How many women (or men) identify as cisgender?

On another forum, I said "Most women don't identify as cisgender, and many feel that describing them as such is disrespectful". Someone has asked me for evidence of this. I think it's probably true, but I haven't seen any statistics or even estimates of numbers. I'm interested in any evidence or arguments which would either support or refute my statement.

Can we just notice too in passing: the percentage of posters here stating that they find 'cis' an offensive word.

Then compare that to the percentage of deleted posts, and how long this thread has been allowed to stand, which suggests that women here, despite being offended, are explaining why rather than rushing to report and ask for removal.

And then consider what this thread would look like and how long it would have been allowed to stand at all, had women here wanted to discuss other explicitly banned words in the guidelines within a thread? What is the difference I wonder?

QueenoftheAir · 18/02/2021 10:13

Not me.

I once responded to little Owen Jones of Twitter saying that I found being called "cisgender" offensive. You should have seen the pile on I got from incels and other social justice warriors still living in their parent's houses

ErrolTheDragon · 18/02/2021 10:11

I wouldn't be surprised if many of the younger people who think in terms of 'gender identity' at the moment will tend to grow out of it as the realities of sexism based firmly on sex, particularly reproductive role, impinge on them. Becoming a parent or knowing more peers who are parents (especially for women) is often enlightening.

Is gender identity something people over 30 no longer have?

Did they ever have? Gender was something that was, to the majority, used interchangeably with sex. And often still is.

KittiesInsane · 18/02/2021 09:36

Even a passing glance at the gender stuff used in schools and online gender quizzes tells me that I cannot truthfully identify as ‘cis gender’.

I’d feel extremely silly identifying as trans on those grounds though, so where does that leave me? Is gender identity something people over 30 no longer have?

Bicnod · 18/02/2021 09:34

I am a woman. No prefix necessary. I would correct anyone who described me as cis. I am not a subset of women, I am a woman.

I find the whole concept of gender identity a bit bizarre. Who comes up with these prescribed traits that make you 'womanly'? Not women I'm guessing. Why should I sign up to a (likely) male view of what makes someone a woman?

I was never a 'girly' girl, never into makeup/hair etc. I was described as a tomboy as a child and dressed 'like a boy' (cut all my hair off, refused to wear dresses) probably because I saw that boys got to do more fun stuff and didn't get labelled as 'bossy' or 'show off' when they had ideas and put them forward. I grew up in a world geared towards boys/men and I dealt with and reacted to that reality. Where does that fit into this prescribed view of what makes a woman?

We all have different quirks, traits and ways of reacting to the world we live in. Surely this is just what it is to be a sentient being.

I don't identify as anything, I am just me and I am a woman.

Doingitaloneandproud · 18/02/2021 08:43

@GoldenBlue

I very strongly do not identify as CIS gender and would feel insulted if called CIS.

I am not a subclass of women, alongside men. I am a woman. It does not need any qualifier

This. I'm a woman, I won't ever be using CIS in front of that.
BaronessWrongCrowd · 18/02/2021 08:06

I'm not Cis anything. I refuse to have made up labels forced on me. I am a woman plain and simple.

scentedgeranium · 18/02/2021 07:42

I'm a woman. But my 25 year old son and his 24 year old wife are a cisman and ciswoman. Fortunately by 22 year old DD hasn't fallen for this nonsense (yet).

TheElementsSong · 18/02/2021 07:35

I am not CIS and find it offensive to imply that I somehow agree with all the oppressions of gender imposed upon me, because I am a member of the sex associated with the production of large immotile gametes.

I don't need to "identify" as a woman, any more than I need to "identify" as species Homo sapiens or as 5'4" tall or a resident of planet Earth. You don't need to "identify" as things which just are.

DaisyHeadMaisy · 18/02/2021 07:09

I find the use of CIS deeply offensive. I am a woman.

whiteroseredrose · 18/02/2021 07:08

Exactly.

Woman and transwoman
Man and transman

All that is needed.

I was at college with an American who talked about non-decaffeinated coffee..... that's just coffee. One is real, one has been chemically altered.
Same as above.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 18/02/2021 06:57

@FishWithoutABike

I don’t mind the use of ‘cis’ when discussing trans or gender issues. It sometimes helps to have a word for clarification. I don’t ‘identify’ as anything though. I’m just a woman because I am an adult human female.
Surely "trans" is the qualifying word? So woman and trans-woman. Man and trans-man. No need for cis at all.

Eviebeans · 18/02/2021 06:50

After I'd Googled it I certainly don't view/label myself in that way. I'm a woman. I object to those "making the change" trying to change me. I'm fine - leave me be...

Riojasmoothy · 18/02/2021 06:10

I am a woman, no prefix needed.

Shineonyoucrazy · 18/02/2021 06:06

Woman/adult human female here. Calling me cis gender misgenders me. I have no gender identity and an eclectic gender expression and I am not willing to declare anything to the state or commerce about this. It's a triggering subject for me.

Zinco · 18/02/2021 06:02

South Park on "cisgender"...

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 18/02/2021 05:32

I'm female. I like some things that are stereotypically associated with women, some things which are stereotypically associated with men, and many things which don't neatly align to such stereotypes - cheese, the beach, wildlife photography, antiques - what does that make me? Answer - middleaged! My gender identity is the Antiques Roadshow

oldwomanwhoruns · 18/02/2021 05:20

Woman. No prefix.

bikelights · 18/02/2021 05:19

I guess it depends on who you ask. No one with any understanding of it's subtle role in the oppression of women would be happy to be described as cis, but a lot of women wouldn't know that and might 'go along with it'

Hepsie · 18/02/2021 03:52

What’s the difference between using Cis & Real? I am a real woman, I am a Cis woman. Both mean exactly the same thing right? No one is going to be happy with real so why use Cis? Let’s have generic woman and then Trans/non binary woman person if needed.

Women don't need a prefix and they are not a subset of their own sex class. Woman is fine.

LouJ85 · 18/02/2021 03:31

Never heard it before and would never use it to refer to myself. I identify as female, and that's the end of that.

fantasmasgoria1 · 18/02/2021 01:18

I am a woman. There is no cis about that.

FancySomeChips · 18/02/2021 01:18

Female woman here.
Enough of the crappy terminology to confuse what I am and will always be.
Female. Woman. Mother. Daughter. Sister.
I like pink, sewing, watercolours, ballet and films about gangsters, drugs and with loads of swearing.
I don’t need a sliding scale of character traits to tell me who I am.
If you do, go for it! But stop erasing and trying to confuse what I am.
