Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Staniland Question is so good. Can we think of others?

The Staniland question:
Do you believe that male-sexed people have the right to undress and shower in a communal changing room with teenage girls?
is so clever. The fact that so many people refuse to engage with it - let alone answer it - means it's a quick, powerful, way of showing how ridiculous the TWAW position is.

Can we think of any others that would be as effective? Maybe we could come up with 5 or so really sharp questions that TRAs could refuse to answer. My first thoughts are something along the lines of:
Why is it racist to identify as another race but stunning and brave to identify as another sex?
I'm sure somebody can word that better.

So any suggestions? The questions need to be short and clear.

Okay next question, is the risk to women from a 10 year old trans girl using women's spaces greater than the risk to a 10 year old trans girl were she expected to use men's spaces?

Yes. Because a transgirl is a boy and is at a comparable level of risk to a ten year old boy.

Floisme · 17/02/2021 16:21

I like this game.
Just a reminder of how jj views this thread.

titchy · 17/02/2021 16:20

Sorry but are you arguing that somebody who everyone assumes is a little girl including potential sexual predators is safe in male spaces?

Now I'm confused. You're talking about a 10 year old yes? Presumably with long hair and a skirt? But with a penis? They'd be as safe as a 10 year old boy with short hair wearing jeans.

A 10 year old boy as that is what they are is capable of sexual violence in a way that a biological girl is not.

jj1968 · 17/02/2021 16:16

Yes of course. The child is male, will look like a boy at that age (girls and boys look the same pre-puberty), has a penis and will a urinal.

ArabellaScott · 17/02/2021 16:14

I've asked 'do you think women should ever be entitled to single sex spaces'? before.

Said person ended up having to say 'no' as they'd painted themselves into a corner, but u could see the dissonance crumbling even as he did so. He's never brought up the subject of the GRA or gender since, and he used to bang on about it.

334bu · 17/02/2021 16:11

Do you think that males who are just as likely to be sexual predators as any other males should be allowed to share sleeping accommodation with teenage girls, just because they say they are women?

PotholeParadies · 17/02/2021 16:06

@MaryBCH 's question

Do you agree that there should be sex-segregated facilities for women in hospitals, schools, refuges and prisons?

titchy · 17/02/2021 15:59

If my dh identifies as a woman, that would apparently make me a lesbian. Can I then get myself on a diversity shortlist or become an LGBTQ+ rep?

(With Thanks for the trans widows whose situations I have just appropriated.)

WWJackieWeaverD · 17/02/2021 15:56

When speaking to someone I know (and who knows I have had a pregnancy and a baby), I find that:

"Can I be a transwoman?"

works quite well as a jumping off point.

Particularly effective as, at face value, it only requires them to lay down the law as to how a female person may or may not define herself. And somehow no-one ever seems to have any qualms about doing that.

Panicmode1 · 17/02/2021 15:50

If it is acceptable for Eddie Izzard to put on girl mode and boy mode, why is it unacceptable for people to put on black mode and white mode?

HeadIsFucked · 17/02/2021 15:42

Is it possible to identify as another race? might work better.

Doesnt work IME. 'Of course not' followed by 'but science' when you ask why. No science can be explained of course

aliasundercover · 17/02/2021 14:45

Part of the problem is that when people are asked these questions or challenged about the ideology, they duck it with "just be kind" wishy washy junk.

That was why I originally asked for a specific sort of question*, one where it required a yes or no answer or a refusal to answer. A question designed to force a TRA to say what they actually mean.

*No criticism of the other questions suggested, there have been some great examples.

What is a man?

the definition most people will give will be physical.

Can you be a man and a woman at the same time?

Most people will say no

and thus they will have proved by their own logic that men are not women.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/02/2021 14:36

Can you explain what you mean by hijacking?

I guess it's similar to when Adrian Harrop said Posie Parker was "appropriating the definition of woman".

mindtheclegs · 17/02/2021 14:31

"I like this game."

Very telling that some think that women's rights are just "a game".

JJ what sort of game were you thinking of?

Part of the problem is that when people are asked these questions or challenged about the ideology, they duck it with "just be kind" wishy washy junk. And of course it's because of the cognitive dissonance they would encounter. Their #nodebate makes them look dishonest and desperate.

wellthatsunusual · 17/02/2021 14:20

@jj1968

Plus, should women ever be allowed to discuss things without the presence of a male?

Should gender critical women ignore the spaces where they can do just that in favour of hijacking the world's largest parenting forum and creating a hostile environment for many parents?

Can you explain what you mean by hijacking?

Are women meant to ask your permission for what we may discuss?

mindtheclegs · 17/02/2021 14:16
@mindtheclegs I agree my wording on that question was a clunky, I just struggled to phrase to make it clear what was meant.
My criticism was a bit clunky too, sorry!

Violetparis · 17/02/2021 13:55

Do you believe that there are two biological sexes, male and female ? Does believing that there are two biological sexes, female and male, make you transphobic ? I would like politicians to answer these questions.

rabbitwoman · 17/02/2021 13:51

My mind always leaps to 'can you tell me what the difference is between a trans woman and a woman?'...

Because of course there are massive differences that this whole argument hinges on but also to acknowledge those differences is..... hard for thrm to do....

I also found posting the photo of Laurel Hubbard on the podium winning gold, with the silver and bronze medalists turning their back, simply asking 'do you think this is fair?' tends to be hard to answer....

oldwomanwhoruns · 17/02/2021 13:49

So many good ones here. How about:

Is it fair that a man can compete in women's competitive sports in the UK?

... then if the answer is no,

If he now grows his hair and puts on pink shorts, is it now fair that a man can compete in women's competitive sports here in the UK?

Smile
Dalyesque · 17/02/2021 13:46

What are the similarities between transwomen and women?
