How many women (or men) identify as cisgender?

On another forum, I said "Most women don't identify as cisgender, and many feel that describing them as such is disrespectful". Someone has asked me for evidence of this. I think it's probably true, but I haven't seen any statistics or even estimates of numbers. I'm interested in any evidence or arguments which would either support or refute my statement.

OP posts:

I don't identify as anything. I am a woman, full stop.

5zeds · 19/02/2021 00:27

Gender identity is based on sexist stereotypes. this is what I think. Why on earth would I engage with the promotion of sexist stereotypes? I’m not sexist and have spent much on my life pushing back against nonsensical assumptions about women.

I1give1up · 19/02/2021 00:11

My answer is no, OP. I don’t identify as c*s, and I’d hate if anyone used it to describe me. I’m a woman. An adult, human female.

Equally, I describe myself as gay (never queer), and I don’t attempt to ‘reclaim’ any offensive terms used towards people of my ethnicity, either currently or historically.

Bluesername · 18/02/2021 22:46

I could "identify as" a cat, tree or brick but in reality I would still be a woman, not one of the above.

If I believe I'm a cat, and convince enough people I'm a cat - because I say I am - would there need to be a new label for all the real cats? No, of course not.

Despite my delusions I would not really be a cat and there's no need to redefine the word 'cat' to accommodate me.

Men do not get to redefine what a woman is. Cis is offensive.

Lettera · 18/02/2021 22:42

I'm a woman - an adult human female. I don't have a gender identity. Gender identity is based on sexist stereotypes.

AradiaGC · 18/02/2021 22:41

Not me, and I find it offensive.

The 'cis' woman of 1900 would have been perfectly happy not having the vote, because that was a male-gendered thing. Imagine where we'd be if the suffragettes had declared that they were non-binary, that of course 'cis' women didn't need the vote, frivolous and feminine as they were - but that they, being unlike other women with their inferior womanly brains, deserved to have it.

The gender roles have shifted a bit between then and now, but the logic is just the same.

No self-respecting woman is 'cis'.

@MsGrumpytrousers

"Like, trans women's brains match female brains more than male brains, and vice versa with trans men?"

So far as I am aware, there has never been a respected study that proved any substantial difference between men's brains and women's brains. So that wouldn't be possible.

And if there were anyway to reliably measure any difference between male and female brains that would be used as a diagnostic tool for trans people. Then we wouldn't have detransitioners.

Also, no one's trying to erase sex you say? twitter.com/slightlyatsea/status/1270332296583880705?s=20

you understand that studies have shown that being trans is supported by mainstream science, right? Like, trans women's brains match female brains more than male brains, and vice versa with trans men? No one is trying to argue that biological sex isn't real, it's just only a part of the story for some people...

Except, mainstream science doesn't actually support the concept of 'male brains' and 'female brains'.

given that cis just means "not trans" then sure, i'm a woman and i'm not trans so i can't see why i wouldn't?
begaydocrime · 18/02/2021 22:22

@Thislittlefinger123

Ps I'm surprised someone on the other side of the debate was asking you for evidence, evidence isn't really something they want to get into is it, that could lead them on a dangerous road to facts, and, you know, science Grin

I don't identify as anything. I'm a woman. And that's it.

Truthlikeness · 18/02/2021 22:03

I know plenty of women who will call themselves cisgender because to them is just means 'not-trans' because that is how it has been sold to them. They have no idea of the baggage behind that word.

minchinfin · 18/02/2021 19:49

Not me and I find it offensive

Cpl1586407 · 18/02/2021 15:09

@ErrolTheDragon well 'a few' did imply more than one, but apologies for my error all the same!

ErrolTheDragon · 18/02/2021 15:00

Many on this board or this thread identifying as cis?
I didn't say 'many'. You implied no-one.

FemaleAndLearning · 18/02/2021 14:57

No I will never identify cis. I am not a subset of my own biological class.

NotTerfNorCis · 18/02/2021 14:47

I'm 'cis' in the sense that I don't have a mental condition that convinces me I'm in the wrong body. These days even a lot of trans people don't have that condition.

I'm not 'cis' in the sense of feeling a powerful affinity with femininity or female gender roles, which is how 'cis' is usually meant these days.

CranberriesChoccyAgain · 18/02/2021 14:37

I also object to the term especially when TRAs tell us 'cis' women how we oppress transwomen, and how easy we have it compared to them.

OakSnows · 18/02/2021 14:32

I first came across it in a conversation where I was offended that trans women were allowed to be referred to as just “women” but I had to be referred to as a “cis woman”. After googling why was I called out and named and not allowed to just be a woman like the trans woman and any other blue alien/ man/woman/frog that’s wants to identify as a woman. If it’s bad to refer to a trans woman as a trans woman not a woman, then the same for cis.
Everyone can be what they want to be 🙂

Cpl1586407 · 18/02/2021 14:31

@Winesalot

Lol as if anyone on this board is going to say "oh yes, me, I describe myself as cis"

And yet, posters have come and said it. There are many who do agree and who regularly post that they do.

However, does it surprise you to see that there are so many who reject the term and reject the reason for its use? have you been led to believe that it is only a few women who disagree?

Many on this board or this thread identifying as cis? I've only seen one poster - after another read of the thread, my mistake for getting ahead of myself.

I see the topics on this board roll through the active threads section, and no I'm not surprised women on this board don't want to be referred to as cis.

Oskyosc · 18/02/2021 14:30

Not me

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/02/2021 14:29

Most won't know what it is.

Those who do will either accept it, to be kind or reject it as they understand that they are not a subset of women, they are actually women.

Anyone who wants to argue the semantics hasn't followed the evidence of political parties and the men and non men membership categories; Stonewalls stating aim if removing sex as a protected characteristic; charitti s for specifically female issues removing the word woman or female from their dictionary ( yet male ones retain their sexed speech) and many, many other issues.

Easiest way to illustrate the above, showing I am not prejudiced, bigoted or TERFy is to look at transwomen in sport.

Transwomen and ciswomen happily compete together, females one and all... but the pictures may gib!

MammaMiaWallace · 18/02/2021 14:27

Nope. I am what I am. Not cis or trans, just a person of the female sex.

If I had to pick it’d be nb but not because I’m GNC, just because to naval gaze to the extent that one is self-analysing their own gender to even decide if I self-categorise as “cis” isn’t an activity that’s relevant enough to me to want to indulge in confirming either way; it’s a broadly offensive and derogatory unnecessary terminology so not really willing to engage with or identify through the lens of such self-indulgent phraseology.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 18/02/2021 14:20

I can't recall exactly who the writer was, but in the latest Radical Notion issue, someone describes 'cis' as the gluing of gender to sex and I thought that's an excellent description.
As others have said, I find it deeply offensive to be told that most women naturally fit the gender stereotypes of womanhood. I don't accept that for myself or for anyone else.
I think of 'cis' in the same way as I think of 'surrendered wives'. I know there are women who identify as such and believe in it deeply, but it's sure as hell not anything close to feminist or close to progressive.
