How many women (or men) identify as cisgender?

On another forum, I said "Most women don't identify as cisgender, and many feel that describing them as such is disrespectful". Someone has asked me for evidence of this. I think it's probably true, but I haven't seen any statistics or even estimates of numbers. I'm interested in any evidence or arguments which would either support or refute my statement.

I saw someone on twitter earlier say that the promotion of breastfeeding promoted 'lactating humans' over 'non-lactating trans-mothers'. That annoyed me - trans people are mothers but women are 'lactating humans

And what’s best for the baby doesn’t even come into it.

OneMillionSteps · 18/02/2021 12:16

I’m a woman.
I was born a girl and now I’m a woman.
Other people can say they’re cisgender if they want to, doesn’t bother me, but don’t try to include me.

@gamerchick

As a whole, I never come across this type of discussion in real life or any other context at all. If you don't have any trans people in your life I can imagine you could live your life without coming anywhere close to the term cis

This stuff will touch everyone. I got a form to fill in from my kids school for his boosters that had what gender were you at birth instead of sex. Which I changed it back to.

This is weaseling its way in and people simply aren't paying attention. Those who haven't noticed yet will now they've seen it once. Whether it matters to then is another matter.

Oh right yeah, tbh I have filled in forms asking whether I identify as male, female or non-binary but that's it I think. But haven't come across terms like cis outside of the trans discussion.

I don't mind the inclusion of extra options for trans people but not the erasure of the word woman or the whole chest-feeding thing. I saw someone on twitter earlier say that the promotion of breastfeeding promoted 'lactating humans' over 'non-lactating trans-mothers'. That annoyed me - trans people are mothers but women are 'lactating humans'.

Cisgender / cis means that you voluntarily identify with feminine gender stereotypes.

BloodyCovid · 18/02/2021 12:06

No, I am just a woman.
Not a ‘type’ of woman. Or a woman without a penis.

DenisetheMenace · 18/02/2021 12:04

Embarrassed to say without having to google im still not entirely sure what it means (what you were born as?)

I’m a woman 🤷‍♀️

malloo · 18/02/2021 12:04

I won't collude with an ideology that tells me I'm now a subset of women because the term women now includes men. So no, I'm not cis.

Bibidy · 18/02/2021 12:03

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Isn't it absolutely mind boggling that people still don't know about this CIS bollocks?

Do people live under rocks? I just can't get my head round it.

Tbh I only really ever see this type of heated discussion re trans issues on here or on twitter. And a few news articles about JK Rowling.

picklemewalnuts · 18/02/2021 12:03

I'm not cisgender. I'm a woman. I wear what I like, but still have to take into account boobs and periods.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/02/2021 12:02

I completely reject gender identity ideology so the term "cis" is presumptuous, meaningless nonsense to me. It is a loaded term, as it is primarily used to construct a false axis of privilege between women and male people who identify as women but face few of the issues we do.

Bibidy · 18/02/2021 11:59

Umm I guess I do in the sense that I identify as the sex/gender I was born with. But I wouldn't use the term.

I feel that it's madness to try and force the term 'cis' into the mainstream in order to mollify a small minority. I wouldn't ever use the term cis as I don't feel it's necessary for most people in a day-to-day context.

I support people's rights to live as they please and have zero issues with trans people at all, but I do feel like the campaign at the moment to change language, particularly surrounding women, is harmful and unnecessary.

Marcipex · 18/02/2021 11:59

I strongly object to being referred to as cisgender.
I’m a woman.
I don’t need other people to label me otherwise.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/02/2021 11:59

That seems to be the rule, more or less. I don't think it should be allowed to "refer to cis people" since either it excludes all women who don't identify themselves as cis (and that's most of us!) or else it does include many women who find the term "cis" insulting. Or both, at the same time.

Exactly. I think it should be an outright ban, or less speech policing generally. Either or.

InMySpareTime · 18/02/2021 11:57

There's a gender census doing the rounds, for people who do not feel their gender expression fits neatly into boxes.
It has a question about honorifics (Dr/Mx/Mr/Miss etc) that failed to include Mrs as an option.
I may have mentioned this in the comments section.

YorkshireGirl35 · 18/02/2021 11:57

I didn’t even know what it meant until I was called it yesterday but now I’ve looked it up I find it very offensive. I’m a woman it doesn’t need any more definition than that.

Kind of..........in that most people are not that politically minded. Being politically minded tends to involve an ability to conceptualise abstract thoughts and ideas; and to be able to mentally manipulate and shape them into some form; or to have the tendency to perceive human behaviour at that level.

Most people are primarily social creatures in orientation. They want to conform to a group norm, or to belong to a tribe. Most people will adapt and accommodate themselves to fit in with group consensus, because the feeling of safety that comes from having lots of friends or group approval is what they seek above all.

Many people will not really question or investigate the concept of 'cis' or 'trans' - they will tend to accept what they are told by the group; and as such people will adopt certain labels as a means, and a way to belong; as well as a commitment to the desired tribe.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 18/02/2021 11:55

So people can call themselves cis, can refer to cis people but cant call you cis

That seems to be the rule, more or less. Or both, at the same time. And I can't offhand think of another offensive term for which "refer to offensive-term people" would be allowed.

ThePankhurstConnection · 18/02/2021 11:50

No. It means that you accept all the gendered stereotypes, rules and expectations of society which come under femininity and I reject that, I reject gender and I have rejected gender since I was a teenager. Now I'm in my forties I am certainly not going to start identifying with that bullcrap now.

I won't be labelled by people overly dependent on labels so they can sort their tiny, narrow worlds into good and bad and pack people away neatly into boxes. People aren't that easy to tidy away and I won't be labelled by others to become a sub section of my own biological sex. I'm a woman because I was born female.

Justhadathought · 18/02/2021 11:47

1.To 'identify as' something involves a mental/conceptual construction involving certain perceived qualities.

  1. When you' identify as' something - you attach yourself to these qualities, or you see these qualities as belonging to yourself
  1. These qualities tend to involve a list of prescribed characteristics; or what one may call stereotypes or characterised presentations. They may involve in conforming to typical behaviours or actions that are seen as being common to that thing you 'identify as'.
  1. A woman is the universally acknowledged term for an adult human female.
  1. 'Femininity' & 'masculinity' are largely social constructs that shift and vary according to time and culture. They can be expressed by either males or females - even though there are often social prohibitions around certain presentations depending on one's sex.
  1. To identify as a member of the sex that you are not would seem to imply or indicate identifying with, or being attracted to, certain kinds of presentation that is seen as being typical of that sex.
  1. Such identities tend to shift and change throughout one's life, as one attaches oneself to new presentations or qualities, and rejects or moves on from old ones.
Chicchicchicchiclana · 18/02/2021 11:46

I expect my cousin's daughter, who binned me off Facebook for posting something in support of JK Rowling when she was receiving rape and death threats - I bet she wouldn't mind being described as "cis".
