for respecting that. :)

Cis is the antonym of trans. I posted because responses so far were very uniform.

Cis is NOT the antonym of trans in this field. It is a term that was originally used in a scientific scenario which has been appropriated by the trans lobby in order to prop up the belief that there are biological women who ‘identify’ as such, then there is another type of woman, one that ‘identifies’ as one but was biologically born male. I am NOT cis. I am a woman. I don’t ‘identify’ as one. I am one. An Adult Human Female. There are many different variations of AHFs, all to do with physical characteristics that a female is born with, eg skin, hair and eye colour; height; foot size; hair type; no AHFs are male.
crumpet · 20/02/2021 20:51

Cisgender is a bloody insult.

Bluesername · 20/02/2021 20:48

I guess it depends what is actually meant by gender reassignment

The Y chromosome is there for life, surgery or not. Even removing body parts doesn't reassign that.

Hepsie · 20/02/2021 20:09

Thanks for that. I should have double checked. I wonder how many people actually go through gender reasignment.

I guess it depends what is actually meant by gender reassignment. I would say it should be penis removal. But obviously the majority of transwomen keep their penis. Which to my mind means they haven't reassigned at all and there is nothing that separates them from men.

Hepsie · 20/02/2021 20:05

The Equality Act definition of the protected characteristic of 'gender reassignment' is very broad: you don't have to actually go through anything at all, as I understand it

Appreciate that, although the trans umbrella is so huge it pretty much includes the whole world and their dog. And it's not that broad. Although it is too broad.

SetYourselfOnFire · 20/02/2021 19:52

I don't identify as anything in terms of "gender identity." I don't believe in such a thing. What pisses me off though is that trans people and their allies are allowed to label us "cis" against our will and we're not allowed to object. Exactly contrary to what they claim to believe.

Thing is back in the day trans meant transitioning

So a man transitioning into a woman (whether you believe that or not)

Now it makes a lot less sense and means you can change the identification (or not) of 50% of woman to cis, so now just another subset of women

Basically

FrippEnos · 20/02/2021 19:31

I don't know what cis means

I've just looked at stonewall's info page.

Apparently Cis means "not trans", so they seem to think that trans is the norm.

Can't say that I am surprised.

Justcashnosweets · 20/02/2021 19:25

I don't know what cis means.

MarshaBradyo · 20/02/2021 19:23

I never use the word

It annoyed me that an application asked if I was ‘female (cisgender)’ so I didn’t tick it
