How many women (or men) identify as cisgender?

On another forum, I said "Most women don't identify as cisgender, and many feel that describing them as such is disrespectful". Someone has asked me for evidence of this. I think it's probably true, but I haven't seen any statistics or even estimates of numbers. I'm interested in any evidence or arguments which would either support or refute my statement.

It’s made up nonsense. Of course most people don’t identify as a made up nonsense term.

Most people don’t ‘identify’ as anything. They just are the sex they are.

Hepsie · 17/02/2021 23:07

God no. Creepy woke terminology. I don't describe myself as that.

SpringtimeBluebells · 17/02/2021 23:06

Nope

I'm natural born woman

IsThePopeCatholic · 17/02/2021 23:06

No. Absolutely not cis gender. I am a woman.

Daughterofmabel · 17/02/2021 23:05

Thats a hard no from me. Who would want to identify with oppressive cultural stereotypes expected of females?

Champagneandmonstermunch · 17/02/2021 23:03

Do I identify as a woman, who's not a man, who identifies as a woman? No. I'd rather keep it simple.

5zeds · 17/02/2021 23:02

I don’t and find it insulting. Way back when I needed fertility treatment to build my family, it was fairly common for the sub fertile to describe those who could reproduce unassisted as “Breeders”. To my mind always rude and jarring.
I don’t believe anyone can change the sex they are born. I am very happy for anyone to wear whatever they like (unless intimidating) and to work or have the hobbies they like (unless intimidating), but I don’t think clothes and behaviour are what makes someone male or female.
Being called transphobic is as annoying as the cis thing.

bitheby · 17/02/2021 22:58

The implication of cis is that you are happy with the stereotypes associated with your sex. I'm really not. I would imagine many women are not.

If it's about gender and not sex then I think we should get to identify however we like and drop the cis if it doesn't sit right. Otherwise it's only the people under the trans umbrella who get to identify with their true selves and the boring rest of us have to identify as non trans and lump it.

Winesalot · 17/02/2021 22:55

To be ‘c*s’ you have to have a gender that is described as fitting a certain way of thinking.

How offensive is that? That I muat be in a box so someone with some ethereal essence can be free? Fuck off with that.

Exactly who benefits from destabilizing society? I think what is currently unfolding in France is a shocking hard lesson to learn about the basis for this ideology and exactly who suffers the most from destabilization in this way.

So, for all who are happy to use it, please tell me exactly who benefits from its use? and who suffers ultimately from its use?

KittiesInsane · 17/02/2021 22:52

On a more anecdotal level, shall I ask my very elderly MIL if she identifies as a cis female? Could be a more interesting conversation than the repeated one about whether the cat is allowed on the table/sofa/sideboard at least.

KittiesInsane · 17/02/2021 22:48

If you want a fairly unbiased sample, I’m reliably informed by someone who does NHS software that if a form has both sex and gender on it, ‘no bloody bugger knows what to do with the gender box and it screws up the data.’

Pet8 · 17/02/2021 22:44

I hate the word "cis". I am woman.

Splann · 17/02/2021 22:43

I’m a woman, no further clarification is needed.

Why can’t people who identify as something they weren’t born as refer to themselves as non-cis whatever? Why do I have to change what I call myself when I’m not the one changing?

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 17/02/2021 22:34

I hate the phrase cis-woman. I won't use it.

Enidblyton1 · 17/02/2021 22:34

I wonder who came up with the word CIS? It’s so ugly!
I shall pretend I never stumbled across this thread and forget about such a ridiculous word. Let’s hope it goes out of fashion quickly.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 17/02/2021 22:34

No. Cisgender is offensive as well as unrealistic.

MashNgravy · 17/02/2021 22:32

Don't call me "cis", I'm a woman.

SylviaPlath1984 · 17/02/2021 22:31

@GoldenBlue

I very strongly do not identify as CIS gender and would feel insulted if called CIS.

I am not a subclass of women, alongside men. I am a woman. It does not need any qualifier

Yebanksandbraes · 17/02/2021 22:31

Yes, I am cisgender. I have no problem being described as such, it is an accurate representation of who I am.

Campions · 17/02/2021 22:30

I have, and will always correct anyone who refers to me as cis. I'm a woman.

WendyTestaburger · 17/02/2021 22:30

@MichelleofzeResistance

I find this word extremely offensive. It implies that I associate with the gender stereotypes and voluntarily embrace the disadvantage that comes with my sex. I don't.

I also don't appreciate labels being applied to me that I didn't choose and don't agree with.

I also don't think it's a good thing for women to be relegated to a subset of their own sex.

This is a banned word on this forum under the guidelines because so many women find it offensive, although in the past few weeks it's been increasingly creeping in unchallenged. As we're deleted for the slightest hint of a transgression in language that a trans person may be offended by or find uncivil, it's reasonable to expect that women who find this form of language have their feelings equally respected. The same stringent standards should be equally applied.

This!
RedcurrantPuff · 17/02/2021 22:28

@gingercatsarebest

I do not identify as cis And I object to being called cis
This.

If anyone refers to me as such I will correct them. If every other bloody group in society gets to choose what descriptors are applied to them so do I.

Desperatelyseekingreason · 17/02/2021 22:24

Women have spent decades trying to dismantle stereotypes. Personally I refuse to help turn the clock back so no, I'm not CIS anything.

Soontobe60 · 17/02/2021 22:24

Woman / adult human female here. Not ‘cis’

ValancyRedfern · 17/02/2021 22:20

I think most women have never heard the phrase and have no idea what it means. The only people I know who know the term are mumsnetters and under 25s. I certainly reject it now, but when I first heard it I didn't give it much thought, thinking of it as the the equivalent of straight meaning 'not gay'
