Fucking clueless tosspot. These men make me so angry!

Glad to see him being taken to task in the replies.

I particularly like this one:

"Sometimes, when you've put your foot in it up to your bollocks, it's better to walk away than pretend you found the experience funny."

It's the BBC article that has a link to another report entitled "Nazi salutes, laddish societies and safe spaces"

I wonder if that's why Omid picked up the Nazi label, especially if he was skim-reading: I wonder if the linked report was deliberately placed.

@donquixotedelamancha I agree, I expect that he hadn't even read the article fully, and certainly did not mean to make the association, but to start calling people Adolf is pretty low.

And perhaps another indication of how people don't read anything properly and also have a vague understanding of a topic without really thinking it through fully.

Which is probably the case in all sorts of topics. I don't know much about climate change, as it's not a topic which particularly interests me, although I am sure I should be more engaged with it. However, if I make a comment such as 'I don't think it's a good idea for the UK to ban new petrol car sales after 2030, we should allow them to be sold for longer' then I will probably get polite disagreement and credible information sources to educate myself further.

But if I say 'I don't think the laws should change to allow Self-ID of gender' then at best I get called a transphobe and bigot, and at worst I am fearful of losing my employment.

Sorry, off on a tangent there.

No, do anything but shut our traps! What a stupid thing to say.

Rise above and beat the stereotype, don't become one

It's also this very militant and aggressive approach you take to everything. You know your audience here and know everyone will rally to anything that could in any way be perceived as anti feminist.

The article referenced attempts to silence a woman because of her feminist views.

You are simply being corrected. It might feel that you are being attacked because you have been corrected multiple times, but given the nature of your error, the number of corrections is proportionate.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 17/02/2021 10:33

I suspect he skim read the Selina Todd paragraph as [blah blah women stuff]
Hence his surprise when it all kicked off

If you assumed the free speech debate was in the same place as a decade ago, you'd think it was about Nick Griffin and milkshakes and stuff and wonder what all the fuss was about

Prepare for the unholy backlash for saying he wasn't being misogynistic and that a comedian (god forbid) was telling a joke

donquixotedelamancha · 17/02/2021 10:27

The ONLY person mentioned in the article as someone who could benefit from these new provisions i.e. would be allowed to speak freely was not a neo-Nazi, not Donald Trump, not a member of QAnon. It was an academic who is a gender critical feminist. So yes, it isn't a huge leap to say that Omid was referring to her as a Nazi.

Indeed and one of the first people to point out this discrepancy was called Adolf OD. In fairness, I think that was supposed to be a joke (normally one would be able to tell because there would be some element of humour to the comment but as it's OD, I have no clue).

I don't think he meant to have a go at feminists, I don't think he read the article and just got defensive when loads of people started disagreeing with him. His recent post thanking someone for context which was in the original article suggest he still hasn't read it.

NewParent11 · 17/02/2021 10:22

Think you've said it perfectly. Both parties reluctant to see the other side through stubbornness. To be honest I don't have any issues with what has been said more the ignorance to being able look beyond a single agenda. It clearly wasn't a slight on feminism but any excuse to kick off

BuntingEllacott · 17/02/2021 10:22

Alexa, what is sea lioning?

Seriously, I don't tend to favour jargon buzzwords, but NewParent, it's been explained to you a number of times that the no platforming response has affected feminists directly and this was part of the story Djalili shared and dismissed as 'just nazis'.

If you persist on scolding those who have pointed this out to you, I can assure you readers will draw their own conclusions about both your reading comprehension and your good intent.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/02/2021 10:21

I am pretty sure that the Selina Todd bit was there from the outset. I read it yesterday morning and it was in there. However, I couldn't say for sure exactly when it was.

Yeah, it was there when I read it yesterday too.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/02/2021 10:21

I don't think you've read the original tweet or understood context

LMAO at this comment from someone who clearly didn't read the article OD was referring to.

Horizons83 · 17/02/2021 10:20

@NewParent11 You have had this explained several times and don't seem to be getting it. Omid tweeted an article, commenting that there were more important things to be worrying about than whether universities should let Nazi's speak.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 17/02/2021 10:18

@newparent11 No one has said anything particularly harsh. Nothing unreasonable has been articulated. What you are feeling is just cognitive dissonance. It is not nice to have people disagree with you. It is also hard if you are being influenced by something you either can't or won't see and it is pointed out. Open yourself up to the fact that you might be wrong or unable to see something unfolding that someone else can.

AdHominemNonSequitur · 17/02/2021 10:09

There is really only 2 subjects you can't speak freely about. Anything that contradicts Critical race theory/colonial interpretations of power and oppression and anything that criticises Queer Theory/trans ideology based interpretations of power and oppression.

I read it for the first time in the evening, after Derxa started the thread, so I can't contradict you.

But if it has been edited, there should be a note down the bottom to say it was edited, and there isn't.

Biscuitsanddoombar · 17/02/2021 09:55

In more positive news someone has realised there is more nuance to the free speech bunfight

Otto English who is woke on pretty much everything deleted his tweet on only right wing bigots support the attack on universities after lots of women replied to it pointing how universities were silencing women and denying biology saying he hadn’t realised all the issues

twitter.com/otto_english/status/1361776645061902338?s=21

Rare example of twitter causing someone to think more rather than double down

Aha85 · 17/02/2021 09:51

IIRC the BBC news article didn't have the Selina Todd bit in when I first read it yesterday morning - that was added later. I may be misremembering though.

PotholeParadies · 17/02/2021 09:45

*stupid thumbs!

I'll continue.

If someone's response to reading a post by a woman on a message board is to assume all women have exactly the same thought, the problem isn't what the woman posted.

If you read a French man's opinion on the EU, would you assume all French men thought the same way? Or would that be bloody stupid and xenophobic?

Women are 50% of the world's population. If you "write women off" every time one of us says something you don't like, that is your gynephobia at work.
