How many women (or men) identify as cisgender?

On another forum, I said "Most women don't identify as cisgender, and many feel that describing them as such is disrespectful". Someone has asked me for evidence of this. I think it's probably true, but I haven't seen any statistics or even estimates of numbers. I'm interested in any evidence or arguments which would either support or refute my statement.

Maybe original woman sounds better than real. Still means the same thing to most of the worlds population.

ChancesWhatChances · 18/02/2021 01:15

@Akire but we already have that, we have women and we have trans-women. There’s no need to add real or cis to anything as trans people have their trans label.

Walkacrossthesand · 18/02/2021 01:15

I'm an adult human female and have started to tick 'prefer not to say' for the questionnaire enquiring about what I identify as. I don't identify as anything. I'm female.

ChancesWhatChances · 18/02/2021 01:14

I identify as an adult human female because I am an adult human female. I’m a woman, not a cis. Trans people are more than welcome to add on whatever add ons they want to their identity but they don’t get to dictate what biological woman are.

Akire · 18/02/2021 01:10

What’s the difference between using Cis & Real? I am a real woman, I am a Cis woman. Both mean exactly the same thing right? No one is going to be happy with real so why use Cis? Let’s have generic woman and then Trans/non binary woman person if needed.

hallouminatus · 18/02/2021 01:07

I see your point, Errol. Of course a self-selecting poll on Mumsnet is never going to give really robust data. A properly conducted poll would be interesting, but, as always the way the question is worded and the way terms are defined would be crucial. If 'cis' were defined as 'not trans' (as it occasionally is), the responses would be very different. That's clearly not the way people on this thread are understanding the word.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2021 23:56

I've seen and voted in that poll. If we did a more specific one, then the percentage who identify as Cis should be even lower as the 9% (last time I looked) who feel they do have a gender identity would be those who identify as trans or nonbinary or whatever.

MaudTheInvincible · 17/02/2021 23:42

I don't consider myself cis. I am not defined with reference to sexist stereotypes or other people. I am a woman. An adult human female.

I consider the imposition of the word cis an offensive and hostile act.

playbadlycast · 17/02/2021 23:35

@Splann

I’m a woman, no further clarification is needed.

Why can’t people who identify as something they weren’t born as refer to themselves as non-cis whatever? Why do I have to change what I call myself when I’m not the one changing?

This.
hallouminatus · 17/02/2021 23:34

Errol,
Eresh linked to this poll, which is similar to your suggestion, and has had thousands of votes. It is still open for more!

Redwinestillfine · 17/02/2021 23:34

I find it insulting personally

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 17/02/2021 23:30

Cis

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 17/02/2021 23:30

I don't identify as anything. I am a woman, a biological female. Being described as via would really, really piss me off.

douliket · 17/02/2021 23:26

Who actually sits down and makes up these words..wtf is this new stupid term, I am a woman,I may like tool making and keeping my hair short and partaking in sports that have were mainly seen as "manly". But there is no one word to describe the above,I am just a woman with whatever tastes, likes and dislikes,I don't identify as a woman because I bloody am one..this whole debate about gender is boring, why do people feel they need a name and fit in a box, u are either a man or a woman with endless possibles traits and interests but it can't change who you are ffs 🤦‍♀️

Stinkywizzleteets · 17/02/2021 23:24

Oops pressed send to soon.
I am female born but I don’t feel like a woman. I am because that’s my biology. I don’t perform or present feminine which seems to be a prerequisite of CIs.

It seems like utter bullshit

Stinkywizzleteets · 17/02/2021 23:22

It confuses me. If cis is being the gender that aligns with your birth sex, what if you don’t believe in gender at all? Does that make you trans under this definition? If gender is performative and presentation, what if you’re female born but don’t adhere to the stereotypes?

I am female
Born.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2021 23:20

Nope, me neither.
Ask this person if they've any evidence that many people even think in terms of 'identifying' as anything at all, rather than just getting on being themselves.

An AIBU poll could be interesting.
If the AIBU proposition is "Most women don't identify as cisgender" then the voting guide is:
If you identify as cisgender, vote YABU , clearly
But otherwise:
If you don't know what 'identify as cisgender' means, or don't care, then it's obviously not something you do so YANBU
If you identify as something other than cisgender eg Nonbinary or trans, then YANBU.
If you have objections to the whole concept of 'identifying' into a 'gender' then YANBU.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 17/02/2021 23:16

i identify as a woman because I was born with a vagina.

hallouminatus · 17/02/2021 23:15

Many thanks to everyone who has posted answers, in in particular to Eresh for pointing out the AIBU poll (which I really should have been able to find for myself).
Although the responses here and in that poll may not be strictly representative , I do feel that my original contention has been vindicated.

OP posts:
imjackieweaver · 17/02/2021 23:13

I find the term offensive

Most people don't obsess over gender full stop

Campions · 17/02/2021 23:12

@Yebanksandbraes

Yes, I am cisgender. I have no problem being described as such, it is an accurate representation of who I am.
Can I ask why 'woman' wouldnt describe you accurately? Unless you are a man of course.
dapsnotplimsolls · 17/02/2021 23:11

I'm a woman, I wouldn't be happy if anyone called me or expected me to call myself anything else. I wonder how many men would be happy to use it?

SpringtimeBluebells · 17/02/2021 23:10

@Labobo

I don't. It gives me the creeps that some tiny sector of society has decided that they have the right to redefine what I am and get angry if I don't conform. I am a woman.
This is perfect...... female or woman and no other shit description that some prat has thought up
Gonescone · 17/02/2021 23:09

I 'identify' as a woman because I was born female. I grew up wearing tracksuits and my brother's hand-me-downs. I liked my hair boyish, I played with cars and watched wrestling on TV, games consoles were my hobby. I joined the army, became a teakwondo instructor in my free time, watched action movies. I never confirmed to a bullshit gender stereotype. I am a woman simply because I was born female.
